The $200 Lineup Game

Took this from the Athletic, who took it from Twitter. The goal is to put forth the best team for each franchise using players that only played for them for a hot minute. Every game they played for the franchise counts as $1. You get them for their entire career though, not just how they played for that particular franchise. Teams that have moved cities can claim anyone from a previous location. Players can play for multiple teams. Multiple stints with a team must count the total. Players must have played at least one regular season game with the franchise. Figured this might spur some debate as well as get some discussion going on players from another era and how they would compete today. 3 Frontcourt players, 2 guards and a 6th man are the requirements. (The hockey one had 3 F, 2 D and a G).

Here would be my Celtics team...what would you change or do you have a team to add?
Bullets/Wizards are also spoiled (to see if I could get Jordan on a team).

C-Shaq (37)
F- Artis Gilmore (47)
F-Bob McAdoo (20)
G- Pete Marivich (26)
G- Chauncey Billups (51)
6th Man- Tayshaun Prince (9)

Total- 190

Pistol Pete would rule today's game. That defense is a nightmare. I think Prince is also very well suited for the modern game. The big question would be if Gilmore and Shaq can play at the same time. Would Gilmore be able to develop an outside shot? In the middle of his career, he had 9 straight seasons of 70%+ from the FT line, topping out at 77%.
Hardest decision was between Prince and Sam Cassell. I might even be tempted to put Prince in the starting lineup and have McAdoo come off the bench to wreck shit. Opposing teams might never get a rebound with that front court out there.

I also went ahead and did the Bullets/Wizards to see if a team can compete with one guy (albeit the best) taking a lion's share of the 200.

C- Dwight Howard (9)
F- Ralph Sampson (10)
F- Bojan Bogdanovic (26)
G- Michael Jordan (142)
G- Mark Price (7)
6th Man- Michael Bibby (2)

Total- 196

Much better than I expected for the Bullets/Wizards!

C - Shaq (37)
PF - McAdoo (20)
SF - Dominique (77)
SG - Maravich (26)
PG - Steph Marbury (23)
6th - Otis Birdsong (13)

We'd give up some points.

This is fun and I'm bored at work. Not sure if this is better or not, but with some tweaks, you can get Gary Payton into the Celtics lineup:

C - Shaq - 37
F - McAdoo - 20
F- Gugliotta - 20
G - Maravich - 26
G - Payton - 77
6th - Prince - 9

189. Is the downgrade from Gilmore to Gugliotta worth the upgrade to GP? You can upgrade the 6th man, but I'm not sure I'm seeing anyone on the list worthwhile.

Edit: I'd lose size, but I can swap Sammy Cassell (17) in for Prince and come in at 197.

The Kings would do OK

G-Cousy (7)
G-JoJo White (13)
F- Cliff Robinson (38)
C-Ralph sampson (51)
F- Clyde Lovellette(71)
6th-Caron Butler (17)

(197)

Orlando Magic:

G Gilbert Arenas (49)
G Larry Hughes (10)
F Dominique Wilkins (27)
F Al Harrington (10)
C Patrick Ewing (65)

G Doug Christie (21)

Total- 182

Not a bad team for a newer franchise; Ewing, Christie and Hughes would hold things together defensively, Arenas and Wilkins give you two 30 ppg scorers to go along with Ewing as well.

the Bulls would somehow have to play

Robert Parish(43) and
James Edwards (28) together.

Cazzie Russell (36) also up front.

Hersey Hawkins (61) at 1 guard
John starks (4) at the other

John salley (17) off the bench

Houston Rockets:

G- Rod Strickland (23)
G- World B. Free (58)
F- Scottie Pippen (50)
F- Carmelo Anthony (10)
C- Marcus Camby- (19)
6th Man- Joe Johnson (23)

Total- 183

Tough to leave Lou Williams off as 6th man and tough guy Charles Oakley. Not sure how useful Oakley would be in today's game. Also didn't realize how many really good seasons Strickland had.

I did the Atlanta hawks:

C: Rasheed Wallace (1)
PF: Danny Manning (26)
SF: Tom Gugliotta (27)
PG: Maurice Cheeks (56)
SG: Jerry Stackhouse (30)
6th: Employee #8 Antoine Walker (53)

193 total games.

Wallace is the bargain here, but I had a nice set of PG to choose from, with Mo Cheeks beating out Kenny Smith (33 games) and Kenny Anderson, whom I'd forgotten had a cup of coffee with the Hawks.

Bill Walton at $90 (are we counting playoffs?) could be an intriguing, somewhat expensive option for Boston.

But the Lakeshow have to crush everyone, right?

$55 LeBron James
$65 Steve Nash
$42 Karl Malone
$17 Isaiah Thomas
$12 Joe Smith

$189. Then wait one game into the 2019-20 season and add Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins for $2 total. :) (Of course, that would give the Clips Kawhi and Paul George for $2 as well...)

The Clips already have Moses for $2 from their Braves days.

Too bad there's really no way to get Shaq, Dave Bing (80), and Gary Payton into the lineup, even including Theo Ratliff (2). So I'll go:

C = Shaq (37)
F = Dominique (77)
F = Ratlliff (2)
G = jameer nelson (6)
G = Gary Payton (77)
6th = Darko Milicic (1)

$200.

The Clippers being a place where players go to retire can get you a tremendous 12 man lineup with a few bucks left over. Wings for days

SF Grant Hill 29
SG Glen Rice 18
PG Chauncey Billups 42

bench

Vin Baker 8
Danny Granger 12
Antawn Jamison 22
Jamaal Wilkes 13
Kerry Kittles 11
Stephen Jackson 9
Kenny Anderson 4

I wonder if any other team could put together ten players this good who played fewer than 20 games for the franchise:

Jerry Sichting: 1
Pau Gasol: 3
Eddie House: 5
Orlando Woolridge: 8
Mike Gminski: 8
Adrian Dantley: 10
Kenyon Martin: 11
Scott Skiles: 13
Bob Love: 14
Marvin Webster: 15

Anyways, for MIL, I think I'd go with the following:

Dave Cowens: 40
Pau Gasol: 3
Adrian Dantley: 10
Tiny Archibald: 46
Gary Payton: 28
Danny Manning: 72

It wouldn't that be too hard to fit Moses Malone (99 games) into the lineup; Moses / Kenyon Martin / Bob Love / Tiny / Payton would be a beast of a team.

Bucks are interesting:

C Dave Cowens - 40
F Adrian Dantley - 10
F Pau Gasol - 3
G Gary Payton - 28
G JJ Reddick - 28

6 - Bob Love - 14
7 - Jerry Stackhouse - 42
8 - Jerome Kersey - 22

WBCD beat me to it above, and probably did it better. Well done.

If it's time to pick winners, I cast my vote for Devizier's Raptors: Billups, Peja, Kawhi, Marion, Hakeem, 6th Man Strickland. Not just a killer team in aggregate talent, but also pretty beautifully constructed (by the standards of this game, anyway).

pistons:

Jeff Ruland (11)
Danny Manning (13)
Derrick Coleman (5)
Archie Clark (79)
Allen Iverson(54)
Lionel Holins (32)

A better front court could have

McAdoo (64)
CWebber (43)
Ruland(11)
Iverson (54)
Kenny Smith (9)
Corey Maggette (18)

A sadist would put Marvin Barnes up front with DC.
