I think it might be Chang. Reyes plays both 2B and SS as competently as Chang plus can play the outfield, which probably makes him Bloom's preference even without last night's heroics.

Chang has also played quite a few games at 1B in his career. Last night makes it tough but I keep the superior defensive shortstop Chang.

They seemed to go with Chang a lot more than Reyes when those were the only options, and as the better fielder, Chang has more value as a defensive replacement. Seems like an easy choice.

Yep. Despite the amazing Reyes game last night, Chang is a better fit for the team when Story is playing SS. If they had dealt someone like Duvall for pitching at the deadline, then Reyes would stay I’m sure. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Reyes (.774 OPS in 77 AB) has out hit Chang (.552 OPS in 105 AB, 4 BB and 34 K) and should stay IMO. Neither has hit well over their their careers, but Reyes has still been a bit better and better over the past couple seasons. Chang has a .654 OPS in 650 career PA (.636 in 553 PA since 2021), while Reyes is at .689 in 371 PA (.719 in 188 PA since 2021).

Both have been solid defensively but Reyes has shown life at the plate and Chang hasn't. I think the player who produces in his opportunity should get the job, it's better for the team in the short term and sends the right message to the players.

While I think Chang is the better defender at SS, if Story's every-other-game run is only for a week, Reyes (who also has some IF flexibility), starting at SS for 3 or 4 games is probably the better choice. I assume that, like Arroyo, either one would go unclaimed if DFA'd, and potentially can be stashed in Wistah.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with most of what's posted, but every move being made doesn't have to involve sending a message to someone.

Has there ever been a team that went/will go through more combined Middle Infielders in history than the Sox this year? It's crazy... and doesn't even include Mondesi (who again, was expected back in mid May... so I get why Kiké was starting at SS there). When it became obvious that Mondesi was much farther off is when that hole became a light-consuming intense collapsing shit-show.

Story's not going to play everyday even after the every-other-day run. So we need a backup SS/2B, even if the plan is to play Story at SS and Urias at 2B in 90% of the remaining games.

The only two guys who can do that on the current 26 man roster are Chang and Reyes. In the minors we have catastrophic 40-man backups with: Hamilton, Valdez, Rafaela. (Plus Dalbec for corner IF, and Mondesi on the 60-day.)

If Cora is looking at this like "strict days off rotation favoring defense" Chang's his guy.

If Cora's looking at this like "we'll mix and match the backup in favorably, and the starters will get their rest as it happens" Reyes is the guy.

So I'm guessing Reyes gets DFA'd.

Two other factors: I'm not sure how the DFA rules work here, but they might try to slip the less tempting player to AAA. I'm also not sure how they view the defensive SS mix with returning pitchers, low-pitch counts, etc. Perhaps Chang has more value in that situation?

The only message would be to the players on the roster and in the minors that if you perform when you get the chance with this organization, you won't lose your job to someone similar who played worse when they had the chance. Production counts.

Not that it means anything, but in his 4 games with the Sox he has a 98 ops+, pretty close to his career average of 97 over 417 games, and over the last 2 seasons he put up a 112 and a 109 in a combined 269 games. It seems safe to say he's around a league average hitter when healthy, much better than either of the other 2.

Not good to be shorthanded like this-- Story is only supposed to play alternating games, and Turner is on the roster but can't play for a few more games at least.
Also from the article, Whitlock starts for Worcester this afternoon.

The righthander, out since July 3 with an elbow injury, is expected to work 2-3 innings in preparation of joining the Red Sox over the weekend in a relief role.

Terri Nunn. 1st album back cover had her listed doing vocals and bj's. Drank with the band once but didn't get to talk with her much....just "Oh, you're Benji's friend? Cool" (Yeah)

I was a huge Linda R. fan too back in the day.

Certainly his worst season in terms of time spent on the IL. He was last on the IL at the start of 2021 (missed the first two weeks). He missed about half of 2020 with injuries as well (COVID year so only about five weeks). That's it prior to this year.
