Thank you to Jonny Gomes, embracing this city like no one else in his 1.5 years here

I have no idea how this ball stayed in the ballpark.

Still, I was happy with the final outcome. But Gomes is the one who got the rally going here.

I hated you when you were on the Rays, but loved you on the Sox.  I guess you're just one of those guys who do that to a fan.   Last year doesn't happen without you.  While you were on this team, there was no one with the exception of Papi would rather see up in a big situation, because you always seemed to answer the moment.

Good luck the rest of the way!  I hope you and Jon win another ring this season, and bring a long awaited ring to the fans in Oakland.

(And thanks in part to you two, we Red Sox fans can look at 25 years as a long time between championships as opposed to the 6 year drought you helped end.  What a difference ten years makes.)

I'm going to miss Gomes...the guy was just plain fun to watch...on and off the field!

Thanks for your help with last year's World Series win, Jonny!!

Amazing. All those shots were off of right-handlers. He was interviewed this morning on 'EEI and came off very well. I'd forgotten just how incredible last year was. Watching those videos brings it all back.

Goodnight, sweet prince.

I hope in the future when people look back on the 2013 World Series, that 3-run homer he hit in Game 4 will get more attention as the key moment it was. The Cardinals never recovered the rest of the series after that.

He's a Roberts, OCab type in the sense that he spent a very short amount of time here but the impact he had in that period has ensured that he will never be forgotten. Thanks for being awesome, Jonny.

Damn last year was a lot of fun. I don't think anyone enjoyed playing for BOSTON more than Gomes.

One of my all-time favorite players on the field and people off the field.

Jonny has always appeared to be someone who relished the opportunity to do for a living what any of us would kill to do.  He seems to truly appreciate the fans and, more importantly, the game itself.

Not the most talented player we've ever had, but certainly one of the upper echelon in terms of heart.

Hope you win another ring this year, Jonny.  Getting to do so after such a tough season in Boston is great.  Being able to do it so close to home must be even better for you.

The wrong side of the bridge....
There are a bunch of guys you could nominate for the face of the '13 title, but I think I'd pick Jonny. He was the ultimate round peg in a round hole last year: we needed exactly what he brought, on the field and off it. Thank you Mr. Gomes.

yes.  you have been his best spokesperson.  when he came up in a big spot, often delivering, it made it more fun to see your postings.  as someone else said here, Gomes is a good candidate to be the face of the '13 team.  Thanks to Gomes and to Rembrat, his best advocate.

He has been a huge part of the personality of this team.  He will be a legend in Red Sox lore forever.  Jonny is going home again. Thanks for the memories. You will be missed.

Probably my favorite personality other than Pedroia and Ross from last year. Not the flashiest of players but got the job done when needed. Here's to punting the helmet after a walk off. My seven year old will be crushed, Gomes was second only to Papi in her eyes

We lose a lot of heart with this one.

Any word on compensation we'll receive for Rembrat? I'm assuming he's included in the deal.

From NESN. You always hear comments about players who "get it" when they play here. Gomes was definitely one of those guys.

“I definitely didn’t want to go anywhere,” Gomes told WEEI’s “Middays with MFB.” “I just can’t fathom a baseball player saying he’d ever want to get out of Boston, to tell you the truth. I came here on a whim. I came here when this team finished in last place and I wanted to join this club when it was in last place. Rode a pretty magical wave last year. This year things haven’t gone as well. We were hoping. “But at the same time, this is the Boston Red Sox, at the end of the day. To be able to toe into that batter’s box where some of the greats have, and just to wear that uniform and at the same time share relationships, hit in the same BP group as David Ortiz and (Mike) Napoli and Dustin Pedroia. Jim Rice and Luis Tiant walking around, all the greats from the pictures up there. That’s the stuff that I don’t take for granted, by any means.”

“I know this year hasn’t gone as we’d all like it,” he said. “But please, please, everyone do not forget about that 2013 season — the worst to first, the tragedy of the Boston Marathon, everyone rallying around the city, the finish line, the duck boats, everything, celebrating at home. Might be down a little bit in the win-loss column right now, but do not let that erase any of those memories from last year that I get to wear a ring on my finger for. I’m proud to be a Red Sox for those times.”

I'm glad you went to WAR with us, not against us. Now go lead the Red Sox West to an improbable but inevitable World Series triumph!

Thank you, Big Games Gomes. I'm ashamed to admit I barely registered the fact that you joined the team after the 2012 debacle. Then you threw your arm around the city's shoulder and said "here's a beer, let's be friends." Here's to 2013, and here's hoping your new home appreciates the great guy they're getting.

Thanks Jonny.  The ring (and the tattoo) last forever.  Go get another ring this October.  I look forward to seeing you take Price deep in the ALCS.

Always a Red Sox.

I am going to miss him. He was a perfect fit at a perfect time. I officially retract all bad mouthing I did about his fielding in game threads. May he land in the perfect DH platoon to finish out his career.

The 2013 World Series run was life changing for me. In real time while Johnny is rounding the bases, I'm urinating myself in right field.  Couldn't have worked out better logistically having seen them in St. Louis and Detroit.

Was Gomes not the most as-advertised pick up in Red Sox history? The contract was fair, he did exactly what was expected of him as far as his success against LHP goes, he had some incredibly "clutch" / timely hits.

Best of luck, Johnny.  I'll be rooting for you.

Never rooted for you before, as long as you're not in pinstripes I won't root against you again. Best of luck here in Oakland, the folks here could use a guy like you against Detroit.

Just finished listening to a replay of Gomes interview on 'EEI from earlier this week...really, really going to miss him. The guy's respect for the history of the game, coupled with his passion for playing...all the best, Jonny...and we'll certainly look forward to seeing you back here one day...

Gomes came out smelling like a rose yesterday. He was awarded a single on a popup about 20 feet from the first base bag that the first baseman either lost in the sun or a little breeze blew it. In the same inning, he hit a hard single to left that the left fielder let get through him and 3 scored. He got 2 RBI, but if 3X GGer Alex Gordon fields it cleanly, he may have had just one. Big ovation for Jonny's first AB, "welcome back and welcome home Jonny Gomes".

Freaking goosebumps watching that.

I was at both Gomes walkoffs, and one of them was then (then two-year-old) son's first in-person walkoff.  He'll never remember it but I sure as shit will.

How can he be on 5 teams in 6 years after all he's a career 244/336/446. Maybe it's how he rises to the occasion as his playoff numbers suggest 143/236/245. I know I miss the point after all he did hit a homerun in the playoffs in game 4 of the World Series in the Sixth innings in a tie game. And..there is this "I've turned a team around 20 games 4 times", at least he has a realistic outlook about his role and the part he plays in it and he doesn't self promote.
