I agree. It is 1 year, and it also extends the negotiation window.
I don't agree with that.  Nobody knew the market for corners at the time.  Talib took a one-year deal last year because it was a depressed market for corners.  Now that it is a big market for corners, he's going to want to be paid.   I can tell you that he would not have been happy with the tag and don't want an unhappy Talib in your locker room.

Talib has to have our favorite talk radio hosts salivating:

If they don't resign him they are cheap.
If they do resign him and he only plays 10 games next year then they were stupid for taking a risk

Yeah, and that's pretty much the offseason if he's taking close to $12MM of cap room.  That's taking a big risk on Talib all things considered.

If there was a way to do a 2 year deal he was happy with for a fair amount of guaranteed money that was weighted towards '15 when the cap space issues go away that would have been nice, but Id much rather see him walk than have tagged him.

1. I would have tried to work out an extension and B. I don't really care about cap room. We have crazy flexibility in in 2015 and 2016 so it's easy to create space now.

I think it's going to be hard to improve the 2014 team if they lose Talib. He's too good.

Bennett stays with the Seahawks thanks to a four-year extension for $28.5 million. Apparently turned down more money from two teams to stay with Seattle.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/10/bennett-turned-down-more-money-from-two-other-teams/

Bennett will make $28.5 million over four years.  He gets $10 million in 2014, $16 million through the first two years, and $21 million over three.

Of the total, $16 million is guaranteed.  It’s unclear how much is fully guaranteed beyond the first year.

It’s an average of $7.125 million per year, less than the $8.5 million average the Vikings paid to defensive end Everson Griffen on a five-year deal.  Griffen has one career start, and 17.5 career sacks, all in the last three seasons.  Bennett has 23.5 sacks over the last three years.

Terms of Bennett's deal: 4 years, $28.5M, $16M guaranteed.  No signing bonus (what?), annual salaries of $10M, $6M, $5M, $7.5M.

Not sure the cap ramifications, but I would get those are also the cap numbers?

This is awesome for the Seahawks given what that guy for the Vikings got.  Evidently he turned down more money from two other teams to stay in Seattle.

The first two seasons, in total, seem to be guaranteed. So yes, the salaries would be the cap hold in each year. The lack of a formal signing bonus (the $10m/$6M split incorporates the bonus as salary) means he costs nothing in dead money to cut, but the $5M salary in year year suggests they can keep him if he's still productive. Almost no chance he sees year four's $7.5M, given the sheer number of other extensions the Hawks will have needed to do in between (Wilson, Sherman, etc.)

And yes, this is a massive hometown discount when you compare it to the Vikings/Griffen deal.

Talib's first six games of 2013 is not his true talent level; he's unlikely to play that well again. I think the Patriots defense is better when there is a true LCB to work with but I highly doubt Talib is that guy or that he'll play enough to be worth it.

I think there are plenty of ways to improve the 2014 defense without Talib. We agree on the cap room thing - signing TJ Ward and Jared Allen would improve the defense in 2014. Having Jaime Collins on the field more often should improve the 2014 defense all by itself. Armond Armstead is going to be an All-Pro because of all the reps he got with my RFP team. It's a sunshine day.

I like that he's big and I like that he can take out big guys when he's healthy. His ability to take away the number one weapon goes so well with what BB wants to do.

In theory of course they could improve the defense, but in reality if they won't pay Talib why would they pay Ward, Verner, or Revis?

BTW, not a big fan of Verner after I found out he sticks to the number 2 WRs and gets abused by big WRs.

The #Patriots will gain around $2.87 million in cap space from treatment of Brandon Lloyds option and settlement with Jon Fanene

They don't need it but I'm glad they got it.

It certainly gives them more wiggle room with restructuring, Phragle - that's a roughly 20% bonus to what we have, right? Not bad. That plus restructures = room enough for a CB1 (Talib or otherwise) and a few other goodies. After Talib who is your other highest priority?

No, obviously I see that Delmas will sign with Miami.  My question to you is why do you think Harmon is the full-time SS just because Delmas signs with the Dolphins?

In hindsight it was kind of a dumb thing to say, bu I just thought Delmas was one of the "Patriot-like" signings they could look into at safety, and now he's off the market. I don't see them shelling out money for Ward, Whitner or Byrd, and they have more pressing needs to address early in the draft. Obviously, it's way too early to say that, by I wouldn't be surprised if we went into the season with Harmon playing a prominent role in the defensive backfield.

I wouldn't dismiss a couple of extra million dollars in cap room so easily.  Yes, they have other ways of getting cap room (restructuring Wilfork and Ghost, cutting a couple of other marginal players), but they do have some guys to sign and/or extend as well.  And there is only so much they can do to roll things into 2015/16, regardless of how much cap room they appear to have in those years.

I don't disagree that franchising Talib would have been smart.  However, it's possible the Pats coaching staff doesn't quite share the same opinion of his expected worth in 2014.

We'll know a lot more in a couple of weeks time.

I'd be surprised if they pick up no additional safety help, but wouldn't surprise or worry me if they went into the season with it as Harmon's job to lose. He's a relatively high pick who played pretty well as a rookie.

Jared Allen and Von Miller (when he gets back and eventually is 80%)? That's a bitch.

Contract negotiations between the New England Patriots and Julian Edelman are ongoing as the start of free agency inches closer.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Patriots are making a strong push to retain the wide receiver entering the final 24 hours of the legal tampering period. If a deal is not reached in time, Edelman will be free to sign with another team Tuesday at 4 p.m..
Edelman is said to have a healthy market and his negotiations with the Patriots remain fluid. It is not known if the two sides are nearing a deal, but the source said “the music is still playing.”
Edelman, 27, played all 16 games for the first time in his career last season and finished with 105 receptions for 1,056 yards and six touchdowns.
Edelman returned to New England last offseason on a one-year deal worth a little more than $1 million.

When talking about Edelman, team source said they "love" Julian's toughness. "He won't back down, not even to Tom (Brady)." #patriotstalk

Sure. My point is only that they don't need it. They can afford to do about anything they want with cuts, extensions, restructures, and backloaded deals.

For CBs after Talib would be Revis then either DRC or Brandon Browner. I'm not sure I'd necessarily spend it at CB. There are other holes. Center is a black hole and I really want Edelman back.

Sorry, I meant after Talib who is your next target in general, not just cb.

Minor detail, but (fully) guaranteed dollars would be spread evenly over the four years for cap purposes.

There are a lot of players I like but like Talib they're all going to be expensive. You're familiar with Jon Asamoah yes? Alex Mack is a top center. Henry Melton would be a good fit as well. Edelman of course.

Dobson had surgery to repair his stress fracture in the foot. Out 2-3 months of offseason work.

Why was this done today? Did they have to wait for it to partially heal or something like that? Swelling in the area to go down? Not sure how long that would take.

I forget the exact details, but I believe they were hoping it would heal on its own.

Are they going to sign Ron Brace and waive Kelly to have more room to get Revis?

Not sure I like any of Brace, Vellano, Chris Jones starting besides Big Vince. But I love Revis.
