The 2018 Masters Tournament

The cheating stories (also mentioned by Zomp) give me great pause. If true, he deserves all the scorn he gets. However, the stories have always struck me as a specifics-free smear campaign conducted by the enemies he made in college. I'm unaware of any allegations of cheating as a pro.

In a lot of ways, the stories about Reed remind me of how pros treated Ben Crenshaw when he came on tour. Crenshaw was a dominant amateur and won his first tournament as a pro. But he was not popular and stories (without any names behind them) of cheating in college were everywhere. And eventually Crenshaw evolved into a beloved figure and guardian of the traditions of the game.

I'll repeat what I said earlier - I like the fearlessness of Reed's game and his talent is immense. I am aware that he was somewhat toxic in college, but he seems to have grown out of it. The cheating allegations will always be what stops me from being a full-on fan.
Not to pick on you specifically, but if we want to dislike Reed for these rumors of rules violations, Tiger has had his share of highly public rules controversies...

...in a way that Reed hasn't, and he seems pretty untouchable in the public eye. (And Tiger is a proven marital cheat, although I suspect he's hardly alone in this regard on Tour, and he's got some way to go before his escapades match Arnold Palmer's in this regard.) My point is, all of this stuff is in the eye of the beholder; Tiger fans remind me of Trump supporters in some ways, willing to overlook a multitude of sins for their man because he does one thing very well and in a certain style all of his own, and it's not really rational why anyone who loves Tiger would intensely dislike Reed. But there's nothing wrong per se with having differing personal tastes.

Tiger is actually a lot like Reed in this one way: both were raised by domineering men and the experience shaped them in ways that were unhealthy for their emotional maturity. In Woods' case, he didn't seem to come to grips with this until his reckless behavior blew up in public. Reed cut off his parents several years ago and appears to be a lot more stable at an early age.

Edit: I read your links and I remember the incidents very well. And the reason that the allegations of cheating never stuck to Woods is that there is a massive difference between getting a rule wrong, which is what Woods was accused of, and willful cheating, which is what Reed has been accused of. (Allegations of willful cheating is what caused Vijay to leave one of the Asian tours and come to the US and have hounded Colin Montgomerie for years.) If you want to discuss in more detail, I'm happy to do so over PMs rather than derailing the thread.

That's quite a good shout.

That's mostly fair enough, although I vividly remember the Players Championship incident and thought to myself that anyone who tried to drop the ball where Tiger did was either a) trying to bend the rules to his advantage, or b) someone who has no idea how ball flight and physics work. Anyway, I won't be derailing the thread further just now, as I'm about to go on air, but I think it does make for interesting pregame conversation in the context of today's final round and who people are rooting for, which is why I brought it up here.

This should be birdie-birdie start for Tiger. That missed putt on 1 is brutal.

Why am I surprised they allow you to sit in the gallery and puff on a stogie?
I was there on Tuesday and brought some with me, I didn’t get any bad looks and certainly wasn’t the only one. I did stand back away from everyone else as most as I could for common curtesy. The one change this year over prior years was no cigar cutters were allowed through the gates.

I was just kind of surprised to see a guy right behind the tee box in the middle of the crowd puffing away. It wouldn’t bother me personally, I just figured with all the rules....etc. could you bring in a punch?

You are right, every year I check before hand to see if they have banned them as I am sure it will happen sooner or later, but so far it’s okay. I had one year where I brought a nice camera and turned my hat backwards to take a good shot, within 30 seconds of taking the photo someone walked up to me and said “excuse me sir, this is the masters, we wear are hats properly here.”

I had a punch on my lighter so i was fine, I assume they feel the cutter could be a weapon to some degree.

It was a recommendation, but a strong one. I had no problem fixing the problem as I’d rather not get removed causing an issue over something trivial.
This year someone I went with was laying down for a minute and they went to him and told him to get up because he was in the presence of a member and it would be disrespectful to lay down in his presence.

Lying down is actually prohibited, as is napping, taking off your shoes, wearing your hat backward, running and plenty of other behaviors. They don't put these all in writing in the materials they send patrons, but the security personnel will enforce them.

I'm liking these patrons less and less. I always assumed Patrons and members of the club were all racist conservatives, but this stuff about lying down and no backwards baseball caps has me seething.

Is Masters the easiest sporting event to stream? I wont rehash the ‘why doesn’t live TV start til 2-3p?!’ complaints but this streaming service sure makes it a moot point. No logins, nothing fancy. 2 clicks and you have reliable and great quality streams with multiple group / hole options.

I would say in terms of your options and the lack of cost, it's definitely the most comprehensive and user friendly.

I literally do not stream anything. Nothing. Don't even look for shit online to stream. I pretty much get every game/match, etc. I want by virtue of having like one billion channels at home.

The only exception is the Masters. When I'm at work on Thursday and Friday, I have a monitor on the Masters all day. Not sure if that proves your point, but I'm sure I'm not alone in this. If it was even 1% harder to stream than it is, I probably wouldn't bother.

This past year is the first year the Super Bowl streamed without requiring a cable account.

Meanwhile, neither MLB nor NHL will stream their playoffs even for people who pay for their season streaming packages.

I'm pretty sure all sports would stream free if the CSA won that war 165 years ago. [/Couperin logic]

Webb Simpson - back-to-back eagles. jeez.

Yup, Simpson is -6 thru 10 holes.
