I don't think it's unpopular. Hanley at 5/$90 mill is a steal. And I don't understand why people seem to think the Red Sox are not still working on getting pitching. Of course they are. It's what they most need. They can walk and chew gum at the same time.

I'd prefer they spend Panda's money on Shields now that Hanley is signed.  I don''t really see the need to sign both of them; pitching is the priority now.
Well if Pablo is signed as well, that moves Hanley to the outfield. The Sox would have 7 outfielders under contract...without even including JBJ. I'd imagine Ben has a deal lined up including at least one of them for pitching if all of this comes to fruition.

Maybe Sandoval just left something at the hotel during his last visit.

A sable hat, perhaps?

That Andrew Vassallo photo from the airplane. Every major Sox transaction now must have a mid-flight photo to go with it.

Any unpopularity is based on them not securing pitching yet.  Seemingly, none of those expressing that concern has accepted these signings free up Cecchini, WMB, Cespedes, Craig, possibly Napoli and Victorino to be dealt for pitching.  These are great adds to the roster and I'm anxious to learn who the pitching adds are.  Don't they have to move players from the 40 man when they sign these guys?  If so, there would likely be a trade announced tomorrow to accommodate that need.

Agree completely.

Btw got your message, kept getting an error when I tried to respond, though.

Anyway, they're still very much in on Lester and I wonder what the Padres want for Tyson Ross, who is intriguing. So is Samardzija, who has been rumored to be available.

Tons of balls in the air right now.

Exactly. They are getting pitching. There is no doubt about it. The FA Hitting Market is much thinner and developed much quicker. Pitching market is moving slower. Now that the majority of FA bats are gone the market for Cespedes should be ripe

So,

- Hanley signs tomorrow.

- Panda arrived in Boston at 11 tonight if you buy that guys picture, which I do, he's wearing his WS ring, it's gotta be him.

- the Sox just added 4 Rule 5 guys to their roster.

There are going to have to be some very quick moves for the Sox not to risk losing anyone off their 40 man. Very, very quick moves. If it's going to work, it's going to have to be a 3 for 1 or 4 for 2 deal, too.

It doesn't have to be that quick really. It's sometimes weeks before players agree to a deal before they are officially signed.

I may be in the minority here but I would love a Panda signing. I think he would wear out the monster with his oppo field swing. And given that Cespedes is a FA after 2014, we have our LF for a few years locked up in Hanley.

I'm thrilled with this. As unpopular as that may be
I'm thrilled with it too. The Sox have the flexibility to bring in all 3 of Pablo, Hanley, and Lester without sacrificing all of their flexibility going forward. There's not really any huge long term commitments on our payroll right now, with the exception of Pedey who's extension came with a pretty awesome discount. X, Mookie, and Vaz all being cost controlled is a big plus for the Sox as well as Napoli and Vic coming off the books post 15 if they're even on the roster to start it.

True, I just assumed that with them both in town, they would have their presser while they are here.

Either way, if they're committing 185mm, they must have a trade in place basically.

Smart not only for the ridiculous lineup but a left side of Hanley and X could very well be porous.
A left side of Sandoval and Hanley isn't exactly solid.

Edit: to be clear, the weak link there would be Hanley at SS; Sandoval should be able to hold down 3b for a couple years at least.

The Boston Red Sox have signed Pablo Sandoval to a 5 year, 102 million dollar deal. Source with Hanley story has confirmed. It's done

Is that "source" the Fla. marketing guy?

I don't like it.  On principal I hate the idea of paying a merely above average player 20mm/year.  And now that we have Hanley, Panda seems completely unnecessary.  If we don't end up with Shields, I'm going to be pissed knowing this money almost certainly could have been allocated to him instead.

I dunno. Lester plus a trade for a pitcher seems like a solid plan as well. Still a lot of offseason to go.

Well, I guess they aren't planning on a bridge year next year. I'm not a huge fan of Sandoval, but I'm going to assume the guys in the front office are smarter than me and that this is a good thing for the team. It's definitely a good thing for the next couple of years at least.

Now go get Lester, trade for Tyson Ross or Mat Latos, bring Andrew Miller back and let's go win a World Series.

I wonder whether it's a 5 year deal that averages $20m or if there is a buyout that takes it over $100m? Maybe $19m per year for 5 years with a $7m buyout or team option for the 6th year.
