The future is so bright...it's the 2023 Pats Draft Contest!

@Mugsy's Jock called, @SMU_Sox and I are answering - back for another year, it's the draft contest!

We'll stick to last year''s basic structure: 1 point for each correctly-predicted draft pick or UDFA signed within 72 hours of the Mr. Irrelvant pick. I'll sweeten the annual $50 to the Jimmy Fund by adding $5 for each drafter who finishes above me (NOT a high bar!), up to a max of another $50/$100 total. So - more erudite players, more dough for Dana Farber!

The donation will be made in the name of the contest winner. In the case of a tie, earlier (or earliest, if its a multi-way tie) entry wins. Please list the 20 young'uns you think will need to break out the shades to enjoy the bright lights in Foxborough!

Re: those selections...

  • 20mplayers (thanks, @pappymojo!)
  • Lastname, Firstname format preferred - alphabetical order also preferred, though less important.
  • Position and school are helpful
  • Any thoughts on why the player would make the Pats better would be great to see. Even if those thoughts come from @SMU_Sox...
All slates need to be final before the draft starts Thursday Apr 27.

Good luck, everybody! Time for me to start working on my annual "I finished last for a good cause" slate of pics.

Yes!!!!

Not stated in the original post, but 20 players, correct?

I am building my list by position. Four players each from what I think are the four biggest positions of need (OT, WR, Edge, CB), followed by four players from other positions. The consensus seems to be that OT is top heavy but that other positions of need are much deeper. I bolded a couple of players from outside OT who I think they might grab if they fell to 14. I know that some of the players marked as OT may move inside in the NFL. I really wish I had more slots to include more tight ends and safeties. Edited to remove Darnell Wright based on character concerns.

Harrison, Anton, OT, Oklahoma
Johnson Jr., Paris, OT, Ohio State
Mauch, Cody, OT, North Dakota State
Steen, Tyler, OT, Alabama
Wright, Darnell, OT, Tennessee

Bennett, Jakorian, CB, Maryland
Forbes, Emmanuel, CB, Mississippi State
Gonzalez, Christian, CB, Oregon
Rush, Darius, CB, South Carolina

Adebawore, Adetomiwa, Edge, Northwestern
Anudike-Uzomah, Felix, Edge, Kansas State
McGuire, Isaiah, Edge, Missouri
White, Keion, Edge, Georgia Tech

Jones, Charlie, WR, Purdue
Mingo, Jonathan, WR, Ole Miss
Perry, A.T., WR, Wake Forest
Smith-Njigba, Jason, WR, Ohio State

Benton, Keeanu, DL, Wisconsin
Brown, Sydney, S, Illinois
LaPorta, Sam, TE, Iowa
Schoonmaker, Luke, TE, Michigan

Just Missed the Cut:
Brents, Julius, CB, Kansas State
Thomas V, Starling CB, UAB
Wright, Rezjohn, CB, Oregon

Johnson, Roschon, RB, Texas

Branch, Brian, S, Alabama
Martin, Jartavius, S, Illinois
Robinson, Jamie, S, Florida State
Smith, Christopher, S Georgia

Campbell, Jack, LB, Iowa (really, really want the Patriots to draft him)
Diabate, Mo, LB, Utah
Pace Jr., Ivan, LB, Cincinnati
Sewell, Noah, LB, Orgeon

Smith, Mazi, DL, Michigan (really, really want the Patriots to draft him)

Hutchinson, Xavier, WR, Iowa State

Wilson, Michael, WR, Stanford

Avila, Steve, OL, TCU (really, really want the Patriots to draft him)
Bradford, Anthony, OL, LSU
Broeker, Nick, OL, Ole Miss
Forsyth, Alex OL, Oregon

Durham, Payne, TE, Purdue
Kincaid, Dalton, TE, Utah (really, really want the Patriots to draft him)

McDonald IV, Will, Edge, Iowa State

New York City
1. Nic Jones CB Ball State (apparently showed well at shrine game)
2. Brian Branch Alabama -- slow enough to be someone they might get in round two or three--
3. Mo Diabete LB Utah (his name makes me want to make a wilfred brimley joke)
4 Isiah Moore LB NC State
5. Eric Scott Jr CB Southern Miss (6'2" 192 per shrine bowl coverage Pats coaches liked his press coverage)
6. Jaxon Smith_Njigba WR OS
7. Zay Flowers WR BC (why not)
8. Hunter Luepke FB
9 Noah Sewell LB Oregon
10 Tyrus Wheat LB Miss State
11 Myles Brook CB Louisiana Tech

20 Bryce Ford Wheaton WR West virginia (

UDFA Prospects list

Payne Durham TE Purdue (FORMER LAX!)
Michael Wilson (not a udfa probably)
Michael Turk P Oklahoma
Andrew Carter DE/OLB Army (testing very poorly might slip pretty late) replaces Brenton Cox Jr Edge Jr Florida (headcase, BB spent time with him)
Malik Heath WR Mississippi (fast 3 cone)
Dalton Wagner OL Arkansas. Very tall and actually fairly nimble. They seem to like that.
AF Finley S Ole Miss
Jake Witt, OT Northern Michigan (replace Tyler Steen OT Alabama)
Andrew Voorhes OL USC (tore his ACL at the combine so prefect for like a sixth round pick; replacing Olusegun Oluwatimi C Michigan.
Jack Colletto FB Oregon State (sort of a H-back/TE type)
Brenton Cox LB/Heacase Floridia
Ryan Walk C Oregon
TJ Bass OG Oregon (might be draftable)
Trey Dean Safety Florida*David Durden, West Florida, WR. Putting an asterisk on this one because he's my designated "sixth round draft pick to play speical teams" guy of the year. Fast physical WR who was a baseball player and drafted by the sox years ago.
Shaka Heyward LB Duke ILB type. Might be draftable had a suprisingly fast 40 (4.53) at the combine)

11. Harrison, Zach Edge Ohio State
12. Johnson, Paris OL Ohio State
13. Kraft, Tucker TE South Dakota State
14. Matlock, Scott DL Boise State
15. Moss, Riley CB Iowa
16. Perry, AT WR Wake Forest
17. Tinsley, Mitchell WR Penn State
18. Tune, Clayton QB Houston
19. Turner, DJ CB Michigan
20. Voorhees, Andrew OL USC

I hope there is an opportunity for the Pats to trade down. Unless Paris Johnson is on the board at 14, I don't love the options there.

Would rather get an extra dart or two to throw in the 50ish range. Compared to the consensus, I'm high on Zach Harrison, and really high on Tucker Kraft and Riley Moss. I love Riley Moss.

Combination of what I hope they do, what I think they might do and a healthy sprinkling of "didn't know you existed till you landed on the top 30 list".

Is 7 Joneses a gimmick? Sure... but I actually would be happy with pretty much all of them (Truman maybe for less rational reasons than the rest). Start me off with Dawand or Broderick, please.

Edit: Oh shit, @Ale Xander beat me to it. No keeping up the the Joneses, I suppose.

Okay - I generally do more research than this (or at least, crib from @SMU_Sox ), but I get nearly all of 'em wrong anyhow, so...since the Jones's thing is done already, let's do the one-per-school trick!

It is probably pretty clear from the below, but - as I have no faith at all in Mac, I'm hoping that the Pats invest in the ability to move the ball on the ground, and stop the other team from doing same.

Robinson, Bijan - RB - TX
Luepke, Hunter, FB - ND State
Spawn-Ford, Brevn - TE - Minn
Washington, Darnell - TE- Georgia
Mayer, Michael - TE - Notre Dame
Wright, Darnell - OT - TN
Bresee, Bryan - DT - Clemson
Smith, Mazi - DT - Michigan
Branch, Brian - S - Alabama
Brown, Sidney - S - Illinois
Robinson, Jammie - S - FL State
Campbell, Jack - LB - Iowa
Herbig, Nick - LB - Wisconsin
Flowers, Zay - WR - BC
Rie, Rashee - WR - SMU
Porter Jr., Joey - CB - Penn St
Brents, Julius - CB - Kansas St
McDonald, Will - Edge - Iowa State
Adebawore, Adetomiwa - Edge - Northwestern
Korsak, Adam - P - Rutgers

FTR, I really wanted to pick Monte Pottebaum of Iowa, but not as much as I am hopig that Jack Campbell becomes a Pat.

To be fair, one of the best placekickers in college switching positions would be an amazing prediction to hit.

Left Campbell off because he reminds me too much of Chenal. It's heartbreaking to see that dude on the Chiefs...

Campbell is the opposite of Leo. Campbell is an advanced coverage guy… he’s deadly in zone.

Somewhere
Feeling glad that I didn't go too heavy on defensive backs or first rounders, because I didn't think Gonzalez would slide.

Looks like only me an pappymojo predicted the Gonzalez slide, that was definitely a hope pick for me. Off to a good start.
