96 innings, $10M, 1.1 fWAR. Meh.

Understand why they didn’t, but unfortunate they didn’t deal him at the deadline. No way they offer a QO now.

Probably right about the QO, but another way of looking at this is that from the time he was activated, May 12th, through August 10th, Paxton threw 80.1 innings and was worth 1.6 fWAR. That’s quite good—about the same fWAR as Bobby Miller, Tyler Glasnow, Jordan Montgomery and Sandy Alcantara over that window.

That window is arguably arbitrary—his bad last month definitely counts—but it seems strongly correlated with his true talent level when healthy. And pretty good considering he’s had three years away from competitive games. With normal rest, health, and a proper spring, is he capable of, say, 130 innings of that next year? Because that guy is probably worth close to QO money.

$4M.

19 starts, 8 quality starts. He basically hit a wall in the beginning of August after not pitching a full season since 2019. Hardly a shocker.

But before those last 3 games, his ERA was 3.34.
