Spurs are beginning a brutal stretch with tonight being their first of 8 straight road games sandwiches around the ASB. Seeing that I have Under 45.5 Wins I’m not very upset with the timing of these road trips.
Yup. It’s their annual Feb rodeo road trip, which they’ve historically managed pretty well but this Spurs team is terrible on the road (10-15) so could make things interesting.

I give up. The Kings are fun. Just gonna stop worrying and hope we find gold at #15 or whatever.
They are a bunch of fun and super talented kids too......but they are kids. I've been high on this team from out of the gate this year but they faced some major tests post-ASB.

* They return to a potential 0-4 start on a swing through Den, GSt, OKC, and Minny.
* Home for 4 that include Milw and Bos.
* Tough Eastern travel 4-game trip w B2B in Philly and Bos

We can look back at this post but losing 9 of 12 here is my call with a chance it could be worse.

* After a little home cooking they play 5 games in 8 nights at Lakers, Mavs, NO, Hou, and SA.

We are still staring at a 12-pick imho.

Agreed. Lakers are making the playoffs so we’re basically locked into 12-14 here. Slightly disappointing but it is what it is.

Mitchell, Booker, and LaVine were picked recently at 13. Adebayo and Marcus Morris was picked at 14, but the other picks there recently were garbage. Freak, Kawhi, Oubre were picked at 15 recently.

Ideally the Kings will slip into the lottery and he Cs get lucky. If not, and the Clippers nudge them into the lottery by snagging the eighth seed, the Celtics will have two picks in the teens.

Hopefully they aren't Yabusele and James Young again.

Or the Kings nudge out the Clippers and the C's end up with the 15th or 16th pick and nothing.

The Clips were down by 20 in Charlotte with just over 3 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. They rallied and won the game by 2.
Celtics need to destroy the Lakers and then rest half the team for the Clippers. Not code red yet but Lakers are such a shit show that they really have a chance of missing the playoffs. LeBron is going to quit if they can’t get AD. And his teammates know he hates them all.

@wojespn: Sources: Clippers and Sixers have agreed to trade Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, Mike Scott for Landry Shamet, Wilson Chandler, Mike Muscala, 2020 first-rounder, 2021 unprotected 1st via Miami and two second rounders.

Tough news on two fronts here. LAC appears to be ceding the 8th seed this year in preparation for something bigger down the road, and the Kings' ROS outlook just got a little rosier.

Yeah, Clippers just gave the Celtics the bird with this trade. This is the problem with acquiring these funky conditional picks. And now Sacramento is on a glide path to the #8 playoff spot. Plus, it makes you wonder about that blowout of the Lakers in Indianapolis last night. Lakers are the team with the best chance to grab that #8 seed, except for Sacramento. Of course, if they miss the playoffs, they get instead the potential of a good pick and can mess up the Celtics' pick being conveyed from Philly. Both of which could be useful if you're angling to trade for Anthony Davis and want to hurt the other guy's chances. Hmm.

[Edit to add Lakers.]

The picks are just not working out this year at all. & a tough competitor in the sixers just got a lot better. Smart move for clips tho.

Yes, they pull in a lot of draft assets (though the Philly pick won't be great), while making themselves short term bad enough to miss the playoffs this year and next.

They also put themselves in a position to trade for Davis on draft night. Gallinari, Robinson, Harrell, Gilgeous-Alexander, 2019 #1, Miami #1, plus other picks for Davis and Hill works. And might be enough to tempt the Pelicans to pull the trigger (barring the Knicks landing a top 2 pick).

The Clips should be tanking like hell the rest of the way if this is the plan, no?

Isn’t that implicit with the deal?
The NBA has to be pretty unhappy about how this is working out, no? Tanking to get a high draft pick/better lottery position is one thing, but here doesn't the tanking effectively erase the compensation owed by the Clippers to the Celtics, as long as the Clips finish in the lottery this year and next year? I suppose a 2nd rounder in 2022 may have some value if that turns out to be the "double draft' but it is worth far less than even a mid-round first rounder.

that's the risk you take accepting those trade terms. I don't like it, but there's nothing unfair about it in the slightest.

I don't think the NBA cares about tanking wiping out draft compensation, and this sort of thing was always a risk when the Celtics acquired the pick. It's part and parcel with this sort of protection.

It sucks for Boston, but this isn't bad luck or anything. It was, if anything, surprising that it looked like the pick may convey.

And BOS gave up pick 31 and 35 in 2016 to get that Clipper pick. Even if it becomes a second in 2022 it was well worth the gamble.
Yup. And we basically just need one star player like Kawhi or Durant to go there this summer to virtually guarantee it.

Yes, If Jerry West's plans fail spectacularly there is a chance that Boston ends up with a 2022 #2 as their reward. I'm just not going to be shocked when the Davis/Leonard Clippers capture a two seed, though.

I guess our best hope is that somehow the LAC buck expectations and make a dramatic run to just squeak into the playoffs this year. Unfortunately, their current seeding was the absolute best we could hope for.

The league is so deep now that even if they land AD/another star, there's no guarantee they waltz to a top-2/3 seed. We could very easily be looking at them next year as a strong team that ends up 5-7 in a brutal West.

I don't think NBA cares about tanking to erase compensation to another team. I don't think they should either. But they're probably pissed they're basically ceding a playoff spot while doing so.

I'm not jumping to conclusions. The Clips have plenty of scoring with Gallo, Lou Williams and SGA. And whoever gets Harris' minutes will probably be better defensively.

People said the same thing about the Clippers last year when they traded Blake Griffin.

The Heat were in control of the game against the Kings, until the Kings finished the game with a 19-2 run to win by 6. They aren't going away.
Yup. We’re going to be in the weird position of rooting for the Lakers now. Clippers are obviously a lost cause. Spurs aren’t out of the woods yet either and are worth watching.

There's no where to go to. They've already won too many games. Even if they lost the rest of their games, we are probably looking at the 8th or 9th pick.

Does it really matter all that much if they sneak into the playoffs? They get the # 8 seed in the West, we are looking at pick # 18 most likely? They just miss the playoffs, they likely have the best record of any non playoff team, so we are looking at pick # 14, with a 2.4% chance they hop into the top 4, but a .5% chance that they vault into #1 and we get the # 22 pick.

I dunno - seems like we are well beyond the hoping this pick is a top 10 pick at this point. I am not worried about the difference between pick # 14 and # 18

Realistically, probably not. But I’m still holding out hope of them falling to 12-13 and having a 5-8% chance at Top 4. At this point, we basically just need to accept that this pick is landing somewhere in that 14-18 range. Disappointing based on expectations but what can you do.

Just smile thinking that the 76ers traded the # 3 pick in 2018 and the # 14-18 pick in 2019 for Jonathan Simmons, the #25 pick in 2020, and the # 35 pick in 2019.

Obviously this is only possible in retrospect, but I think a lot of us thought (at the time of the trade) that the #2-5 protection on the Lakers pick was something that Danny asked for and would be an advantage for the Celtics.

Wonder if there was no SAC/LAL option and instead BOS just had last years LAL pick who they would have chosen at #10. Swing for the fences and take Porter? Local by Robinson? One of the Bridges?

Have to think that he would have taken the same deal that the Sixers got:

#16 (my guess is Donte) and Miami’s unprotected 2021

I am just here to say that I have embraced the Kings competing given that we have no control over the outcomes of anything at all. So why not enjoy it?

They are a really fun young team and were it not for Vlade doing Vlade things, I would put them as a sneaky destination for maybe not a top free agent but the next tier down. All of their core pieces are signed through next season and they have quite a few youngsters on rookie/cost controlled deals.

Finally, Joerger is a good coach (contrary to what SRN thinks, I am not Joerger though I would love his paycheck). I don't know if they will make the playoffs but I wouldn't be surprised if they do. Regardless, if I had to tell you two non-favorite teams to follow on League Pass, its the Mavs (all for Luka) and the Kings.

Memphis, now Gasol-less for the first time since before Tom Brady had his first Super Bowl win, with a 1 point loss to the Spurs. Currently at the 6 spot in the lottery. Given the tire fire that are the Knicks, Hawks, Bulls, Cavs and Suns, that's just about as good as we can hope for.

Yup. That pick is looking pretty safe. Unfortunately, the Kings pick is almost in its “worst case” position right now. Celtics really need to beat them twice.

The last time something like this happened was the year the Celtics were supposed to be tanking in what looked like a real strong draft but IT helped drag them to a pointless playoff appearance that landed them the 16th pick.

It sucked, but Ainge ended up pulling a better player there than half the guys taken in front of him anyway. It'll be fine.

Nuggets got it to 10 by half and Memphis is being blown out by Chicago. So that’s good.

It won’t be fine! I want my birthright free lottery pick! I feel like the Grizzlies and Kings picks have swapped values.
