I think Randolph is actually hugely underestimating his popularity and legacy here. Growing up in the suburbs, yeah Jackson and maybe Munson were the real stars, but Willie Randolph was adored as well. Probably equal to Munson and Guidry and definitely more so than Chambliss and Nettles.

Willie was the quiet star of that raucous team. Young, talented, could run, field and hit. He came over in a lopsided deal for Doc Medich. I believe Gabe Paul made that deal. He built those Yankee teams on trades and free agents. Nettles, Chambliss, Dent, Randolph, Piniella, Rivers, Hunter, and Lyle. And Reggie, of course. Munson was the only homegrown position player. Randolph always seemed homegrown because he was so young.
