I've searched and I've looked and I've looked and I've searched but I've yet to find a topic, or even that many posts, discussing Dan Patrick's post ESPN career radio show and TV simulcast. As a lurker I fear, FEAR, starting a new topic, but now that the show is on 9a-12a on CSN in New England he's going to start coming up a lot more.

Pros:
Format - Patrick has taken the unique route of taking his non-voice talent show crew and putting them on equal footing. I find that if you stick with the show they're more lovable than the host himself--even Seton, the Yankee fan. They are the voice of the actual fan instead of the media personality, when they get folks like Joe Montana in studio they are just as starstruck as we are... and we get to hear what it is really like. Also, in a spot of producing, they have each been given developed "personalities" which I can do without sometimes but there are certainly moments where these are some really entertaining guys you'd like to hang out with.
Anti-Big Media - Since leaving ESPN Patrick seems hell bent on exposing how business is now done in Bristol. Insight on how things used to be with he and Olbermann, heavy criticism about the network's (as he calls it, the mothership) inability to stay impartial while trying to make big bucks ("The Decision," the Texas Longhorn Network), and Patrick's overall civility with his guests are welcome changes to stock sports radio. At times the anti-ESPN rants, especially when they convince an ESPN personality on to the air, can be tediously self-righteous--"Is my name mentioned up there?"
Talent - As mentioned, I find Patrick to be incredibly civil yet still honest as a sports broadcaster. He also has great rapport with regular guests like Rich Eisen, Tony Dungy, and Reggie Miller (When he was on, he hasn't been in a year, something happened--any insight?) Speaking of Miller, he also makes me a fan of things I'm not, like the NBA, college basketball, and college football.
Odds and Ends - I also like how his soccer fan producer gets to plug his sport every once and awhile. As well as NASCAR and other sport outliers.

Cons:
Sox Ignorance - Patrick usually has great conversations with both Francona and Kevin Millar (Then again, who doesn't) but the rest of his Sox coverage is fairly dated. He just had Johnny Damon on this week (8/18/2011), and Dan really wanted to bring back the naked pull-up story. I'd love to hear Pedroia and the other modern Sox stars get some DP show love. As I said there is a Yankee fan on staff, so there is a lot more Yankee stuff, however, this includes the most amazing Jon Sterling lampooning I have ever heard. The Sterling and Waldman rants along might make the Dan Patrick Show a must listen for Sox fans raised in NY as I was.
Format - I love them, but I can easily see how the opinions of the non voice talent folks on this show could rub sports fans the wrong way. Especially Andrew "McLovin'" Perloff, the show blogger and overall dweeb. Part of his schtick is his overblown NFL opinions and if you don't find them funny or mildly interesting I'm sure you will hate him.

Alright, so give him a try and see what you think of his new show. Plus, when the show actually does host New England stars I will now have a topic I can lurk to find out what others thought of the interview. Because really, that's what I do.

Meh...it's a "coffee with the coach" kind of atmosphere. Very light banter, no hard questions, etc.

Not a bad listen by any stretch, and I can see how some people really like the show. But for me, it's similar to "Mike and Mike" without the "Disney."

Yeah ... well, the "Disney" part of Mike & Mike is probably its defining feature, so that's not an insignificant difference.

Among national sports radio, I find the DP Show to be far and away the best - and it's really not close, unless you're a dedicated Rome acolyte (read: more interested in the humor than the sports). Patrick's strengths (very personable, mildly funny, and although he "plays ball" in a media sense he's usually honest about it) carry the show, and the support staff actually do a good job of keeping things "fresh" with a sort of (admittedly feigned "outsider's" perspective.

It's not appointment listening/viewing, but it is markedly better than the competition.

I miss Dan Patrick on ESPN radio. The SVP show annoys the hell out of me and is a huge letdown from The Herd. While Cowherd can be an unapologetic prick and an admitted front runner, he manages to put on an entertaining show and often has an interesting perspective on things. Van Pelt is just unbearable. I used to enjoy flipping to the Dan Patrick Show when driving around in the afternoon and while the show was never unbelievably good, it was consistently solid and a great way to pass time while stuck in traffic or running errands.

I wish his show was available here.

I work from home and always have it on DirecTV in the background. I think he's one of the best interviewers when it comes to current radio personalities. Sure he doesn't attack guests, but he doesn't always let them get by without some awkward questioning.

The Danettes don't talk enough to both me, and when they do it's usually suitable and even fitting. McLovin, however, can go away anytime. He whines about everything - I'm sure it's acting but it's super annoying and pointless. He acts like he's a major star, especially when he talks about the new SI cover that's already been leaked out the day or two before.

If you have DirecTV, it's on the Audience Network (channel 101) from 9-12, then repeats 12-3.

Watching on TV gives you a better insight than the radio since they cut from commercials during every break for a minute or more of whatever they are doing in the mancave. Usually Dan's playing golf or shooting basketball and just chatting with the Danettes.

I love Dan's interviews and regularly visit his site to download them when I don't listen to the program. But some of his show can be pretty brutal in my opinion. Dan himself is really good most days - except when he gets into starfucker mode, talking about his buddy, "The Sandman" or other celeb friends he name drops in conversation (btw, does anybody find Adam Sandler funny or his movies entertaining the past decade...Patrick makes him out to be this cutting edge, relevant superstar). But my biggest gripe is with the Danettes and how their "characters" are forced into the show. Patrick did an interview where he said he wanted to model it after the Stern Show with interesting and entertaining ancillary staff members who inject the show with their real life issues. My problem is those guys are fairly unlikable and incredibly dull. The only Danette I find tolerable is Fritzy because he's self deprecating and doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. The others do nothing but kiss up to Patrick when not playing their assigned roles. They're pretty much just four boring, married, nerds yet Seton thinks he's the hard drinking "rebel" because he didn't finish college and has a couple hideous Irish tattoos and don't get me started on McLovin. They're also always having fake arguments and conflicts about stuff that's so contrived (Dan invited this guy to the Christmas party but not that guy...oh no!). I find that whole aspect of the show forced, phony, and annoying. But hey, it's better than Mike Greenberg or Collin Cowheard I guess.

I miss the days of Tony Kornheiser and Dan Patrick back to back on ESPN Radio - it was the perfect background soundtrack for a day in the office. Colin Cowherd is unlistenable and Scott Van Pelt is just boring.

Which is when it aired until just before the Olympics, when it was replaced by Uno's Sports Tonight followed by 2 hours of infomercials. I figured CSNNE was just taking a 2-week break while DP was in London. But he never returned (no, he never returned) and his fate is still unknown.

Anyone have any info on whether this is permanent and/or what prompted their decision? It was always a decent show to have on in the background while working on various freelance assignments, and far better than anything airing late mornings on The Mothership Family of Networks or either of Boston's sports radio options.

Comcast dropped all Fox Sports Net programming, which included the DP Show.

In case you were wondering, WLVI Channel 56 has picked up FSN college football programming in Boston this fall. So it doesn't look like CSN and FSN are close to an agreement.

so does this mean that Fox Sports Radio will also stop broadcasting? Looks like Dial Network has a shot of picking this up for it's stations

This shouldn't have anything to do with Fox Sports Radio which is actually a Clear Channel property and doesn't have any relation to News Corp. with the exception of branding.

Bump for Burgandy. He's the "guest host" today from 10-noon. They're letting him do the Sarkisian interview today, which might actually be decent, since Ferrell is a USC grad.

DP Show on location in Arizona. So, Direct TV built a studio set. And it is, for some reason, an Old West theme, but whatever.

The indescribably weird enters because in the window behind Patrick is a cowboy on a horse. With a lasso. Just standing there. The horse moves every once and a while, so it's not a cutout or a green screen. There's a just a guy on a horse outside a fake window on a fake Old West set.

I watched some of his show last Monday (he was off, but the show was on).  I always feel that those sets are so contrived.  They cover them with sports bullshit and also pictures of women, and product placement, and it's made to look oh-so-brotastic. Plus there are pictures of Dan Patrick himself in "cool" poses and getups... it's just ridiculous.   Meanwhile, the actual show hosts are spread all over the place, which just seems odd.

Mike Francesa is a fat idiot, but at least he keeps it simple.

While it's still the bulk of their broadcast, it's not just a radio show anymore. They are on the Audience Channel.

And NBCSN for those who don't have Direct TV.  They do daily segments specifically for the TV cameras that don't make it to radio air, such as live "look ins" during commercial breaks where the guys are seen hitting in the golf simulator or playing basketball while shooting the shit about whatever.  The Super Bowl set is usually a super sized version of their little "man cave" studio so that their guests can partake of the fun and games too.

DP is taking some lumps for his dumb question to Gronk last night. He keeps replaying the clip.

costly...Bob Costas will handle trophy ceremony duty in future Super Bowls <sarcasm>

surprised McLovin did not put that as the poll question: Who made a costlier mistake in the Super Bowl: Dan Patrick thinking Gronk won a Super Bowl before or Darrell Bevell's final play call?

Danettes will not let this one go

Solo hosts with no one to play off of when there are no guests make for horrible radio...the result is hot sportz takes to generate calls/texts/tweets or insane ranting and raving (See Francesa).  DP's show is infinitely more listenable because he engages with the Danettes. Talk radio of any kind (sports, political, etc) is all about listening to conversations, not soliloquies.

Cowherd could never carry a national show without the ESPN brand buttressing him.  Hell, he barely carries his show with the ESPN brand buttressing him.

No, they like Bob at the host desk. The smart money would be on Josh Elliott for the next time.
