Ummm, everyone except Bailey?

The most concerning part is the number of mistakes on both sides of the football. The talent gap is one thing but things like the encroachment penalty on the 4th down are deeply frustrating.

The next 3 weeks are going to be rough.

You’re never as good as you look when you win, and you’re never as bad as you look when you lose. But Christ, they looked *bad* on offense and very inconsistent on defense.

I’ll go with BB and Jones I guess.

Bad across the board:

Coach for benching Bourne for no reason.

Mac looked shaky and was off target. OL was useless.

Don’t let the score fool you: Defense left too many plays on the field and were bailed out by bad Miami offense.

This was a game that the Pats would have won if the Pats could have played something close to clean football. However, they could not, and as a result they were all but done before the first half ended.

Neither the Patriots nor the Dolphins looked like a good team, Tua looks like an accident waiting to happen out there (although having elite receiving talent helps him tremendously). I will not be shocked if both of these teams end below .500.

The difference today was that the Pats offense spent a whole half unable to get out of its own way. Ended a strong initial drive with a turnover and at least a 6 point swing (the would have had a FG and Miami drive for one). Followed up a nice third and long conversion with an OL breakdown that led to a drive-killing "no chance" sack. Then got the ball deep in their end and another OL breakdown led to an untouched rusher getting a strip sack touchdown. So, Pats were a -13ish on turnovers and trailed 10-0, which tells the story of how bad Tua was and that the Pats D had held the team in it. Until 18 seconds left in the half, when a terrible coverage breakdown led to a Miami big play TD to close out the half.

Pats O ran one nice drive in the second half then back to their unable to move the ball ways.

Defense gave up a FG they didn;t need to give up because of a bad missed tackle by Bryant.

Pats finally started throwing deep balls when the game was basically gone, and Mac 1) overthrew Agholor and 2) hit Bourne for a 41 yard gain. But then Mac threw an over the middle pass that set Agholor up to be mugged, leading to a fumble/turnover.

At the end of the day, this loss was all about the breakdowns, mostly on offense but also a couple of crucial ones on D. If the turnover battle is even instead of 0-3, the Pats win this one without much difficulty. But, alas, the turnovers count.

The three goats:

1. Bill Belichick. He tried some newfangled things on offense, both in terms of coaching (no coordinators, an OL coach who has to toggle between calling plays and coahcing the OL) and blocking schemes. And the team, and especially the OL, wasn't ready to execute. That buck has to stop at the head coach/head of the football operation.

2. The offensive line, esepcially pass blocking. Two free untouched to the QB drive killing sacks, one a strip sack TD.

3. Mac. At times he was good, he was dealing with an unreliable OL, but, the failure of the last drive, when he hit the deep ball to Bourne, was because he was unable to hit the shorter stuff - and when he did he set Agholor up to get blown up, leading to a turnover.

I would not be surprised if both of these teams finish below .500. The Dolphins did not look good, and because of turnovers and inability to make big plays* by the Pats, they handled the Pats easily. Maybe the Pats clean up their act and become good, maybe they don't. Neither would be a shock to me.

* When given time and able to step into a bomb, Mac's arm looked fine. When he needs to throw an out or rifle one into tight coverage over the middle, his arm looked awful. When his pocket collapsed and he had to rush his throws, also not great. Maybe they need to throw deep a whole heck of a lot more often than they do, to loosen defenses up.

Edit: Mac going for X-rays after the game. Maybe an injury is part of why he looked so awful (other than the deep balls) on that last drive. That would not exectly bode well for the team.

The Pats spent 20 years playing smart football and being content to hang in games and sit back until the other team vomited on themselves which happened more often than not. Today the Dolphins did not do anything particularly good out there, but the Pats turned the ball over, committed stupid penalties, made mental errors that led to negative plays, and just generally shat all over themselves. Maybe this belongs in the “Is Bill losing his fastball” thread, I dunno.

Anyway:

Mac
O-Line
Defense had its moments but too many 3rd down conversions and the inexcusable play at the end of the 1st half.

This is not a good team. That’s not Week 1 hyperbole, it’s in line with what we heard during much of the preseason about the offense and what we saw on the field today.

Jones is about to get to know the REAL Boston media, Drew Bledsoe style.

There was nothing today to convince me this is more than a 6-win team. You have to score more than 7 points in an NFL game in 2022.

Trent Brown, for me, if I’m picking one guy. He looked a step behind everyone most of the game, and wasn’t making adjustments when his role wasn’t to block the (usually much smaller) guy in front of him, both on running and passing plays.

Offense lived down to every expectation.

The defense had to call a timeout when Miami decided to go for it on 4th-and-1. Such a scenario should have been prepped for extensively all week. Clearly, the confusion from the last 2 seasons on defense continues. I am still wondering about McCourty running up from the secondary before the snap and Tua throwing a TD pass right where McCourty had started from in the secondary to end the first half.

Both teams look to end up around 7-8 wins, assuming Mac is not seriously injured.

Were they alternating the play calls by quarter? Seemed like were. Judge had the second and fourth which is when the O looked its worst.

Yeah, whiffed on a sweep block that got Stevenson blown up in the backfield. He didn’t look good.

For all the hand-ringing about the play-calling, at least that wasn't the issue. The execution wasn't there, but play-calling wasn't the issue. We moved the ball about as well as we normally do in Miami.

If it wasn't for the blown call on the first drive we're getting at least 3 on that drive. It was bad today, but there are seeds of optimism.

They scored 7 points in the 2022 NFL. That is beyond pathetic. This team has no athletes on offense and it shows. They forced no turnovers.

Why do you insist that BB benched Bourne “for no reason”?

“No athletes on offense…”

Nailed it. And the one they do have, Jonnu, appears to be excellent at everything except for moving a football down a field of grass.

Two missed tackles that would have stopped drives on third downs and he ended up with a PD on what should have been a McCourty pick.
Unfortunate result but tough to fault him there. He was trying to make the play and he likely didn't know that McC was in great position to snag that awful Tua throw.

The OL issues seem both critical and hopefully fixable. Critical in that if they give Jones a bit more time, he might have had some success against the Dolphins - though Mac didn't look good throwing the ball all day - and this game was winnable until the very end. I fully expect the Patriots to try to do whatever they can to increase protection. That was the most glaring issue imo.

Bad game with lots of bad variance but unless they are unlike most Belichick teams they will improve and win 9 or 10. Still a believer in Mac.

Agree with both you guys. Lot of overreaction in the game thread (lol) and in here. This team will be decent and compete for a wildcard.

I just genuinely don’t see it. Where are they above average? I think what most of us are questioning is where they’ll be average anywhere. Defense maybe?

It’s not a good roster.

I'm going to disagree here as the OL can't protect Mac Jones yet the OC, whoever the fuck it is, calls for plays with a ton of vertical routes all game long...just stupid in every aspect.

They needed to run way more short and intermediate routes, screens, slants, etc. to protect jones and they did the opposite.

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter as Miami has a significant advantage in physical talent but play calling did the Patriots no favors today.

This is on BB. He drafted the players that have underperformed, he signed free agents to bloated contracts, he arrogantly believes that coaching offense is something any coach can do, and the team looked unprepared. Could they improve? Maybe, but they are less likely to finish under .500 than above it.

That’s all I got though. Maybe the front seven

Unprepared football team. In every way. Embarrassing. No urgency. Little talent. No cohesion on the OL. The OL and the lack of cohesion on an offense led by two inexperienced coaches (on the offensive side of the ball) and a lack of playmakers. This is all on Belichick. I love the guy, don't want him fired, but it is all his fault and it was all ENTIRELY predictable – and predicted.

For all the “no talent” folk, BB must be coming off one of the greatest coaching seasons in history given their success last year with a rookie QB.

you can’t have it both ways

Harris/Stevenson is a great combo but with little ability to protect the QB or consistently drive the ball downfield with chunk plays, the run game will not be uniquely scary to defenses.

Last years, team had more talent. Mason would be the best OG on this team, JC would be the best corner.

Dugger was great except he gave up the back breaking TD at the end of the first half - it was an inexcusable play by a safety at the end of a half
I might be wrong, but I thought Dugger got injured in the previous play and was out.

And it’s not JUST the lack of talent on the roster. They are trying to install a new offense with unqualified coaches. The offensive line is coached so poorly that they almost managed to break their starting quarterback in the first game. This team is dumpster fire and it is 100% on the head coach.
