To me they're still relevant by the fact that they still get into the playoff. I mean, if you're an 8-4 team that manages to win their conference championship, they make it into the playoff, even though they really aren't that good. It's like in the NCAA basketball tournament, conference championships matter a ton for mid-major conferences, because not winning the conference means you likely don't even make the NCAA tourney. Besides, winning your conference is a heck of an accomplishment on its own.
Agreed. I'm all for conference champs making the playoff and being seeded.

FBS Playoff should really be this:

#4 SEC plays #5 SEC (So perhaps Ole Miss v. LSU?)

Winner plays Georgia
#2 SEC (Alabama) plays #3 SEC (Tennessee)
Two winners play each other for the title.
Why? The SEC dropoff after Alabama/LSU is massive. The Big 12 is stronger top to bottom this year.

But an 8-4 team that wins their conference championship (eg, Purdue) wouldn't get a bye, at least not this year. Even in a truly bizarre scenario -- if every single power conference had an upset in the championship game -- your top four conference champs would have been:

1 KSU 10-3
2 Utah 10-3
3 LSU 10-3
4 Tulane 11-2

5 UNC 10-3

9-4 Purdue would be fighting it out with 11-2 Troy and 11-2 UTSA for the last spot just to get in.

Edit: Maybe I misunderstood your point -- apologies if so.

Officiating conferences for the bowls:

Apologies in advance to anyone who cares about a game reffed by the Big 10 hacks. There's maybe one good crew in the entire league. Also, they're not professionalized so I sympathize with them, and direct my hate to the Conference that doesn't give a shit about the quality of its product.

I would've codified that teams from the same conference can't compete in the semis. The playoffs are special because you get to see teams you don't see in-conference. I also probably would prevent 2 teams from the same conference qualify for the playoffs, but it's about $ and the committee would never do that.

That’s insane. That allows a team to have a cake walk through the playoff to a title? It’s clear the 3 best teams in the nation this year - 2 of them came from the same league

In the 12 team I’m okay with codifying same conference can’t meet in the first round etc. or maybe designated rivals can’t meet until a certain stage
