Sony got 2 3rd and short carries that hurt his average. He also had a 1 yard TD. When you only get 10 carries and 3 of them are short yardage situations that hurts the average. Sony had runs of: 1 (TD), 1, 2 (first down), 2 (first down), 3, 4, 5, 5, 7, 7. Not once stopped for no-gain is an improvement from last year. Taking away obvious short yardage situations he was 7 for 32 which is ~4.6 yards a carry. That is an improvement from his play last year. I still want to see what Harris can bring as I am not sold on Sony but liked what I saw so far in 2020 vs his uninspiring 2019.
Thanks for checking that. It is also possible on small screen I attributed something to Sony that wasn't him.

I think a cool breakdown might be which RBs got the "standard" hand-offs and which one got the ones where Cam stuck ball into them but held on to possibly take it back and run, etc.

Seems to me that more than once the "long handoff" or fake was with 28--someone with good hands, intelligence and experience.

Obviously Newton.

Let's also give one to the zebras for ruling Newton in on his second TD and not calling PI on the Jackson pick.

Add me to the list of those who are optimistic about JJ Taylor. Shades of Mini Mack Herron. Here's to more of him in the game plan next week.

A weekly HM to BBII (aka Stephen Belichick) for allowing me to daydream about the dynasty continuing for another 2 decades, long after BB retires.

I was reviewing PFF and FO this morning and in PFF Sony was the 13th highest rated RB and the 14th highest rated for just running so far. With FO he was 6th in DYAR and 3rd in DVOA%. Small-small-small-small sample size but he passed my eye test and it looks like the advanced stats say he did well too. Obviously this is just one game but giving credit where it is due. He had a good game.

Edit: FO
34219

PFF:
34220

That 80% success rate stands out. Was nice to see Sony convert on short yardage after he struggled there last season. He converted two 3rd-and-1s early on, then he had the one yard TD plunge on first-and-goal, right after Cam had converted on 4th-and-1. All good stuff.

The Pats only converted 62.5% of the time in those situations (3rd or 4th down, one yard to go) last season. I don't really have a lot of context for what a "good" or "bad" % should look like there, but that seems pretty bad. Sony got a lot of those touches too, with bad results: 13 carries, 11 yards, 8 first downs (or TDs). Good start for Sony in those spots yesterday: 2 carries, 4 yards, 2 first downs.

Football Outsiders tracks "power" situations in their offensive line stats, which is 3rd and 4th, 1 or 2 to go, plus runs on the 1 or 2 yard line. Pats were 17th in the NFL at 65% in 2019, almost exactly average (64%). They were 100% Sunday ... but so were 8 other teams. I imagine they will be one of the better teams at this, but we should obviously expect some regression.

I got to meet him once in the Carolina locker room, he is enormous. He was already in cleats and pads, and towered over me. I’m 6’5” 220 and I felt VERY small. He’s a beast.
Cam is listed as 6'5". Either he's bigger than he's listed at or the other players who are listed at 6'5" aren't really 6'5".

Yeah, he was in spikes (on carpet in the locker room) and with helmet on, so it seems much bigger in general coupled with the fact he is just a big, broad dude. He made me feel small and we are of similar size was the point.
