Really happy for Reed. He gets a lot of irrational crap from golf fans. He was clearly feeling the pressure today but he really ground his way through that round and did enough to win. Showed a lot of mental toughness, it was impressive.

I hope he mouths off in an interview this evening. That'll make this even more fun.

Hard to hold it together with Jordan playing like that in front of him. Seve couldn’t do it with Jack, Norman couldn’t do it with Faldo. Impressive.

I haven't said it during the round because it was clearly an uphill battle, but I'm still shocked at the vitriol for Reed. I mean I get overall why people don't like him, but what he did in Hazeltine changed everything for me. The guy is absolute nails and doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks about him. He relishes the hate too, which I love.

He's the Brad Marchand of golf.

Rickie 65-67 weekend. That’s friggin strong.
Seriously. Imagine what it feels like to do that at Augusta and not win? Was pulling for Rickie but definitely happy for Reed....he is certainly a deserving champion after holding off that onslaught today. That was a phenomenal Sunday.

The 2 putt on 17 was key, and lucky. Could have been off the green. That’s the kind of breaks you need to win. Margin is that small.

After 72 holes it is pretty incredible one bounce off the pin can be easily pointed to as a moment that allowed him to finish the tournament in the lead.

Guy got it done, congrats to him.

Yeah well deserved.

Have they started lengthening 13 yet?
They're not going to ... tell you about it

What a great tournament. Rahm was about a foot from having a great look at Eagle. Speith on fire and Knicks a branch. Fun Sunday. Good for Reed. Wouldn’t shock me to see him win some more. He’s got such a beautiful tempo on his shots that really helps when tension starts building.

According to AP story tonight:

Reed is old school among his generation, with a brash attitude and a willingness to speak his mind. He has never been terribly popular in this state, mainly because of allegations of bad behavior while playing for Georgia that led to an early departure from the Bulldogs. He transferred to Augusta State and led the outmanned Jaguars to a pair of NCAA titles. His parents live in Augusta but were not at the tournament. They weren't at his wedding in 2012, a relationship Reed chooses not to discuss.

Just finished watching on delay after surprisingly avoiding any spoilers all day. I’m not a Spieth fan, but that was an unbelievable round. After his birdie on 8, I said to my wife “he’s winning this.”

And I cant explain my dislike of Spieth. I found myself routing for Reed even though I don’t like him in the Ryder Cup. But damn - they played amazing golf today (in two different ways).

CBS comments - Nobilo, Dottie, and Kostis just aren’t good doing the hole coverage. I really like Dottie when she’s on the course. And Kostis is fine with his swing analysis - but that is nixed at the Masters. To have them doing exciting and tournament-defining holes like 13 and 15 takes away some of that significance.

Anyway - reading through all the posts after the fact was still great.

Wait, you don't like Reed in the Ryder Cup? Are you British? Because he's basically everything good about the American team.

I read up on Reed a bit more. He comes across as a very weird guy. He doesn't talk to his immediate family and didn't even have them there at his wedding. His parents got tickets to the US Open a couple years ago and his wife had the cops escort them off the course and take away their credentials. His wife says his parents verbally and physically abused Reed as a kid which they deny. He was kicked off UGA's golf team after being accused of stealing from teammates and also was also accused of cheating during competition. He transferred to Augusta State and nobody liked him there either as he was almost voted off the team despite leading them to 2 national titles.

I like his fiery nature in the Ryder Cup setting because he does well. But after learning more about him, I can't bring myself to root for him outside of that.

Hah! A wannabe maybe...I lived there for a year. It’s probably more what the event has become rather than him individually. I’ve never really liked the over-the-top nationalism that comes up in the Ryder Cup.

Saying that - he was awesome and fun to watch at Hazeltine. Rory too.

We had some discussion about this earlier in the thread. And yeah, Reed is a difficult player to root for.

I will say that there is not a lot of ambiguity in terms of Reed's family issues. One of his college coaches (forget which one, think it was the Augusta State coach) has been quoted as saying that Reed was brutally hard on himself, but his father was even harder, and there was a strong implication that a lot of Reed's immaturity was based on his family relationships. Based on what I have read, cutting ties to his family was a big part of Reed deciding to grow up.

The most troubling parts of his background are the accusations of cheating and stealing at Georgia. One of his teammates at the time was Brian Harmon, and the only comment I've read from him was to point out that Reed was a 17 year old freshman at Georgia and that "We all do a lot of stupid shit when we're 17."

I like his game and his approach. I also like the fact that he's not the typical cookie-cutter pro. But he's always going to be a polarizing figure on the tour.

I thought it was telling that Matt Kuchar stayed around to watch him finish 18. Everyone thinks he's the nicest guy on the planet, and everyone hates Reed, yet, clearly there is some fondness there. Bubba was out to watch him, and Reed gave his son a HUGE high five about 2 minutes after sinking the winning putt. Rickie gave him a real hug, not a golf-bro hug, after losing to him by 1 stroke. The guys who appear to know him well now, as a man, not as a boy, love him. I quite like his attitude on the course - he backs it up for the most part. I'm happy for the guy.

They get props for more pro-tracer, but I think CBS is terrible and way behind NBC and Fox in golf coverage. It is too bad the green jackets like them. Nobilo and Kostis are fine, but the rest of their team is just so bland. Faldo I just kind of there. I don’t dislike him, but he just seems to talk a lot without really ever providing any insight. “Fractions! Blocked! For safety!.” Nantz is Nantz.

The production decisions around Spieth’s second shot on 13 was really bad yesterday as well. That shot shouldn’t have been on a 3-4 minute delay.

Dottie and Nantz are both really awful. Faldo isn't great. I agree that CBS should be better.

They really did figure out the featured groups thing, however. Not having to switch between groups was a pleasure.

I don’t care for the CBS personalities, but it’s worth mentioning that the blandness is imposed by the folks wearing the green jackets. (Augusta National owns the broadcast and hires CBS to run it. They consider the blandness to be a feature rather than a bug.)

I agree with your criticisms but given who is caking the shots, I don’t think another network would be any better.

Yeah, I guess that is fair. I just feel like they (Faldo in particular) could provide a little more insight about the course and particular shots that a player faces without crossing the dumbass boundaries set by ANGC.

Wow. I think Fox is terrible. They have more tech but their announcers are awful, imo.

I'm with you on this. They broadcast so few tournaments it must be harder for them to develop cohesive broadcasts. Though CBS has been doing this forever and they miss way too many live shots. NBC is my favorite...I enjoy Johnny Miller, Dan Hicks, Gary Koch, and Maltbie.

I probably obsess over this stuff too much.

Yeah it seems to indicate to me that alot of the issues stem from an abusive relationship with his parents, which is a total shit reason to dislike someone. Especially as a fan.

I love Fox. As much as I love Johnny Miller, I barely even hear the commentators. Just give me more pro tracer. The internet was exploding last night about some Imagine Dragons comments that I didn't even hear and I didn't even piss without having my phone on the broadcast.

Also for all the hype it got there wasn't even close to enough pro tracer.

Flado is actually really good if you listen for his golf knowledge. I love hearing the way he thinks about the course and he has great insights. He definitely is not great at filling dead air time (for which there is a lot of in golf), but I think he more than makes up for it with his golf knowledge. I enjoy Faldo for that reason.

Ken Venturi was the best of the best and even he had trouble filling dead air time. Go back and watch some old broadcasts and it can be painful at times. It's tough to come up with different things week in and week out.

Faldo is great IMO.

I like Faldo. He absolutely has great knowledge/insight and is worth listening to. He just needs a Feherty type to add some character to the broadcast but that’s fine with a multi-person team.

I think Miller is over the hill. Probably has been for a decade. Totally mailing it in lately.
