Another year...another Easter...the Draft Contest rises again!

With @SMU_Sox's guidance, the contest has been streamlined: 1 point for each correctly-predicted draft pick or UDFA signed within 72 hours of the Mr. Irrelvant pick. $50 to the Jimmy Fund in the name of the contest winner. In the case of a tie, earlier (or earliest, if its a multi-way tie) entry wins.

Please go ahead and list 20 people you think will get to join the Pats at training camp! Re: those selections...

  • Lastname, Firstname format preferred - alphabetical order also preferred, though less important.
  • Position and school are helpful
  • Any thoughts on why the player would be a fit would be great to see!
Looking forward to my annual "I finished last for a good cause" slate of pics. Over to SMU's Big Board (post #174 in the 2022 Fits thread) for some ideas!

I’ll be releasing the Patriots Superlatives this week. Looking forward to seeing what you all think.

Good luck this year. I believe it is harder to predict defensive picks given they might be playing a 4-3 and more zone. Hard to know!

First couple names, will update with more as I think of them

1. Armour-Davis, Jaleyn DB Alabama vestaile Bama DB
2. Badie, Tyler Missouri RB third down receiving back option, I think they're going that way
3. Booker, Thomas DL and future GM, Stanford:versatile DL, maybe a better fit for a 4-3 DL, even a potential OL convert
4. Chanal, Leo LB Wisconisn
5. Coan, Jack QB Notre Dame athletically limited accruate tall passer, sounds like a good sixth round pick
6. Cook, James RB Georgia James White replacement
7. Ezeudu Joshua OG UNC
8. Farrell, Neil super fatty/DL LSU
9. Johnson, Zack OG BC prototype LG
10. Jones, Travis Big Fat Dude UConn
11. King, D'Eriq QB WR convert Miami looks like a promising Edelman type
12. Mathis, Phadarian DL Bama think we could use one
13. Metchie, John WR Hama
14. Phillips, Kyle Mini-Welker/WR, UCLA unlike Bolden an actually athletics slot prospect
15. Poe, Jason bowling ball/OL/FB mercer
16. Ray, Labryan DL Bama top prospect career derailed by injuries
17. Rhyan, Sean UCLA former surfer/rugbuy player/track and field/OL played LT in college most project as guard but that profile sounds like possibly an OT for the Pats and then possibly moving to OG?
18. Thomas, Cameron DE San Diego State
19. Williams, Kyren RB Notre Dame apparently an outstanding pass blocker so good third down option
20. Zackelj, Nick OL Fordham -- decent seeming late round OT Prospect

1 Davis, Jordan, DT, Georgia
Honestly, don't think he will be available at 21, but hope he is. Love the idea of pairing him with Barmore.
2 Hill, Daxton, S, Michigan
3 Johnson, Zion, OL, Boston College
4 Booth, Andrew, Jr., CB, Clemson
5 Elam, Kaiir, CB, Florida State
I expect them to trade back from 21 to later in the first, and these (2 through 5) are the players I would want them to target in that range.
6 Pitre, Jalen, S, Baylor
7 Ojabo, David, Edge, Michigan
8 Chenal, Leo, LB, Wisconsin
Edit
9 Pickens, George, WR, Georgia
9 Williams, Joshua, CB, Fayetteville State
10 Muma, Chad, LB, Wyoming
11 Ebiketie, Arnold, Edge, Penn State
12 Parham, Dylan, OL, Memphis
13 McCreary, Roger, CB, Auburn
14 Jones, Travis, DT, University of Connecticut
15 Thomas, Cameron, Edge, San Diego State
16 Rhyan, Sean, OL, UCLA
17 Metchie, John, WR, Alabama
18 Melton, Bo, WR, Rutgers
19 Araiza, Matt, P, San Diego State
20 Clark, Damone, LB, LSU

So many players I want to include in the list. Lots of linebackers, cornerbacks, tackles, safeties, wide receivers, but also running backs and tight ends.

Okay, I'll go. FWIW, BB and I rarely see eye-to-eye on this, so you may want to avoid the following:

50950

Bad jokes aside, I'm with @pappymojo - seems like an exciting draft for the Pats.

Thanks for all your hard work in evaluating the 280, @SMU_Sox!

If you click here I have their fits entered in. 5 = the perfect fit, 1 = oh hell no.
Did you move Brandon Smith from PSU down from #87? Been working on your previous table from the other thread, and in checking out your google sheet I noticed that he is down to #182. His spot in the draft seems especially variable as well...

I moved 2 guys and only 2 guys, Chasen Hines, and Brandon Smith. Smith was someone I truly loathed tape wise but the community I work with and the only outlet that discussed him, PFF IIRC, was vocal about why they thought he was a third rounder or around there. We debated him for a couple of days and I thought - well, I guess they are right - if he ever figured out what the hell he was doing he would be a good starter given his athletic profile and size. I also did his grade back in… February maybe? When I reviewed my board with the rest of the boards released closer to the draft I saw that some other analysts had him a lot lower.

The hard thing about draft analysis is not figuring out what a prospect can do well and doesn’t currently do well or do at all but the projection. With Smith I had trouble figuring out his projection. Where do you take a guy with that level of wretched tape but such incredible size, length, and athleticism? Am I nuts for having him as a later day 3 pick? That’s what was going on in my head when it came to his original grade and why I moved him down the board.

Chasen Hines was just a typo. I was going from my google doc reports to my excel sheet and I just wrote the draft grade wrong. That happens - I was in a rush to get my board to Arif Hassan because he has a deadline for his CBB project. I noticed the mistake doing the Scho Show Listener mock draft (32 teams 7 rounds. 15/16 of us making the picks). I was looking for an OL for the 49ers and noticed his grade was off.

Smith is the only guy I moved significantly. It was just a case of all the people I talked to about it + one major media outlet arguing that Smith‘s projection should be “high” and I am thinking about it, for lack of better words, wrong (again this is in late January or early February).

Let’s talk about Smith:
50964

He's not just a freak, he is one of the freakiest ILBs we've ever seen. The dude isn't just big and fast and explosive and twitchy but he has better arm length than most offensive tackles at 34 and 5/8ths inches! And this shows up on tape. He flies around. The issues with him are his processing is slow/non-existent, 180 pound wide receivers actually blocked him out of the club multiple times, he takes bad angles, he falls for fakes, and his stack/shed is miserably bad. His coverage is ok. He has the movement skills to cover people in man. He can be late though to rally and anticipate routes in zone.

You'll also see him make some highlight plays where he puts it all together and plays like a star. The issue is those plays show up maybe once a game and the bad plays show up, unfortunately, much more frequently.

ILB is a position where mental traits are so critical and he just doesn't have them. I wish I had pushed back earlier on him. I don't always trust my own judgment and I believe in the power of discussing a person and talking it out. 99% of the time we (Scho Show draft community) end up in a spot I feel comfortable in and one that I think puts me in a place of better understanding. Sorry for the long winded answer but there was a lot to Smith as he was someone we debated... a lot.

Wow. Highlights just how much thought can go into a projection - especially if there is conflicting data. I imagine some team will take the plunge on him earlier than you project due to his scores, or perhaps thinking they can coach him into being a strong contributor. Thanks for the insight!

Two Strongs and two Johnsons would make for a compelling draft narrative. This year is indeed really exciting, particularly after a successful draft last year. I’m definitely worried (an overstatement) the Patriots will build for the depth and miss on impact guys.

"Flags fly forever..." Personally, though I root for the Pats, I am the Detroit Lions of the draft contest - a participant since the earliest days, but "the only franchise operational for the entirety of the Super Bowl era to not appear in the Super Bowl."

See you next Tuesday!

1. Bailey Zappe, QB - WKU (Stidham replacement)
2. Kennedy Brooks, RB - OU (very productive Oklahoma back)
3. Alec Pierce, WR - Cincinnati (versatile, athletic WR)
4. Bo Melton, WR - Rutgers (versatile, athletic WR)
5. Jake Ferguson, TE - Wisconsin (could develop into a Y)
6. Marquis Hayes, IOL - OU (plug & play from a program they like)
7. Ed Ingram, IOL- LSU (plug & play from SEC)
8. Matt Waletzko, OT - North Dakota (project with upside)
9.Vederian Lowe, OT - Illinois (Project with upside coached by Bielema)
10. Trevor Penning, OT - Northern Iowa (Seems like a Scar guy)
11.Neil Farrell Jr. DT - LSU (Run stuffer with upside from SEC)
12. Otito Ogbonnia, DT - UCLA (Run stuffer with upside coached by Chip Kelly)
13. Cameron Thomas, DE - San Diego (Has some size and juice off the edge)
14. Sam Williams, DE - Ole Miss (If you put Perkins & Uche in a blender; has character concerns)
15. Channing Tindall, LB - Georgia (Plays with more urgency than Quay Walker, undervalued)
16. Josh Jobe, CB - Alabama (My Guy. 2nd rounder based off 2020; played with turf toe in 2021 and limited him)
17. Tariq Castro-Fields, CB - Penn St (H/W/S guy; experienced)
18. Jaylen Watson, CB - Washington St (H/W/S guy, inexperienced but the talent is there)
19. Yusuf Corker, S - Kentucky (Tough, high football IQ ST type)
20. Velus Jones Jr, WR/RS/ST (Explosive returner with some receiving upside)

OK. Let's go with these 20. Just based on what I have heard predicted for the Patriots, and on mismatches between perceived grades and predicted draft positions. Edit: and a punter if he is available as Bailey had an atypical down year last year, and is a bit more expensive this year than perhaps might be advisable. Plus, I added Smoke Monday and Velus Jones - just because.

Anyway, I am terrible at this game, but it's fun to play regardless of level of skill.

Huge thank you to @Super Nomario for working on short notice for a longer piece.

We're going to break up the draft guide this year because it is the longest form I have done yet.

Here are my offensive fits for 2022.

This guide, the defensive guide, and the big board + horizontal board (I will try and make sure I link reports) represents about 600-700 hours of work this year. Seeing it go from a list of prospects, to long reports, to making the board and then summarizing these guys with short descriptions is pretty satisfying. I honestly am just ready for the draft to get here.

What do you make of JAX potentially taking Walker over Hutchinson (Walker is now the betting favorite to go first overall)?

51120

This is why he's going high. He looks like Myles Garrett. He is an excellent run defender. Very good with twists and stunts.

With Walker you have a once every 5-10 years kind of physical and athletic profile. Unfortunately that's where the comparisons end. Walker is underdeveloped as a pass rusher. UGA's scheme didn't help him as he didn't get the opportunity to rush 1:1 very often and when he did he showed a lack of moves and counters. If you're taking him you have to have a plan in place with him and his agent for working in the off-season with specialists to develop there.

Hutchinson doesn't have the arm length or bend you like to see with traditional edges. Sure his 3-cone was great but that's not the same kind of movement for an edge as bending is. 3-cone is useful for corners, receivers, off-ball backers, safeties, running backs, tight ends, offensive linemen etc. but not a great drill to capture the kind of movement you have to have to bend the corner for DT or edge. It's a decent proxy but not perfect. I don't think it really matters. Hutch is going to be a quality starter who is good/great against the run and the pass - he could even be a pro-bowler. He has such a good pass rush plan with lots of moves and counters he readily deploys.

51121

If it were me I would take Hutchinson. If Walker had shown me anything more solid and projectable as a pass rusher it would be close and I might even give him the benefit of the doubt but it isn't. I don't hate Walker at 1,1 because this isn't a year with a clear top 5 let alone a clear 1,1.

Defensive fits are up. I don’t mention some of the average fits like Wyatt, DT, UGA in there. I’m not sure he’s more than a one gap penetrator and I question his run defense. They took Barmore and he had some questions about that so I might be being too hard on him. I’m still figuring out what they like at IDL. They love size (minus Easley) and Wyatt at 304 is probably big enough for them. Can he hold up at the POA well enough for them? I don’t think so but I’m wrong a lot.

I'm going with guys I want them to take who I think fit their profile.

I am going to use my descriptions from the best fits column. I don't know what they do at corner so just going to pass on listing them this year.

1. Travis Jones, IDL, UCONN. Jones reminds me a lot of a lighter Vince Wilfork. He’s a freak in his own right: 6’4”, 325 pounds with 34.25 inch arms and a 9.40 RAS. He has the best anchor in the class and both soak ups double teams and blows them up. He is the best run-defending tackle in the class and is scheme-diverse. He might never be a great pass rusher but shouldn’t be a slouch there, with good explosiveness and power and a nifty swim move. Unlike Davis he has great stamina and plays the whole game. Jones has the highest floor of any defensive tackle in the class, and a borderline Pro Bowl ceiling. He should start right away.

2. Quay Walker, ILB, UGA. Has all the physical tools and athleticism of both a modern and thumper linebacker. He has good size (6’3”, 241), a frame that can add more weight, and elite athleticism (9.63 RAS). Walker has some processing issues and needs to be more consistent taking on offensive linemen. He needs more playing time but has Pro Bowl physical traits. Processing doesn’t always significantly improve, so there is risk with Walker with his potential reward.

3. Leo Chenal, ILB/Edge, Wisconsin. One of my favorite players in the draft and a prototype Patriot. Chenal is a sprint to the podium first round pick if not for his coverage. Even though he has every physical component of the athleticism to play in coverage (9.99 RAS, 4th best of all time at linebacker since 1987), he needs critical technical development and reps there to be even below average. His run defense, versatility, and pass rush are what makes him a unicorn. Chenal can play either the Kyle Van Noy role or the Hightower role on the Patriots defense. He is the best run defender and pass rusher in the class. He can play as an edge or even as an interior rusher or run defender. Chenal closed out the game for the Badgers vs Iowa as he defeated highly-touted prospect Tyler Linderbaum one-on-one as a run defender to make a TFL on 4th down playing as a defensive lineman.

4. Zion Johnson, OG/OT, BC. Zion is one of the top Patriots prototypes in the entire draft. Like Raimann, he is new to football, having just started playing offensive line in college. While he played left tackle in 2020, he switched to left guard in 2021 and was dominant. He is the most technically advanced offensive lineman in the draft, with good power and exceptional athleticism (9.75 RAS as an OG and 9.47 as an OT). Johnson is also one of the most intelligent OL in the class. Johnson is short for offensive tackle but has good arm length (34”), athleticism, and weight to play the position.

5. Sean Rhyan, OG, UCLA. My favorite late day 2 or early day 3 pick for New England at IOL. Rhyan started at left tackle and is a mauler who plays with a hot motor from start to finish. Rhyan doesn’t have the length to play tackle in the NFL. His footwork can get sloppy but he has fantastic athleticism (9.33 RAS) and his anchor improved so much in 2021 that it is now above average. Rhyan has to clean up his footwork and aggressiveness in pass protection, but he has the athleticism, raw power, and tenacity to be a starting guard for a long time.

6. Devin Lloyd, Utah, ILB. He is incredibly versatile and can cover and pass rush at a very good level. His run defense is hit or miss. He is more of a finesse player and lineman can push him around. He takes good angles and he reads plays well. He is good at backside pursuit. He has work to do as a tackler. He isn’t a Patriots fit in their current scheme because he isn’t physical enough but he would be great on a team that likes their linebackers to run and chase and play zone coverage.

7. Kyle Philips, WR, UCLA. My favorite slot receiver fit for them on day 3. Philips needs to tone down the dancing in his routes, but when he does he has a plethora of ways to generate separation during his route and is fantastic with the ball in his hands. He is also one of the best punt returners in the entire class. He’s a fiery player and a good blocker. He reminds me stylistically of a cross between Wes Welker and Julian Edelman (I am not saying he will ever be that good).

8. Josh Paschal, Edge/IDL, Kentucky. Another prototypical Patriot but fits best in a 4-3 scheme. Paschal is a multiple year team captain, has a high motor, and is an excellent run defender. He is a classic power edge/IDL who needs to use his bull rush more as it is excellent. He also needs to get better with his hands as a pass rusher. He excels on twists and stunts. He can also play all over the defensive line. His high level outcome is Trey Flowers.

9. Alec Pierce, WR, Cincinnati. Has their prototypical size (6’3”, 211 pounds with 33” arms), speed (4.41 40), and athleticism (9.82 RAS). He is also an outstanding gunner and run blocker. Pierce is an X-only prospect and vertical threat with some of the best ball tracking and catching in the class. He has an enormous catch radius and world-class body control. However, he is stiff in the hips, has below average RAC, needs to improve his route running, and needs to expand his repertoire of releases vs press.

10. George Pickens, WR, UGA. He has the size and speed they like and was excellent when healthy as an X. He needs to work on polishing his route running and setting up separation better, but his catch radius, body control, and run after catch are all excellent traits. He’s another strong blocker who attacks corners. He reminds me stylistically of a cross between AJ Green and newly acquired Patriot DeVante Parker. He might not ever get to that level, but he has the potential to. Character issues though - is he a culture fit?

11. Marquis Hayes, OL, Oklahoma. Limited with his short area change of direction and ability to block in space, but he has good length and hands in pass protection and perhaps the best gap control in the class. He is as smart as they come but has athletic limitations.

12. Darrian Beavers, ILB, Cincinnati. A high-cut hybrid ILB/OLB. Like Chenal he plays on the edge or as an off-ball linebacker. Beavers lacks short area quickness and that shows up as a tackler. He is a good processor and in his zone drops. He isn’t as athletic on tape as he tested (9.60 RAS) but he should perform like an above-average to average athlete. Beavers is smart, tough, and versatile and can play the Hightower role on the defense. He took on and shed offensive linemen and has the power and physicality they like.

13. Micah McFadden, ILB, Indiana. A quality special teamer, a downhill thumper, and he can stack and shed offensive linemen. He didn’t play as fast as his testing would indicate (9.46 RAS) and he has processing issues.

14. DeAngelo Malone, Edge, Western Kentucky. Reminds me of Van Noy. He is a 3-4 standup linebacker and not a good fit in a 4-3 unless he is a designated pass rusher. He needs to add core strength against the run but will extend his arms and set the edge. He showed off his range and fluidity as an ILB and in coverage. He has a variety of pass rush moves but his speed-to-power is deadly already and he performs at a high level on twists and stunts. As an ILB blitzer, his burst downhill is excellent.

15. Arnold Ebiketie, EDGE, Penn State. Another high-motor edge who is scheme-versatile. He might be best as an attacking 4-3 9-tech but has flashed the ability to uncork into offensive tackles and set the edge. As a pass rusher, he has a diverse set of initial moves but needs to add more counters. He has good length (34.125” arms) and athleticism (8.91 RAS) with great burst and bend. He should be a quality pass rusher and if he can improve his technique and add some core strength as a run defender he could be an even better Kyle Van Noy. He is better in a penetrating scheme but could be scheme-diverse.

16. Zonovan Knight, RB, NC State. A good route runner and catches the ball well. He has some technique and awareness issues in pass pro but has the size and fire to eventually be acceptable there.

17. Ty Chandler, RB, Tennessee. A speedy back who can return kicks and is also a plus route runner and receiver. His pass pro is above average and he would fit in well as a natural gap runner as well as a 3rd down back.

18. Spencer Burford, OT, UTSA. Smart, tough, and has good functional athleticism. Needs technique work all around but has the movement and athletic traits and toughness they like.

19. Matt Waletzko, OL, North Dakota. Super athletic but needs technique development and core strength improvements. Traits guy who needs a year.

20. Cade Mays, OL, Tennessee. Started at every position on the offensive line during his four years at Tennessee and Georgia. He is the physical opposite of Tom as he is tall, long, and strong. He is a mauler as an interior blocker. He struggled with speed and speed to power at right tackle in college and he needs to improve his ability to anchor quickly. He has a strong grip and good use of hands in pass protection and projects best as a guard in a gap/power or downhill rushing scheme. He is a good athlete, 7.56 RAS, and has the agility testing they like on the inside.

HM - guys I had here and dropped before the big day: Damone Clark, Jordan Davis, and Braxton Jones.

Honestly, don't think he will be available at 21, but hope he is. Love the idea of pairing him with Barmore.
2 Hill, Daxton, S, Michigan
3 Johnson, Zion, OL, Boston College

4 Booth, Andrew, Jr., CB, Clemson
5 Elam, Kaiir, CB, Florida State
I expect them to trade back from 21 to later in the first, and these (2 through 5) are the players I would want them to target in that range.
6 Pitre, Jalen, S, Baylor
7 Ojabo, David, Edge, Michigan
8 Chenal, Leo, LB, Wisconsin
Edit
9 Pickens, George, WR, Georgia
9 Williams, Joshua, CB, Fayetteville State
10 Muma, Chad, LB, Wyoming
11 Ebiketie, Arnold, Edge, Penn State
12 Parham, Dylan, OL, Memphis
13 McCreary, Roger, CB, Auburn
14 Jones, Travis, DT, University of Connecticut
15 Thomas, Cameron, Edge, San Diego State
16 Rhyan, Sean, OL, UCLA
17 Metchie, John, WR, Alabama
18 Melton, Bo, WR, Rutgers
19 Araiza, Matt, P, San Diego State
20 Clark, Damone, LB, LSU

So many players I want to include in the list. Lots of linebackers, cornerbacks, tackles, safeties, wide receivers, but also running backs and tight ends.

Those that are veterans at this endeavor...

Is this year the lowest success rate for the entire thread? Or is this about average for trying to guess at BB drafts? A quick skim and I'm only seeing one list with 2 names on it, and if I'm not mistaken only 3 maybe 4 names correct for the thread?

No negativity here, just curious what the range for positive lists is after the 7th, prior to UDFA.

Pitched a no-hitter. I got skillz.
