The Greg Hill and Danielle Murr show on 'EEI

Caught a tiny bit this morning. Talking about giving 81 to Hendricks after A-Herb's demise and Edelman's worth following the Michael Thomas contract. Kind of a more sporty and slightly less boring Matty in the Morning show. Not a fan, yet. Although very excited to turn on the station at that time and not hear Gerry and Kirk. And liked that they took a lot of calls for a morning show.

What do others think so far?

They were responsible for one of the worst in-inning interviews I have ever heard with Sean McDonough during the radio broadcast Friday night. McDonough is probably more culpable because he ultimately was the one completely ignoring the action on the field and then invited them back for another half inning. I might have been less annoyed had they actually been funny.

Boring. Very Boring. EEI is trying though. Hill is a sexist pig so I hope he fails miserably. Treni probably should have gotten the spot or even Wiggy. Had Charlie Baker on the other day so the effort is there. Either way its certainly better than the KKK rally we had to endure from 6-10 every morning.

I haven't listened much so far but man what I've listened to is B-O-R-I-N-G, just as you said. Holy smokes.

Greg Hill isn't the most exciting host and is most definitely not a big sports fan, so this move was curious from the start.

I think Boston could absolutely support two sports talk stations, but good lord is WEEI a dumpster fire. I can't believe more changes aren't forthcoming.

I'll agree that he's not the most exciting host, but I disagree that he's not a big sports fan. It's been a few years since I listened to him regularly, but I remember him being a sports fan (certainly a fan of the local teams), just not necessarily the most knowledgeable one. He's essentially a typical sports talk radio caller...they watch the games, they follow the teams, but most of the nuances of the games escape them. I don't think he's any better or worse than someone like Lou Merloni talking about the NBA or NFL, or Christian Fauria talking MLB or NHL.

Perhaps you're right, but I've been listening to them on WAAF on and off (mostly off) for a few months between T&R commercials and the rest of that show would tease him for going to some game and doing the Dodger Fan move of showing up in the 3rd and leaving in the 7th and not really following anything. The few seconds I had them on this morning, Greg asked a pretty basic baseball question about last night's game and the third guy in the booth (no idea what his name is) was ribbing him about it - saying "but you never watch games" or something similar.

I don't hate the guy - I found some of the WAAF show mildly entertaining (mostly due to Daniele and Hsu) - I just wonder how this is going to go. Toucher and Rich were absolutely not sports guys, but clearly they adapted quite well. Maybe Hillman can too.

I've caught 15 minutes here and there the last few days and was shocked at how dull it was. I've never heard Greg Hill before and can not believe he is a lead guy for a morning drive show. He sounds miserable. I'm not even sure what the show is supposed to be, they seem all over the place.

I've made an effort to listen a few times since it started, man is it boring. They had Wyc on which was pretty good, but their main content is boring. The entire tone of the show sounds boring.

I admit that I listened to Hill on ‘AAF for 20+ years, and I mostly enjoyed it, so I may be biased. I have only listened to ~30 mins on ‘EEI so far, so I can’t give it a fair review. However, I do think you might need to give them more than a couple of days to get some decent content ironed out.

Greg Hill might be the worst radio host to be as successful as he is, but his success is ALL because of his supporting cast. Danielle has a personality, but she isn't enough. Without Hsu or LB (who I still can't believe wasn't brought in given his background), there isn't the instant comic relief option. Hill is a rich guy from the suburbs who isn't THAT into sports.

This show was doomed from the start.

Edit: The boring-ass title doesn't help. How hard was it to call it the Hill-Murr Morning Show?

I'm sure there's a fair amount of "wait, what are we supposed to talk about now?" going on in the show. It took Toucher and Rich a few months to figure out their stride too.

It caused me to throw in the towel and order SirusXM. Meanwhile, PBS will have to do.

The Sports Hub is playing down to the level of the competition. Ceaseless laughing at their own not-funny-at-all jokes.

What a wasteland.

So you were a fan of K&C and the following iterations and them canceling it made you switch to PBS and Sirius?

Toucher and Rich are not The Sports Hub playing down to competition it’s just a different radio format, which WEEI is trying to spin off of. . Felger and Mazz and the Jones show are awful though.

NO, I was not a fan of K&C. I used to be a fan of T&R but have gotten tired of the sycophantic giggling. I think they've gotten lazier as the competition has melted away.

The pacing seemed better this morning at least from 6am-7:30am. I'm trying to give it a chance but Nick Stevens is horrid. They can't get rid of him soon enough. Wiggy will be on tomorrow and I'm hoping he draws more out of Ken and Chris.

Not a fan of Danielle either. Trenni would be better but that isn't happening.

Hillman is ok but I have a feeling he wants his own sycophants around him and I don't see it surviving long term.

Nick used to be one half of the afternoon drive show on WAAF. His partner is hosting his own show on The History Channel.

Seems pretty easy to determine who has the bragging rights there.

I think it’s time for WEEI to swap out whoever picks the groceries.

I tried the Hill/Murr show a couple times and couldn’t last 30 seconds [insert prom night joke]

I used to listen to about 30 minutes of Hill’s show on AAF every day on my ride into work and at my desk. I listened to 5 minutes on Monday and switched to music. I haven’t been back. Show is disjointed and boring.

I used to listen to Hill on WAAF occasionally when I was younger, so I decided to give him a shot on this new show. It's almost incredible how terrible and boring it is. I haven't lasted more than a few minutes on any attempt. Today I tuned into a fascinating discussion about how Greg Hill is totally against the new Home Alone reboot. I can't imagine anyone will listen to this, my guess is that this show will have a very short life.

There's a lot of reasons why I will never have my own show on the radio. But I think that the biggest thing is that I don't get too wound up over really trivial shit like this. There's going to be a new Home Alone? Who cares. Like is this movie so sacred that there's no way that it can be remade? If you really don't like the idea, don't see the movie. It's an incredibly easy solution.

But to be a radio personality, you have to get frothy about shit like this. "Tom Brady sold his house? WHAT THE FUCK??? This is a slap in the face to Mr. Kraft and everything this organization stands for!" I wonder if you can shut this stuff off? If not, I bet it does a number on your personal life.

It really is about how talented the person talking about the trivial stuff is, I would say. A good comic could do 5-10 outstanding minutes on the Home Alone reboot. Tone is all important. Most of this kind of stuff should be played for humor, not anger. That's why I dig T&R. They're not perfect, but chances are that if they did 10 minutes on Brady selling his house it'd end up turning silly and be played for laughs ("what is he going to look for in a house?" type stuff). Unfortunately most radio hosts are hacks and they only know how to do outrage. It's all so exhausting.

You're right. Unfortunately, there isn't a good comic doing these things on any air waves. T&R are probably the best, but the last few years, Fred has gone away from making things entertaining or funny and just bitches for minutes on end. Truly funny people aren't going into radio any more and certainly not sports radio in Boston at 6:00 am on a fading second-rate station.

IDK. At some point, the people running EEI have to say fuck it and hire a bunch of young, hungry people (and not just white guys) and let them have a go at it. if it tanks, who cares; the station is going down in flames right now with retreads. Listen to some local popular podcasts, see which ones are funny, pay them a little bit and throw them on the radio. Podcasting is like an untapped, unpaid minor league system. It sure beats listening to Glenn Ordway or Greg Hill or Dale Arnold make the same point that they've been making since the first Gulf War was going on.

I agree 100%. Most music-centric radio employs some kind of 'wacky morning zoo' type morning show. Which isn't my cup of tea, but they at least tend to be light-hearted and fun. Meanwhile, most sports radio employs some kind of 'angry cynical screaming pissed-off white guy' type morning show. That has worked, for some stations in some markets, but it's clearly failing at WEEI. Usually desperate times call for desperate measures. But not with this station apparently.

It's insane to me that, at a minimum, every single hour of weekend programming isn't a younger/newer person.

Absolutely blows my mind that on any given weekend they still throw out Craig Mustard, Larry Johnson, Steve Buckley, Jermaine Wiggins, Marc effing James...

What is this doing for anybody?

I'd rather they just throw different random people every weekend. If they're terrible, at least that was interesting. If they happen to be OK, bring them back for a second shot down the road. It can not be worse than what they're doing now.

I expect the demographics of terrestrial sports radio skews older than the typical SoSHer, so middle aged white men are likely the most desirable host bucket at this time.
Yeah but it's not working any more. And that's the wrong way to look at it. You want to bring in new listeners, right? Go younger, promote it. There are plenty of people in this town who are sports crazy, and most are younger. When Felger and Mazz started, they talked about soccer and hockey -- two things EEI wouldn't touch. Guess what, it brought in younger listeners. You can do the same with EEI. Hell, if they want to have geriatrics to sell boner pills to, do one show a day where the guys in the studio are under 40-years-old.

They have to do something.

I hope you're right and they take the chance and go down that route.

So far local sports radio has added Arcand and . . . . .? And put him with Awful Adam Jones. Is there another good young sports radio guy in a smaller New England market who is also ready for a callup?

There's no one on the Big Jab. It's worse than WEEI.

Of course it is.

I'd bet my house that if WEEI went out to find young people to jump on the radio on the weekends, they'd get thousands of applications even if they paid minimum wage.

Listening to both sports radio stations there is a pretty consistent ad message:

- weight loss
- hair loss procedures
- ED

then you had the legal firm advertising specifically for guys who's wives are divorcing them. That's kind of a hint as to their main demographic.

It's interesting, you don't hear the ED ads on 98.5. Every now and then I'll be in the car with my wife and one of the ED ads will come on 'eei, which gets awkward, since you have to actually have sex to suffer from ED.

You were expecting a sports show?
No shit. I don't think they moved Hill over from WAAF for his sports takes. I haven't listened but from the tone of the thread here, seems like he's still finding his way on a new station. It shouldn't come as a surprise at all that he's falling back to what worked on his old show.

Didn't the show he replaced used to defend their decidedly non-sports related political talk by saying they were "guy talk" radio?

The Bay Area sports stations have started doing this. Two late 20s Warriors fans with a podcast and very active Twitter accounts have started getting occasional 2-3 hour blocks on the weekends (I expect they'll get a regular slot once the NBA returns). Their shows aren't bad, and they are MUCH better than the same old weekend retreads. And I think there are at least 1-2 other weekend shows with younger hosts out here. Also, NBC Bay Area's post-post-game shows for the Giants and Warriors are very low-budget shows with (relatively) young hosts just shooting the shit for 30 mins. They are actually pretty watchable. Grant Brisbee was one of the co-hosts of the Giants show last season, which was fun.

This is what other industries have been doing in order to find new talent: how big is your Twitter following? Do you have a lot of followers on Instagram? How about a YouTube channel or podcast, what do those numbers say? If they're high enough, the idea is that a bunch of the audience will migrate with them to the new format: radio or some other development deal. Oh yeah, they can also pay these people far less than what Glen Ordway is demanding, or at the very least do what is being done in the Bay Area: have them on during the weekends.

It's so dumb to me that the producers of EEI don't realize this.

The question that comes to mind, and I don't mean this as a defense of EEI as it's an honest question, is are there viable podcast/Youtube/social media prospects in the Boston market that they could be tapping into? It's not content I'm particularly hungry for so I'm not actively seeking it out, so I don't know what exists out there.

Maybe I'm over-estimating the reach of this forum, but I feel like if there were a podcast that was locally focused on any or all of the teams, and it were of some quality and/or popularity, it would be something that would bubble up on SoSH's radar. If it's not on our radar here, is it likely to rise high enough to hit a commercial radio station's radar and inspire them to take a chance?

That's a really good question and it's one that I don't have an answer for. But I think that finding the newest sports radio personality is a lot like finding the next big comedian, there's a lot of shit that you need to wade through in order to find the next Dave Chappelle or whomever, but I think that's part of the job as a program director. If you care about the station and where its' going to be in the next 10 years, it's not just throwing your buddies on the radio and calling it a day.

One of the toughest things to do is establish chemistry, it can take weeks or months before a duo syncs up. Getting people who have already got those bruises out of the way is another benefit, I think.

That's a fair point to bring up. I have no idea about whether this is true or not. But like nattysez wrote, they already do this in the Bay Area. I would be shocked if there wasn't at least a few dozen independent Boston based sports podcasts right now. I have no inclination to find them though.

I have no doubt in my mind that there are independent podcasts out there with a Boston-based sports focus. My worry is that the quality of those shows/hosts isn't what we here desire. My fear is that if there's a podcast out there getting enough hits or downloads that Entercom thinks giving them entry into the radio world via a weekend slot would be mutually beneficial, and we here haven't heard of it yet, it's just going to be more of the same mindless hot takez we loathe. Basically, I'm picturing something along the lines of the Turtleboy equivalent of a sports podcast.

Again, I agree. But it's the job of the Program Manager to separate a shitty podcast from some diamonds in the rough, who with some mentoring, might be the next Toucher and Rich or Felger and Mazz or Big Show or whatever. IDK, I rarely listen to sports radio any more so really this isn't a big deal to me, but I would think that anything is better than Mustard and Johnson.

Also, I'm not sure where EEI or TSH can find young people who want to break into sports radio. It seems like a dying medium to me where you need to pay your dues to get people to listen to you. Now you can get a few mics and some software and get your thoughts out to a bunch of people.

Would they be better off just paying some good podcasts some cash and airing those on the weekends and see what sticks? Seems like an easy way to do it.

In the initial phases of such a transition, the program manager would have to deal with the backlash from the small but vocal angrymob who are not only loyal to the tired warhorses, but are the group most likely to bombard the station with complaints. Then Mr. Burns comes to the PM and says, "why are we getting these angry letters? Make them stop." And then you're back to the Mustard-thon. Nobody listens; but nobody complains.

I never really thought of that. Imagine if your life turned out in a way that you took the time to write to anyone about the disappearance of Mustard and Johnson from your airwaves? How can you fight back against something like that?

I would have written sooner, but I had to figure out how to make my radio do "FM."
