Well, it's been a long time but NE finally won a game again.

Game ball time:

1. OL for doing its job
2. Cam & Myers for getting much much needed chemistry going
3. Falk for nailing the game winner

Yeah, it's the Jets but a win is a win. I'll take it.

Falk retired a long time ago. He came back for the kick?

Seriously, though, the offensive line was good and Harris was better.

Obviously Meyers is #1 with a bullet, but despite the massive hate he got in the game thread Cam was very good and came up huge when they needed it most

Gase, Flacco and Dowell Loggains for the Jets’ 4th quarter abysmal offensive plan and execution.

Meyers and Cam. If you’re criticizing Cam I don’t know what you’re watching the last 2 weeks. He’s been really good in the last 6 quarters. Looks more confident throwing the football.

Meyers—what can you say? He was a baller.

Meyers- Looks like he can get open regularly. Not sure why he was an after thought last year and early on this season.

Cam- Footwork/mechanics and slow processing issues are still there but he made some nice throws down the stretch.

The offense as a whole seemed improved. The Jets are dreadful but 30 points with limited possessions and no short fields is an improvement. Seems they found something at halftime last week. Their drives since then:

Punt
TD
TD
Fumble
TD
Punt
Downs
FG
End of half
TD
FG
TD
FG

Points on 8 of 12 drives (excluding the kneel down). 2 of he non-scoring drives ended in opponents territory. It's not pretty or efficient but they've taken some baby steps forward over the last 6 quarters.

The defense on the other hand is a disaster.

Meyers x 2. Has he really improved this much or was he good last year and the Pats and Brady just pissed away his talent by not going to him?

Cam, Harris, Burkhead and Folk too but the Thuney/Andrews double team on the Jets NT on the QB sneak was a game highlight

Meyers was an undrafted rookie last year who put together a solid season considering, and now he's looking much improved in year 2. Sounds like pretty normal progression, not really some situation where Brady and/or the Pats refused to use him last year.

Cam played really well
Jakobi Meyers breakout game
Harris/Burkhead ran hard
Defense didn’t give up despite being undermanned
McD and BB showed up with less than a full squad
Folk smoking a 51 yarder and putting on sunglasses in doing so

Flacco looked not-washed tonight. The pre game show made a big deal of the Jets finally having their top three receivers back which probably made a difference. His first TD throw to Perriman, a 50 yard bomb on the run, would have been a play shown on highlight reels a million times if it was thrown by Mahomes. His TD throw to Crowder was one of the best throws you will see all season. He sucked in the fourth quarter, but I was expecting a terrible performance by him tonight but he did a really good job.

Adam Gase for deciding to be as timid as possible on offense in the 4th quarter.
On that note, I was very surprised in the 1st quarter when BB declined a holding penalty (which would have made it 3rd and 17) around midfield and even more surprised that Gase punted (on 4th and 2)

Cam Newton entered Monday night 1-38 when trailing by double-digits in 4th quarter, his only win coming in 2018 vs Eagles. But he and Pats overcame a 10-point, 4th-quarter deficit to avoid their first 5-game lose streak since 1995. Jets now 0-9 for first time in franchise history"

They had 4 plays in the 4th quarter over 2 drives, and called 4 passes including throwing a bomb on the first play of a drive when they had a touchdown lead. They were the opposite of timid and it burned them, with the game tied they failed to move the ball, failed to make the patriots use timeouts, and failed to burn much clock because they went hurry up even after the sack and threw another incompletion.

Yeah, they went for broke with about 6 minutes left and a 7 point lead. Should have gone for 1st downs instead of the knockout blow. It was a pretty awful loss for the coaching staff.

Game ball to Trevor Lawrence. The Jets just wanted it more than the Pats.

Punting in 4th and 3 from the Pats 43 in the first quarter was pathetic

O-line and Meyers both deserve a share of the game ball. They stepped up when we needed it.

Honorable mention to Newton. Cam's pocket footwork and field vision weren't great, but he was good throwing and never looked especially rattled or lost when they were down late. He moved the ball with his arm and his feet, and put winning points on the board.

Only saw the highlights, but the Jet player who touched down Meyers with three seconds left. What happens if he just lets Jacobi sit there?
Kneel down, ("give himself up", as they say) call TO. But it would've put the onus on meyers to make the smart move and not run.

I still have no idea what the Jets were doing on that last play. The Pats were at their own 47 with 8 seconds remaining and 1 timeout. Everyone knew that they were looking for a 15-20 yard play and quick TO. The Jets, knowing all that, still had their safeties playing way back. Made absolutely zero sense. In that scenario, you should want the other team to take a low percentage deep shot that would take up all of the remaining time.

Pats beat an 0-8 team in the last few seconds of the game.
Newton still makes poor reads/decisions and relies on his aging athleticism.
The overall defense is mediocre.

There are several ugly games in the future.

The Pats' run defense is pretty bad. And Joe Flacco threw for 262 yards and 3 td against the Pats' secondary.

Baltimore might put up 50 next week.

Meyers---what, exactly, do we have moving forward?
Damien Harris

Newton--it's almost like he caught this virus ravaging the world and, while now healthy enough to play, is taking some time getting back to where he was-IN A SEASON WITH NO TRAINING CAMP THEN ESSENTIALLY A 2 WEEK HIATUS IN MIDDLE OF IT. He's not Brady, and if we keep comparing his throwing motion, or the fact that he didn't fit it in a tight window that Brady used to hit all the time we will NEVER EVER BE HAPPY WITH ANY QB EVER AGAIN.

I'm about to Eric Van the crap out of some numbers:

Game 1-3: 62/91 714 yards 4 TD, 4 INT, 35 carries 179 yards, 4 TDs
second half Buffalo: 9/12 95 yards, 3 carries 26 yards, 1 TD, 1 fumble
Last night: 27/35 274 yards, 10 carries 16 yards, 2 TD

Total: 95 for 138, 68.8% completions, 1083 yards, 2/2 TD/INT, 48 carries, 221 yards, 7 TDs, 1 fumble

Pro-rated (4.5 games to 16): 338/491, 3855 yards, 7/7 TD/INT, 171 carries, 787 yards, 25 TDs, 91.0 passer rating.

Cam on Monday with no weapons sure looked better than TB12 on Sunday with a Dream Team.
One was playing against a team that has a better than average pass defense who was able to rear back and put pressure up the middle on the QB all game. The other was playing a team that will be lucky to win a game all season.

Four straight games with zero passing TDs is going to make it tough for Cam to close the 18 TD gap and catch TB12.

Meyers, OL (esp interior), Harris, Burkhead. HM to Cam and Jakob.

Defense struggled all night. J McCourty continued his rough season but wasn't alone last night.

I wouldn't blame the play calling on the interception. That was on Flacco. Once, he saw the coverage, he should have went elsewhere. He had the TE wide open for what likely would have been a 20+ yard gain. The last series the Jets should have worried about running the clock more. Play it both ways until you move the ball but hey they want Trevor.

Very much this. The Jets wouldn’t be 0-8 if they had this version of Flacco at QB all season.

When I watched Flacco earlier in the season, it looked like his accuracy had deserted him — he could still read the D and make the right throw, but he couldn’t put it on target. Obviously, that wasn’t an issue last night. Not sure if last night was a fluke or if Flacco was dealing with some issue earlier that’s behind him now.

Worth noting: like many of the Pats' games this year, this was a short game: each team only had 8 drives (technically the Pats had a 9th drive at the end of the second Q, but it was just a kneel-down) where normally a team would have 11 or 12. That means the offense was even more impressive than the 30 points suggest, and the defense was worse than allowing 27 points would indicate. It was the O's second-best game by EPA (behind Seattle) and the D's second-worst (behind SF).

I mean, this is cute, but running them in also counts for 6.
I don't feel like the post I was responding to was really saying Cam looked better than Brady this past Sunday because Cam ran for 16 yards though. Cam is what he is at this point, and 2 passing TDs total and four straight games without a passing TD is pitiful no matter how you slice the baguette(that has to be nearing a record at this point). His rushing has definitely managed to offset those stunningly bad numbers which is definitely to his credit. Cam certainly was better on Sunday, yes, but it's for all intents and purposes that's totally irrelevant given the season totals and Sunday's relative opponents.

The point is that it's completely arbitrary whether they run in the ball at the goal line or pass it. Cam only has 2 passing TDs, but he has 8 rushing TDs. 10 TDs / 7 INTs still isn't great, but it's a lot better than 2 /7 and a lot more indicative of how he has played this year.

I'm not saying he'll be as good because it's a high bar, but Damien Harris has a lot of Corey Dillon in him. Love those bull runners who keep their legs grinding.

I know it's the Jets but pretty refreshing to see most of the WR targets going to receivers who are unambiguously open. it didn't necessarily look like anything fancy from Meyers but given that the starter he is ostensibly replacing is only ever targeted within 5 yards of the LOS, it's still notable. Doesn't have elite speed, elite quickness, elite hands, or elite route running, but I see a guy who could be good enough at all those things to be a serviceable 2/3 WR, assuming we can get our hands on a true #1 and eventually put the rookie tight ends to use. Basically what we were hoping Malcolm Mitchell could be. Nice to see after he was sort of the forgotten man in the position group.

I hope Harris is alright. He is a beast.

Is it arbitrary? They run the ball because Cam is bad at throwing and they don't have any good red-zone targets.

Cam is 12/23 for 79 yards, 2TDs / 0 INT, and 3.4 Y/A in the red-zone. 23 rushes for 58 yards at 2.8 Y/A, but 8 TD and 10 first downs. He's a bad passer in the red-zone so they play to his strength. Again, it's great that he gets value out of his legs, but he's not nearly in the company of the guy who walked out the door.

Yes, Cam Newton is not as good as Tom Brady. There are of course many QBs who are not as good as Tom Brady but are still good.

I don't have any context for those red zone numbers, to be honest. With less space and no possibility of a long gainer, Y/A are going to be depressed, both running and passing. The red zone offense as a whole is a little better this year (15/27; 14/24 throwing out the non-Cam KC game) than it was last year (30/60); it is still not great. Cam on the goal line is their best play, which is why he has scored half the team's offensive touchdowns. That's not reflected in his passing statistics, but it is an element of his game that NE takes advantage of.

Of course, passing TDs don't have to be in the red zone, and it's a pretty big black mark against the Patriots passing offense that their longest receiving TD this year is by Rex Burkhead.

I mean, this is cute, but running them in also counts for 6.
And also...handing off to a RB who runs it in also counts for 6.

Yards per game:
TB: 349.0
NE: 361.9

First downs per game:
TB: 21.3
NE: 23.1

Yards per play:
TB: 5.5
NE: 5.6

So all this looks to be in favor of New England's offense, as hard as that is to believe. So why does this stat happen?

Points per game:
TB: 27.8
NE: 20.8

Answer: turnovers.

% of drives ending in a turnover:
TB: 9.8%
NE: 21.4% (worst in the league)

% of drives ending in a score:
TB: 43.1%
NE: 34.3%
