You can't win by turning the ball over four (FOUR!) times scoring just 10 points.

The defense heroically held back the vaunted Chiefs offense but the mistakes just piled up. We got a farm-full of goats for this one:
  • Edelman: terrible case of the dropsies
  • Hoyer & Stidham: expectedly mediocre
  • Penalties: dumb killer flags, especially in the 4th quarter
It's tough to lose Cam & play this game under crazy circumstances but a loss is loss.

Next up, Denver at home.

There’s really no reason to look beyond Edelman and Hoyer. Jules is playing like his head isn’t in the game and Hoyer played like he doesn’t have a head

I’m legitimately just hoping the NFL’s bullshit protocol doesn’t result in spread.

Anyways, this was a really nice effort by the Pats. I would’ve been shocked if they won this game, all things considered.

Absolutely a loss they can build on, they have to know they can hang with the best in the league after this and they battled to the end.

The referees.

Make no mistake, Hoyer had the worst game I’ve seen from a Pats QB since Jeff Carlson. The two red zone trips that produced nothing because his brain shut down should never happen for an NFL QB. With competent QB play the Pats win this game running away.

Never expected the game to be winnable so it's weird being pissed off after it like this.

Just Hoyer.

I give a pass to Edelman for a stinker and for a bit of a subpar year so far and will withhold judgment. He's a 34 year old slot receiver that has taken a pounding and has had to spend too long as the team's number 1. It's just not sustainable and they need to find a way to try to make him a complimentary piece of the receiving corps, not a water carrier.

Stidham looked like a rookie, but he is one, so can’t fault him TOO much. Hoyer should know better and if he can’t compete mentally he needs to just retire and become a coach or whatever.

Refs were terrible but the Pats have overcome plenty of crap ref performances.

Edelman is definitely giving off vibes of being cooked. Or he just didn’t care about winning this game which is even worse.

Hoyer. would have liked to see how the Chiefs played if we tied it or got ahead.

anyone else is a fools' errand to blame.

Counterpoint: he’s looking close to being done. When Welker started dropping everything it was a sign he was done as an effective player because his body was too beat up. Same thing is happening to Edelman. That gift INT was an easy pass and he simply blew it. He shouldn’t get a pass at all.

Hoyer. Literally his only job is to avoid making mental mistakes and he made two inexcusable ones. Also he looked generally terrible throwing the ball. Game would have been competitive with just average NFL QB play.

This was my take away. He's had a bunch of these this season, but a ton tonight. I love Jules, but he's cooked if his hands are gone.

Really impressed by the young players tonight. Without Cam it would have been glorious. It is so weird to watch shitty QB play for the Pats. I hope I never get used to this.

Defense played well, but DMC's drop of the INT was an awful blunder, particularly at that stage of the game.

Hoyer wad dead set on being the hero and not settling for 3 points.

COVID-19 and the officials.

Officials.

I think Edelman is hurt.
NFL officiating is just poor.

HM to McCourty but defense overall was very good. Good execution and good game plan.

I think it's very possible. I really meant I was withholding judgment not that I thought he would be fine. 34 is 34.

But he also has gone from a very stable situation to getting adjusted to a new QB and now he has to get adjusted again. Cooked receivers don't go 8 for 170 or whatever he did against the Seahawks and so there's obviously still some gas in the tank. When he is done he likely will be done quickly. And maybe that point is now, but I'm not ready to call 2020 a loss for Edelman yet.

I want to add, this was a hell of an effort for a team that had to fly out to KC today in uncertain conditions. Ridiculous they had to play today, but they gave Mahomes fits on defense and were in it all game. Hoyer just sabotaged the effort with his idiotic mistakes.

Bill for starting Hoyer.
Bill for not pulling Hoyer sooner at the half after he took the dumb sack
Hoyer
Jules
(I would rather let Stidham make physical mistakes and get reps then let Hoyer make inexcusable mental mistakes that a guy with his experience should not be making. You can fix Stids mistakes with experience. You can’t fix stupid.)

Corrente really called it forward progress and in the grasp per pool report.

holy shit... what an atrocious call. Mahomes sack rate is going to go through the roof if that is the standard.

fake edit - we will ignore that corrente picked one of the few unchallengeable calls to bail them out of stopping the play when it shouldn't have been.

Now that I've calmed down a bit...

This really was quite an effort by the team overall, especially the D.

I'd have believed if 26-10 was the score at the half and not 6-3.

Hoyer / Edelman / Refs

Hoyer was simply awful - can’t take points off the board like that in any game, let alone KC

Reads threads backwards
Tantalizing.

The D played great but dropped 2 picks.

The O played well but the QBs (and Edelman) made big mistakes.

The refs made a mess.

That the game was winnable was the icing.

Edelman was bad but he’s on pace for like 75 receptions for 1200 yards playing with a brand new qb for the first time. I think saying he’s washed is pretty premature

I didn't see the game, but heard a little on the radio. Got home from work and looked at the box score.

First downs
NE: 21
KC: 19

Rush yards
NE: 185
KC: 94

Pass yards
NE: 172
KC: 229

Total yards
NE: 357
KC: 323

Turnovers:
NE: 4
KC: 1

Read a little of what happened...will watch it tomorrow or Wednesday. What I'm encouraged by (in terms of what I've learned about tonight's game) is that the defense did a hell of a job on KC....flying out today, no rest, bizarre situation, knowing they had to totally sack up because Hoyer was almost guaranteed to lead NE to very few points... and they held KC to 19 first downs and 323 total yards. KC had been averaging 433 yards and 27 first downs per game. Great work by the defense.

Now as for the offense...I'm encouraged by the running game. Saw Stidham's nice TD throw on the highlights.

Hoyer though. Holy smokes. Brian Hoyer should never ever ever ever ever suit up for the New England Patriots, or any other team, ever again. He is done. Not that he was ever very good to begin with, but this absolutely was a winnable game, against everything that makes sense in this world. And god he just botched it big-time.

So I'm encouraged by the defense, which for the second straight regular season matchup really held KC in check, and by the running game, which KC knew NE would need, and NE still gashed them. That gives me hope if they match up in the playoffs.

But this is the goat thread, so.... Hoyer.

Thought the D played nearly as perfect a game as you can against this team. Dropped picks but literally no other complaints. Really impressive effort.

Run game still looked solid even without much of a passing threat to worry about plus OL replacements. Liked Harris and hope to see if they can work him into the passing game for some different looks.

Byrd is solid and Harry is still making some plays. This unit is very clearly lacking a #1 and are painfully weak at tight end.

A couple of us opined after the Seahawks game that it might be better to talk of 3Up/3Down or something a bit more nuanced than Goats. To that end, I thought that Rivers and Calhoun and Guy were all monsters tonight. Ditto Onwenu for playing yet another new position on th OLine very successfully. Herron and Ferentz also played pretty well. OTOH, Wynn seemed to have quite a bit of trouble in pass pro tonight.
Finally, Harris seemed to have given evidence to all those hoping he would be a viable replacement for Michel.

Who ever decided to start Hoyer in the first place. I know Stidham didn't look much better but starting the second half against the SB Champs might make a kid nervous. YMMV.

That this team ran so well behind a line that included two rookies, and didn’t include Shaq Mason, is worth celebrating, even here in the GOAT thread. That’s my big up.

Hoyer. Those three quarters were a sobering reminder of the pre-Bledsoe/Brady days.
Nothing makes a fan base less interested than shuffling in and out crappy QBs. We've been spoiled for a very long time. Hoyer is who he is ...which isn't much. Stidham may be just another mid-draft QB pick who ends up jumping from team to team before calling it a career. At least he has some energy back there. So, there is that.

Hoyer alone.

Stidham had the one bad through, when pushing for a comeback.... Hoyer burned 2 great scoring opportunities due to sheer stupidity

I didn’t get to watch too much of the game, but I assume KC was loading up against the run, which makes the OL and RBs’ feats more impressive.
