So the G League allows a direct from HS player to play in it, but the NBA doesn't? What kind of bullshit is this?

https://sports.yahoo.com/projected-top-10-draft-pick-make-leap-high-school-g-league-193725979.html

The rule that stopped American HS players from going directly to the NBA is racist and unfair. The NBAPA and the owners sold out the young men who work and dream to become the future of that league. If an NBA affiliated league can have HSers in it, the big show can too.
This is in the 2019 Draft thread.

Projected top five in the draft, in various orders:

7'0" Deandre Ayton
6'11" Marvin Bagley
6'10" Michael Porter
7'0" Mohamed Bamba
6'8" Luke Doncic

Let's say the Celtics somehow manage to have things fall right and get a top-5 pick. Which of these five guys would be the best fit for Boston? Who would you guys want to pick out of this group (it would almost certainly be one of them)?

Current draft slots of interest to the Celtics
Nets likely to be #6-8 (for hand-wringing interest)
Kings likely #6-8 (for next year's interest)
Lakers #10 or 11 (2.9% chance at 2/3 at #10; 2.1% chance at #11)
Celtics #27 or 28 (of course #1 seed would be worth the drop of the slot here)

With the relative strength of this year's draft over next year's, one would probably prefer the pre-lottery Nets' position now to the 2019 Kings' pick. However, if the Nets drop a slot or two then maybe the Kings pick would look comparatively better especially if "1 and done" is done. I am still hoping for that 2.9% chance to come through.

I'd take Doncic and wouldn't think twice about it.

Don't care much about fit, at the top of the draft I think you have to take who you think is the best shot to be a star, not who best fills a hole on your current roster. Doncic is it for me.

Bagley, Porter, and Doncic will all be stars. Bamba will be more of a specialist, like a DJ Jordan, but is total athletic freak. I'm not sold on Ayton from the little I've seen of him.

Maybe. But Ayton was a first team All American and posted sick numbers as a freshman. Huge and athletic. I'm imagining him with Kyrie, Brown, Hayward, and Tatum. Holy smokes. Though any of them would be great to have.

I was just looking at the players expected to be available in the late first where the C's pick. A lot of them look pretty interesting that I could see Ainge taking. This is a deep draft.

Grayson Allen - how soon we forget how highly recruited he was, that he had an incredible college career. He put up strong to elite shooting numbers, is a great athlete and had a great steals rate. He is the most Aingiest of the draftees and will get under the skin of opponents, and have a huge target on his back.

Jontay Porter - at one point 10th ranked in his class. He reclassified, so he is actually almost 2 years younger than his brother Michael. Considering how young he is for his class, he put up some impressive numbers at Mizzou. And, he has to have a brain on him to essentially skip a year of school.

Trevon Duval - This fits Ainge's profile in so many ways. Danny loves his super-athletic, highly recruited point guards (different scouting services ranked him between #3 to #5 overall in his class), who's ranking dropped after a subpar one-and-done in college.

Mitchell Robinson - a total enigma and potential character issue who lost a year. But, was ranked #6 in his class heading into college. Has really impressive physical attributes (7'4 wingspan, true 7-footer).

He's also a singe position player that will struggle defensively at the next level due to lack of size and length. If by Aingiest you mean "reminds me of a young Danny" maybe, but he's not a very Stevensy player. So I doubt that Boston drafts him as a depth player (unless he has some point guard skills that I've never seen).

I wish. But he'll be long gone by the end of the first round.

Trevon Duval - This fits Ainge's profile in so many ways. Danny loves his super-athletic, highly recruited point guards (different scouting services ranked him between #3 to #5 overall in his class), who's ranking dropped after a subpar one-and-done in college.
This is more of a possibility as a long-term Rozier replacement. Of course all this depends on what happens to Rozier on draft night. The Clippers or Suns could well make an offer on Rozier (they each have multiple mid firsts) and then the calculus changes a little.

If the early pick is someone like Zhaire Smith or Shai G-A then they'll be looking for more wing depth or, even more ideally, a draft & stash guy like Isaac Bonga. If it was one of the Bridges or maybe even Kevin Knox, then that would make a guard more appealing at 26-28.

What's the "early pick" you're referring to here?

I pointed out that if they were to deal Rozier on draft night to one of the two teams with two mid first round picks it would change the second one. I mean it’s right there at the start of the section where I addressed the possibility of Boston drafting Duval.

Tonight’s roster aside I don’t see Boston using a first round pick on another backup PG unless they were trading Rozier now to get value for him before free agency (because they aren’t going to pay him market rate to back up Irving). But even if they were to deal Rozier to the Clippers or Suns, I think there would be better options at the PG spot.

What, I’m supposed to read an entire post before commenting on it now or something? Maybe that’s how they do things in Russia, but here in the good old US of A, I fly off half-cocked at the mere mention of Zhaire Smith.

I'm sure we'll come up with similar flying under the radar types as we have in the past. I know we had Siakam and think it was you that we shared Dejounte and Gobert.

One of my early guys is Troy Brown out of Oregon. One part Dejounte, another part Wade Baldwin with his insane length, a little Shaun Livingston court vision, and a body to still grow into.

I'm having trouble locating a website that I used extensively last season leading up to the draft. I don't know if someone here linked me to it originally, but I'm hoping one of you can help me.

It was basically a database of NBA mock drafts, but it wasn't your ordinary mock draft database. It was really slick. It included all of the popular mock sources; all picks for at least the first round, maybe more; and it went back several years. It also had this feature where, if you mouse over a player's name in one mock draft column, it would highlight that same player's location in all of the other mock draft columns next to it, giving you a good feel for where that player stood in the draft and what his standard deviation was. I believe it might have had some system for grading the historical accuracy of the different mock sources as well.

Now that I've seen that site, all of these other ones coming up in my search just aren't cutting it.

You missed out JJJ who is tier 2 behind Doncic for me.
Trae Young is also tier 2 for me.
And I might have Carter over Porter and Bagley (definitely Bagley).

Wait, Carter over Bagley? Why? Isn't Carter kind of an anachronism? Didn't see a ton of these guys, but Bagley was pretty impressive.

Carter isn't an anachronism (unless Horford is). He may not be the athlete that Bagley is, and I definitely wouldn't take him over Bagley, but he's going to have a 15 year career as a starting center barring injury.

Carter apparently isn't 100% gone from Duke - his mom wants him to return. Still seems 95% but it's not a done deal

I could live with this scenario playing out. If the Cs get lucky and Ayton odds off the board, who is your preferred target?

I love Doncic, but I think trading down or a blockbuster becomes very likely if the pick conveys this year.

Next year, you’re looking at a starting 5 of:

Horford
Tatum
Hayward
Brown
Irving

The only 2 guys worth trading a hypothetical #2 pick for would be Davis or Leonard. And Davis isn’t getting traded this year so you’re left with Kawhi, a guy who just quit on his team and who has injury concerns. I’d investigate but there is considerable risk and cost concerns with trading for Kawhi.

I think if the 4% chance of a 2/3 pick actually materializes, Ainge would take and keep the pick. Doncic would be my guy. He could contribute off the bench right away and be a huge trade chip should Davis ever become available.

Personally I’m a Doncic guy and if they get #2 or 3 I think you take Doncic and let him backup the wings. Brown/Hayward/Tatum are so versatile he can backup all of them. And after next year a Marcus Morris replacement will be needed. Would be good to have in hours options.

Yeah, you keep that pick if it materializes. We already have an all star cast. Continue stocking up on our future and extend the window.

I can see the rationale in taking Doncic but part of me still wants Ayton. Imagine that team with a monster in the middle,

By the way, who is the worst player in that starting 5? Tatum...I guess? And who knows how that outlook changes over the offseason. That’s just filthy.

Brown is the worst player in that starting 5. Though I think that's more the closing 5 than starting, might slide Jaylen or Tatum to the bench to lead the 2nd unit scoring. Start Baynes or Theis.

Weren’t both Brown and Tatum starting in the first game? I don’t see why you move one to the bench in favor of a far inferior player. The bench would still have plenty of offense with Rozier, Morris, and maybe Smart.

I think the idea would be to get that guy more looks as he's the 4th/5th option with the starters and let Horford play more F to ease up on his body (also the rebounding might be a concern).

I know it's posted multiple times, but for us drive-by draft followers ... if the Lakers ping pong balls don't wind up in the 2 or 3 slot, the pick goes to Philly, right? And what do the Celtics wind up with?

Technically, we end up with the better of the SAC and PHI first-rounders next year (unless one is #1, in which case we get the other), but if that distinction ends up mattering (i.e., Philly gets a better pick than Sacramento), I'll eat my hat.

And yes you're correct on the rest.

I could certainly see the value. Basically what Pop did with Ginobili all those years. I also think that Horford would see the greatest reduction in shots and would mostly be a facilitator with that loaded starting 5. At his age, wouldn’t be the worst thing either.

I found what I was looking for, but my memory was a bit off. It's actually a collection / grading of draft models; not mock drafts. Replying here in case anyone is interested because this site is pretty cool.

That is pretty cool. I remember seeing it once before (maybe through a link on this site). I just wish there were some way of pulling the rankings for a particular player that are off screen (too low or too high) onto the screen (I imagine that would be a programming challenge). But, still: very impressive.

Mo Bamba measured 7-10 wingspan at Combine today! I expect him to do well on the lane agility drills too. Love this kid as a Capela +.

1.Mo Bamba (7'10)
2. Udoka Azubuike (7'7)
3. Jaren Jackson (7'5.25)
T-4. Isaac Haas / Austin Wiley (7'5)
6. Ray Spalding (7'4.75)
7. Wendell Carter (7'4.5)
8. Bruno Fernando (7'4.25)
9. Kevin Hervey (7'3.5)
10. Keita Bates-Diop (7'3.25)

Chandler Hutchison, the 6-7 swingman from Boise State, and Mitchell Robinson, the 7-footer who left Western Kentucky have pulled out of the combine. Both are rumored to have promises.

Makes a ton of sense for a Robinson believer to make him a promise and for him to accept. He's been sight unseen so nobody is going to jump in without having seen/met with him and he's protected against bad workouts.

Yes. He's protected not only against bad workouts but also from the character and effort issues that have dogged him ever since the tryouts for the U-19 team, where Robinson thought he should have been a lock to make the team without having to practice very hard, but Calipari thought otherwise.
