So, The Athletic started dropping their NHL99 List this week (named such because it is a Top 100 list but, well...you know). They will be posting one player per day, Monday through Saturday, until February.

I have only read #100, but if the rest are written as well, it will be a lot of fun.

I completely reject the premise of automatically giving Gretzky the one spot, but it's fun to read these stories, even if you disagree with the rankings

Carey Price came in at #88. He talked to Arpon Basu as part of that selection and went into more detail about his time in the player assistance program and the problems that caused it. I have family members that have struggled with alcoholism, so I respect to him for speaking honestly about his struggle and recovery.

Price was given the opportunity during our conversation to avoid this topic, to keep the details of his battle with alcohol private. But he wanted to talk about it because he knows how much good came from him simply announcing he was seeking help.

I just came across this list thanks to this link - fun read, thank you. Nice to see Mogilny recognized at #89 (coincidence?). He is my favorite player of all time and the reason I got into hockey in the early 90's. I am glad they discussed his ridiculous omission from the HOF. Looking forward to the rest of the list.

It was him for me too, along with Bourque, Mario, and Fedorov. I kind of liked the high numbers.
Mogilny should be higher but I understand the 89.

Too bad Orr didn't wear 1, then - with this pattern, he'll end up three places off.

Agreed. It's not as clear cut as many would make it out to be.

But yeah - hardly a surprise.

Yeah, I agree with you guys, despite me OP. I think The Athletic is, while generally well written, more for casual fan that the die hard, analytics based fan.
