WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. and Justice Department prosecutors are investigating front-office officials for the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful teams in baseball over the past two decades, for hacking into the internal networks of a rival team to steal closely guarded information about player personnel.
Investigators have uncovered evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of the Houston Astros that housed special databases the team had built, according to law enforcement officials. Internal discussions about trades, proprietary statistics and scouting reports were compromised, the officials said.
The officials did not say which employees were the focus of the investigation or whether the team’s highest-ranking officials were aware of the hacking or authorized it. The investigation is being led by the F.B.I.’s Houston field office and has progressed to the point that subpoenas have been served on the Cardinals and Major League Baseball for electronic correspondence.

This sounds like a non-story. It's not like they filmed them from the wrong spot on the field or something.

The same Cardinals that we hear about every postseason that are the best franchise, with the greatest fans ever? Those Cardinals?

Per twitter: "the intrusion did not appear to be sophisticated".

Here
Let's see what kind of commish Manfred is. Does he go full Goodell, or does this turn into nothing from a league standpoint?

Didn't take long. Good god. Secretely hacking into a competitors business = filming defensive signals in front of 70,000 people who can see the same thing.

Stolen from twitter: The Cardinals IT department isn't the most talented, but it makes up for it with grit and proper hacking technique.

In fairness, most of the responses are saying it's much worse than Spygate.

The Cardinals fans are disliked by everyone else. The blowback should be interesting here.

The intrusion did not appear to be sophisticated, the law enforcement officials said.

Investigators believe Cardinals officials, concerned that Mr. Luhnow had taken their idea and proprietary baseball information to the Astros, examined a master list of passwords used by Mr. Luhnow and the other officials who had joined the Astros when they worked for the Cardinals. The Cardinals officials are believed to have used those passwords to gain access to the Astros’ network, law enforcement officials said.

Isn't this how Gilfoyle stole EndFrame's password?  You brainraped us, now I'm going to steal your login.

Can't wait for the release of the Cardinals internal e-mails showing Mozeliak and his staff laughing hysterically at Ben's insistence that Allen Craig *must* be in the Lackey deal.

I was waiting to hear the first person say that this is just like stealing signs, didn't have to wait long.

Of all the Cardinalish tweets I've gotten throughout the years, this is far and away the Cardinalest.
Jeff Passan added,

@JeffPassan as a lifelong Cardinals fan I look at this as nothing more than stealing signs. Astros plunk Carpenter and it's all over.

So Luhnow used the same passwords when changing organizations?

Will Leitch knows how this is going to work.

All right, now that the shock has worn off: May I go on record saying that if this is true, everyone involved should be thrown off the Arch.

All the success, all the hard work, and by being completely stupid, you've allowed everyone to question everything.

And you would deserve it.

It sounds like this is the same hack.  Which is interesting in that it points to the Cardinals as not only using this information for their own advantage, but using it to publicly embarrass the Astros.

There really isn't enough WTF for this. How can you be as smart as Luhnow appears to be, and yet too dumb to realize that bringing your old passwords over with you is a bad idea?
He took a bunch of people with him.  It wouldn't have to be Luhnow himself, could be any one of a bunch of his lackeys that went with him.  But, yes, the point stands.

Clearly this story is an attempt by non-believers to smear the only organization in sports that is guided by "Christ and Class" in everything they do.

According to the information presented thus far this is nothing more than a legal matter.
The patriots comparison will be used by those who are jealous of our club (mostly royals fans these days...sad) but it has nothing to do with performance on the field of play. "
