1. The entire secondary, but Chung in particular
2. The D-line. Another week without a consistent pass rush.
3. Edelman. He played a great game, but the fumble was inopportune
4. McDaniels. Play calling at the end was suspect. Give the ball to Blount four times instead of getting cute.

La Mancha.
Players in coverage looked completely lost when they went with that silly 2-man rush. That's got to be on the coaches. I love Matt P., but he gets a goaty from me this week.

The defense
The play call on fourth down
Whichever ref was responsible for monitoring the play clock; in my opinion the Seahawks clearly snapped the ball after the play clock expired at least three times and there were two or three other occasions where I think it could've been called

Secondary -- completely out of sorts and lacksadaisical
Special teams -- kickoffs, Jones fumble, coverage
Ball protection -- Edelman, Gronk, Jones, Brady -- sloppy all game
McDaniels -- give the damn ball to Blount at the goalline and them beat you for fucks' sake

The defense. Even when we only rushed 2 they had guys open.

Play calling on final drive. Give it to Blount twice and see where you are.

Just a crappy game all around. Kind of shocked we only lost by 7.

Defense. I wish we had the kind of defense where the team could have tried play action on first and goal, and not been worried about time on the clock.

The defense in the end of the half has been a problem in recent years too. The Jarvis Landry TD. Jordy Nelson. The Super Bowl. A few others too. Teams scoring TDs wth very little time and no time outs.

Secondary/play calling for the reasons mentioned above.

Edelman for not going down and getting stripped of the ball which was a huge momentum swing.

Brady didn't play very well and had some bad mistakes. Missed some throws, had that terrible interception and really messed up with the botched QB sneak on third and goal.

Nothing has made me so outwardly angry in a while than that no call in the endzone which capped off a particularly infuriating loss. Thank god we are playing SF next week.

Old story, but credible play-action threat is key for red zone scoring vs. the better NFL defenses.

Really bad play calling on that last drive; Belichick needs to take the blame for that.

Defense is crap right now. They've lost a lot of players over the last couple of seasons; may just be too much to overcome this time around.

Defense was so confused tonight, it will be better. Whether it shows enough pass rush or generates enough turnovers the rest of the way will be the big issue.

The play calling was too cute on both sides of the ball. A fade on a do-or-die play, which took all decision-making out of the GOAT's hands against a stellar defense, was incredibly dumb. Let him make a read and pull the trigger.

This one was all on the coaches.

Logan Ryan, and the play calling on the final 1st-and-goal set of downs. Every single play where they had a receiver with no one around him, or just generally too open for how few rushers they were, seemed to be a guy for whom Ryan was responsible. I can't remember seeing a CB try to play zone and yet somehow be still so unaware of the location of the receiver he was supposed to cover.

I can't help but wonder if this sudden shift in defense was the result of the Collins trade, and the coaching staff outsmarting itself trying to shift the defense entirely, given that they were taking Roberts off the field in obvious passing situations.

Agree with everyone else, re: just let Blount jump over the pile three times. He was nearly in the first time, without even extending the ball. Why not try again?

The sad thing about the D: it is really healthy. Freeny is the only defensive player on IR; Branch is the only one on the injury report. There ain't no cavalry; this is as good as it's going to get.

Calling a low percentage fade pass which became an even lower percentage play once cam chancellor lined up across from Gronk is pretty maddening. Try that on first down, fine. Try that with the game on the line, stupid. I know Blount got stuffed on second down but he has been tremendous this year. Hand the ball to Blount and live with the result. That was stupid and too cute by half.

I am fine with every single playcall at the end there, they just couldn't execute. The goat was the defense, obviously. Butler and Flowers played ok, but pretty much everyone else stunk. Roberts worried me tonight, he looked lost and overmatched physically. Does Mingo get a chance at some point?

Entire D, the secondary was bad but this Dline was gashed by a bad SEA Oline and 200lb RB.
Ghost had another troubling game. Kickoff OOB was obviously on him, not sure if the line drive that was also returned for 40yards was or if that was designed but he has been below average this year for an average kicker, nevermind his lofty standards.

If Mingo hasn't taken snaps from the corpse of Chris Long by now then he never will. Between Nink and Long they might have the worst set of ends in the league.

I'm will the Josh/Bill blame party re that last play. I mean I get it. Gronk is impossible to cover. But why not let Tom take the ball a few yards behind the line of scrimmage and choose between a few options? Seems much more likely to work.

And where is Jabaal Sheard? The guy was a beast when healthy last year. And now he almost never see the field.

Last, a collective goat to the D for only one three and outs and two punts forced.

The defence was massively disappointing tonight, but I also give a consideration to Chris Hogan, who looked disinterested at times. Two plays that stick out in my mind: his (lack of) blocking near the red zone earlier in the game during a play to Bennett -- if he had been blocking, it might've been a TD for Bennett. Secondly, he lined up in the slot to Brady's left, and Tom was screaming at him to motion, but he was looking the other way. Finally he realised Tom was talking to him and he finally motioned to the other side.

1.) Coleman, who nudges out Ryan for king of goats in the secondary because he also fucked up on special teams. (Side note -- i see lots of criticism for Chung and he surely screwed up the coverage on the TD at the end of the first half...but also note that Jimmy Graham wasn't a huge factor and guessing Chung had something to do with that.)

2.) DL (save Flowers). The pass rush was actually as good as it's been all year, but that's a low bar and Prosise and a shitty OL got a lot more yards on the ground than anybody could've/should've expected.

3.) LB ccoverage of short passes wasn't up to par, particularly vs Prosise. Prosise was 7/87 AS A RECEIVER ffs.

4 - bonus). Hogan didn't play a lot, but he sucked. Didn't look to his back shoulder on a ball Brady put there, and inexplicably gave up when BRady overthrew a long bomb in his direction. Plus what Peavy says above (we posted simultaneously)

I loved the play of the tight ends, from Edelman (fumble notwithstanding), and Amendola. Blount gave a ton of effort, and I'm pissed they didn't just give him the ball four times on the last series. OL wasnt bad, containing the penalties and sporadically opening holes for LGBT. Butler was fantastic.

This was the game to rush the passer. The Seattle offensive line is an embarassment. Why they didn't do this the whole game is a mystery.

Secondary and the defense overall we really bad. Bill and company got cute at the end trying to burn the clock and forgot if you don't actually score, the clock means nothing. Just awful job all around.

This guy

Seahawks-Patriots was one of the few “circle it” games on the schedule the moment it came out. It is two of the league’s best teams, plus a rematch of one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever played, plus a collection of huge personalities (Brady, Sherman, Gronk, Carroll, Belichick, Russ) in a league that is running low on them. Not to mention, in a season of sinking ratings, this is the first Sunday Night game coming post-election and post-World Series. It’s a chance for the NFL to put its best foot forward and basically send the message that they’re back and ready to dominate your free time for the next three months.

So why is the league getting these teams together on such a screwy schedule? The Seahawks are being forced to fly cross-country after playing Monday night, to face a Patriots team coming off a bye and playing at home. I think, come January, we’ll be saying Seattle is the best team in the NFC. But asking them to play Monday night and then go 3,000 miles to play the league’s best team on five day’s rest? That’s too tall an order. Howard Katz and Co. dropped the ball on this one. And the NFL is at risk of showing the public yet another primetime dud.
One other reason this one could get ugly that is out of the league’s hands: the Michael Bennett injury. Bennett was a dominant force in Super Bowl XLIX, even after Cliff Avril left that game (and for those of you box score-only viewers, Bennett had no sacks in that game but had four hits on Brady, who consistently got the ball out quickly). Ernie Adams had said that containing Bennett was the New England offense’s top priority in that game. The Patriots likely slept a little more soundly on Saturday night knowing Bennett was ruled out.

Can't find a way to blame anybody except the defense. Huge pass plays all night long and not a chance to stop them. Some were nice throws by Wilson, but so many were instances when guys were just wide open.

The sad part is, if the defense had done pretty much anything, they likely win this game. The offense had a few hiccups early, such as Brady's strange INT, but came up with big drive after big drive to respond to SEA scores. I thought they moved the ball pretty well agains a very good D.

At this point this feels more like 2010-2011 where the offense has to play near perfect to beat great teams than 2014 where the D could come up with a stop (although the loss in Green Bay was somewhat similar; of course, that was a road game).

At least the Pats haven't peaked yet. We've seen that movie before where they just look unbeatable in October and November then either regress or get hit hard by injuries. Stay healthy and keep working on D. So much football to play.

He was a gametime decision with a back injury; maybe he shouldn't have been active.

Loss is basically on the defense and turnovers. Hard to win when you're -2 in turnovers and there's no excuse for allowing all the yards on the ground in the first half to a bad offensive line, or leaving guys wide open in an 8 or 9-man zone. For once they actually got a little pass rush, but Wilson is too good for it to affect him much and they couldn't cover so it didn't matter.

I thought the playcalling at the end was fine; just picked the worst time to blow the QB sneak. They get in on that play 90% of the time. You also probably don't want to show all your plays in a midseason game against a non-conference team. I like what Blount has done this year but I believe he has a pretty high stuff rate.

Is this just what happens to all defenses these days when playing a great offense? Seattle's vaunted D was a yard away from having 31 hung on them, just like the Pats.

Seattle hadn't to this point been a great offense though, especially running the ball. Maybe they figured out their offensive line problems overnight? Or, the Pats D is bad.

7 Red Zone trips by the Seattle offense and -2 turnovers. Really could have been much worse, probably should have been worse. Even though they were a yard away from tying it up, they played like shit and deserved to lose.

Goats:

Coaching - The end of the first half defense was ridiculous. The overall game plan on D seemed to make no sense.

Secondary - a million guys back in coverage and guys were wide open and they still gave up yards in huge chunks.

Ball Security - Really could have been worse in terms of turnovers

Special teams: twice gave Seattle great field position after scores. If you are going to insist on the bend-but-not-break defense, field position is key. Plus they were lucky on the Jones fumble.

Last note: How does this team start forcing a few turnovers? They have thrown 1 pick through 9 games and are only +1 in turnover margin. 9 turnovers forced in 9 games good for 25th in the league. Being able to force a turnover here and there would help a ton, but they just play so soft and conservative on D that it isn't going to happen unless the other team just fucks up.

This.

For goats, I have to think McCoutry and Harmon had poor games. When that many deep plays are completed, you have to imagine that better safety play would have fooled Wilson into throwing it to the wrong guy at least once.

Jeez, I haven't been this angry about an outcome and fearful for what it portends going forward since... oh, wait.

The play that I keep coming back to is the Seattle TD at the end of the first half. Sloppy zone coverage, miles of space between defenders, passing a WR off to space with no one picking him up for the easiest TD pass you'll ever see....I haven't seen defense that bad since the '91 Pats. Completely lost out there.

Pro tip: Coleman can't play. Logan Ryan can't play. McClellin can't play.

I'm not sure if it was obvious on TV, but being at the game, I was shocked at how many times the Patriots DB's seemed to have no idea where they were supposed to be. They were on the wrong side of the field, covering the wrong guy.

Single coverage of the RB, who's in the slot, with a linebacker in single press coverage is a recipe for disaster, which killed them a number of times late in that game.

This one is just a math problem. You play one high safety, you can have one safety down in the box to cover the TE or the RB. Obviously they don't want to put a LB on Graham, so that leaves a LB on Prosise. It's pretty much unavoidable; one of your LB has to be able to cover.
