I'm too lazy to look up the exact dates, but we just started an international break!

I watched a good portion of Argentina-Chile last night, and boy did the match deliver the goods. Argentina won 2-1 away at Calama, a small desert town at 7,400 feet above sea level. Chile was trying to gain an advantage by 1) having Argentina travel much farther and less conveniently than to Santiago, 2) play at altitude, and 3) preparing for their next match @Bolivia. Emi Martinez also posted that the team was held up at the airport, and that the team hotel was cut off from water, with fire alarms going off throughout the night. Classic CONMEBOL shithousery, but I have to think the old method of just sending an army of prostitutes would've worked better. It didn't matter though. Angel Di Maria got the scoring started with a pearl of a curler low and to the far post. Chile then equalized with a beautiful diagonal ball to Ben Brereton who had a lot of work to do, but managed to generate a ton of power on a header and loop one over Emi Martinez. He's clearly taken the mantle as the best Chilean player. Not long after, Papu Gomez did well to shake off a couple of stiff challenges in the middle, get a pass off to De Paul, who did very well to take some space and launch a goddamn cannon shot that Bravo could only deflect, that Lautaro was able to pounce on the rebound and reach the final scoreline. Bravo came off injured after that, and I really think the force of the shot caused it. Messi wasn't called for these WCQ, and many players and coaches (including coach Scaloni) were ruled out due to COVID. Gutsy win for the albiceleste. Argentina will be without Otamendi, Paredes, and perhaps others due to yellow card accumulation for their next match against Colombia.

In other CONMEBOL results, Ecuador drew 1-1 against Brazil with a red card for each team. The Brazil red card for Emerson was charmin soft, but such is life in int'l football. And Uruguay beat Paraguay away to surge into 4th (with an extra match played over most other sides). The table is still very congested, with only Venezuela and Paraguay the only ones without a real shot to reach 5th. Teams 5-8 are all within 2 points of each other. Tonight, Colombia hosts Peru, 5th and 6th in the table currently and even on points (Colombia ahead on GD), and Venezuela hosts Bolivia.

astride the divide
Both of those red cards in Ecuador/Brazil came in the first 20 minutes. Then Alisson twice got a second yellow, only to have his dismissal reversed by VAR each time. Each half ended up with 10 minutes of extra time. Crazy game.

Huge matches again tonight in CONMEBOL (home team listed first):

Bolivia-Chile
Uruguay-Venezuela
Argentina-Colombia

Brazil-Paraguay
Peru-Ecuador

I think most eyes are trained on the nations fighting for 4th place (auto qualify for WC) and 5th place (playoff against Oceania Confederation). Peru currently sit 4th on 20 points, Uruguay sit 5th with 19, Colombia 6th on 17, and Chile 7th on 16.

Peru and Uruguay are rooting for Argentina tonight in a BIG way, as Colombia is a real threat and Colombia's remaining matches after this are home against Bolivia, and @Venezuela--by far the easiest 2 final fixtures.

Argentina will be without Tagliafico, Otamendi, De Paul and Paredes due to suspension. Hopefully we see Romero-Lopez in the back, although it's rumored old man Pezzella will team up with Lopez. Tagliafico has been brilliant for Argentina in the past, but Scaloni's system has made Molina, Montiel, and Acuna all serviceable. The middle may be a problem, but GLC should start alongside Guido Rodriguez and Luis Ocampos. Acuna will certainly push forward and join the MF and attack frequently. Although that's a fairly suspect MF for defense. Up front, it's expected that Lautaro and ADM will continue in the XI, and either Dybala or Nico Gonzalez filling out the frontline.

Peru will want to at least get a point off mighty Ecuador (no snark) as they visit Uruguay before hosting Paraguay in the final matchday.

Uruguay need to get 3 points tonight, as they have a showdown with Peru in MD17, before finishing @Chile. That Chile match may be relatively easier or harder, depending on whether Chile can remain in the hunt.

I've been catching up on the whole story of Ben Brereton Diaz and pretty much every aspect is fantastic. He went from flopped young Championship striker from Stoke to Chilean folk hero in the blink of an eye. I look forward to seeing him in the PL next year, whether with Blackburn or another club.

CONMEBOL results from last night (home team listed first):

Bolivia-Chile, 2-3
Uruguay-Venezuela, 4-1
Argentina-Colombia, 1-0
Brazil-Paraguay, 4-0
Peru-Ecuador, 1-1

So with 2 matches to go, here's the important part of the table:

Brazil - 39
Argentina - 35
Ecuador - 25
Uruguay - 22
Peru - 21
Chile - 19
Colombia - 17

Bolivia, Paraguay, and Venezuela are all mathematically eliminated (I think). Worth mentioning that both Brazil and Argentina are undefeated, just batshit crazy good right now. That table also doesn't show the fact that their previous mockery cancellation means they've played one less than the rest.

Anyhow, Argentina may have just knocked out Colombia last night, with Uruguay smashing Venezuela, Peru drawing with Ecuador, and Chile staying alive with a 3-2 thrilling victory over Bolivia. Remaining matches for teams 4-7:

Uruguay - Peru, @Chile
Peru - @Uruguay, Paraguay
Chile - @Brazil, Uruguay
Colombia - Bolivia, @Venezuela

Uruguay controls their destiny as the only team playing 2 matches against their direct competition. Colombia are trailing significantly, but finish against 2 teams that they should earn 6 points against. Peru is sitting pretty nice with a winnable game against Paraguay but a showdown with Uruguay next MD. Chile have the most work to do with a tough matchup against Brazil, and a showdown with Uruguay.

I think Uruguay and Peru make it in since Chile will most likely lose to Brazil and they max out at 22 points. Colombia might make it to 23 points with 2 wins to close out the campaign, but 2 points from 2 matches gets Uruguay to 24 and Peru beating Paraguay gets them to 24.

Argentina-Colombia was a fairly fun match last night that highlighted Angel Di Maria and Lautaro once again. Di Maria was a menace down the right and almost scored a curler early on. He also had a great FK saved, and was generally dangerous throughout. Lautaro continues his scoring binge, getting on the end of an Acuna cross that backup CB Tesillo BADLY misplayed. Argentina have become very good at pressing and congesting the middle, and Colombia didn't create much. Emi Martinez had 1-2 big saves and Pezzella saved one off the line.

Goal of of the year from 39 year old Atiba Hutchinson? Who says no?

Incredible control … off the post, off the defender, off the leg , off the head to lob the keeper from two feet

Edit: there appears to be a very slight element of good fortune here. Doesn’t diminish the achievement in my opinion.
