Yes, and they all were so unassuming. I lived just a few blocks away from Village Recording Studios for a couple of years in the '90s and had no idea it was there, much less its significance. What a mensch McDonald is.
I loved the fact that MM and Cross were interviewed together because it means they are still friends. All too often these relationships drift into acrimony so it was nice to see them there for each other.

They each lived through a magical era - its nice that they can compare notes etc

The amazing aspect of this little genre of music (it probably more accurately "Los Angeles Session Musician Pop" but that lacks the simplicity of "Yacht Rock") is how much cross (Cross?) pollination was going on. Toto was the bed, MM the accompanying vocals and Cross or Loggins were in the credits and everything was informed by the style of Becker and Fagan. It was a magical stew.
The Yacht Rock name was a silly joke for some sketches, and it worked too well. It's just hard to think of a name that would over ride that in public consciousness, but part of why it sticks is not just because the sketches were hilarious, but when you listened to the music again, it really was artfully made, sublimely smooth and enjoyable pop music.

And McDonald and Cross seem like great guys.

I would have already given it a great review, and then the Donald Fagen phone call took it up a few notches...
Am I the only one who felt like the Fagen phone call was staged?

It was funny, for sure. But it didn't seem very, let's say, organic.

The director talked about it on the Big Picture pod with Fennessey. It's apparently real, took a long time to set up, and the director accidentally hung up on him the first try. Both him and Fennessey (a producer on the doc) were positively giddy about the call, so that lends credence to it being real (plus, Fagan isn't exactly known as the kind of person that would play along with...anything).

This seems very on-brand for him.

That interview on The Big Picture is precisely why I think it was staged.

The whole thing sounded to me like Fagen wanted his only contribution - other than the wealth of Steely Dan tunes cleared for the doc - to be a terse (and profane) phone call. He had his manager get in touch with the producers of the doc about said phone call, along with instructions to, "be sure you're recording it," or something along those lines.

The phone call felt like Fagen trying to live up to his reputation as an ornery old cuss. If he was that upset about the whole "yacht rock" name, why would he clear so many of his act's compositions for the documentary?

I'm getting the sense that Simmons has been especially salty toward Lebron the last few weeks. While he's always been on Team MJ, he always was careful to express respect and admiration for Lebron, not only because Lebron deserves it, but also, I think, because Simmons understands Lebron would make for a powerful enemy if you want to have a long career as a leading voice in and around the NBA.

That said, in the last few weeks I've heard more commentary about how the Lakers are a joke, Lebron is holding them back, he's "one of the five worst defensive players in the league", he loves to lay on the floor playing hurt and takes forever to get up, and generally is putting himself first. Now all that may be true... but Bill used to pull that punch a little more.

I get the sense that Lebron turned him down for a project he'd been working on, or some other personal slight, for the heat to get ramped up.

This is a great point. Throw in the fact that Steely Dan's manager is Irving Azoff, who never does a deal for any reason other than it being lucrative for his clients and is the most protective and litigious name in the business.

That too, for sure.

FWIW, I'm totally open to being wrong on this. I don't know how I'd feel about the scene had I not listened to that episode of The Big Picture before watching the doc. In any event, I really enjoyed it!

IDK--if you look around the league a lot of people are saying those things about LeBron. A lot of the stats with him are grisly, especially some of the defensive numbers and people who closely watch the league have noticed it. Bill kicks extra hard when the Lakers are faltering (as he should, they are an evil organization) but I don't think his recent comments have been out of line with what a lot of people who cover the league have been saying.

Bill got fired from ESPN for jamming his thumb right into Goodell's eye and became way richer and more successful because of it. I don't think he is afraid to call someone out, even that person has a lot of power.

The reaction to the Carolina-Dallas line had me laughing out loud in my car. These guys still have it.

I want to preface this by saying I really enjoy the guess the lines pods with Sal. However, one minor thing that annoys me with Simmons is how he constantly changes how he announces the teams. Sometimes he’ll say the home team first, sometimes he’ll say the road team, and then sometimes he’ll just say the two team names (or cities) and you have no idea who is home. Here is how he phrased each matchup this week:

Chargers home for Denver Broncos
Chiefs Texans in KC
Ravens Steelers
Eagles Washington in Washington
Vikings at Seattle
Jags Raiders in Vegas
Bills Patriots
Lions Bears in Chicago
Jets home dog against Rams
49ers Dolphins in Miami
Falcons home for Giants
Colts Titans in Indianapolis
Cardinals at Panthers
Cleveland Cincinnati (Sal)
Bucs at Dallas
Packers Saints

Classic Bill Simmons. He spends over a decade blowing off MLB for the following issues, but hand waves the same issues with the NBA.

  • League is doing well financially but national interest isn't there
  • Not enough young American stars
  • The game is too cookie cutter
  • Regular season is too long
  • Too many silly gimmicks to recapture lost audience
  • Media talks more about ratings / league issues than the actual games

where the darn libs live
I really wish someone could go through every GTL pod this season and write down when Bill says "That's just wrong" or "That's stupid" about a line and then check to see how close the line actually was.

A Michael McDonald story that understandable wasn’t told in The Yacht Rock dock. Van Halen was recording the 1984 album and EVH came up with a second keyboard tune, “I’ll Wait “. Well, David Lee Roth could not come up with a vocal for the song so producer Ted Templeman decided to give a tape of the song to McDonald and he’s the one that came up with the bulk of the vocal lines that Roth sings. For years MM went uncredited but that has been rectified.

I skip most of Bill's NBA segments this time of year. I just can't devote much time in my life to thinking about the NBA in December/Janarury/February. It's all soooo meaningless.

Which I suppose is part of the NBA's problem.

I'm trying to imagine Michael McDonald singing "Ill Wait" and I can't do it. That's a good story, though.

Found this:

Although he swears the experience "wasn't exciting," it's still fun to imagine McDonald meeting up with David Lee Roth for the writing session that ultimately got "I'll Wait" into shape. "I met David Lee Roth at Ted’s office. That was, uh, an interesting experience," McDonald said with a chuckle. "He kinda liked what I had going, so we sat there in the office with the demo playing on a cassette recorder, singing lines and melodies."

The problem with the NBA right now is that it's more fun to talk about than actually watch. And it is a big problem.

If you're looking for a good time, read any thread on Russillo in r/BillSimmons, especially when they talk about his podcast coworkers going over to his house to hang out and evidently having a miserable time. It doesn't surprise me at all that he is attempting to defend himself with the old "I'm joking" canard.

I do feel bad enough for him that if he were around I'd buy him a friendship cake and some lululemon activity pants.

I loved the Bill Simmons NBA history review in his most recent podcast. Truly. That's the type of stuff I can't find many other places. In my opinion, it wasn't so much a referendum on the NBA being in a great place. It was more a - the league has been here before in a bad spot based on XYZ examples, but I feel like the league will find the way through it.

The problem is his recollection of some stiff is kind of fuzzy. The NBA went back to airing the Finals live in the 1982 Finals between the Lakers and the Sixers. The NBA pushed the start of the season later, which in turn pushed the start of the Finals after the end of the May sweeps. I get how important the 1984 Finals is to him, but the league had been running all the Finals games live two years before that first meeting between Bird and Magic.

Still nothing, so something’s gotta be up.

I’m surprised no word out of The Ringer about this. Most media events that have been postponed due to the fires (CBS pulling the Hollywood Squares premiere, Kimmel going to repeat, a bunch of TV series and movies suspending production, any number of movie premiere red carpets and junkets getting cancelled…) get it out to trade and social media for fan service and to remain relevant.

Other ringer staff have been posting that content is on hold because of the fires. I know Yasi doesnt have many fans here but she lost her home. Not sure who else has been directly impacted.

He tweeted out thanks to the firefighters and other people in the thick of it all, that's it. Guess he's just consumed with it. I have no idea where he lives but Brentwood is now under some threat.
Pretty sure he's in Hancock Park but as mentioned does have property in Malibu

If I had suddenly come into a quarter billion then I too would have property in Malibu.

It’s a mess out there, most of the friends I’ve checked in happen to have avoided the worst so far but everyone knows somehow who has lost essentially everything.

Hope for rain…

Game was always scheduled for Monday night.
OK, still, why would they do Guess the Lines before they know all the divisional round matchups? Anyway if it's just completely off, then yeah, that is troubling. Not that it should be a surprise that people are canceling ordinary business, even if they are essentially safe. Fingers crossed for them though.
