How could the owners let this happen. Do they not care about the fan base at all? They won’t get a single dollar of mine in 2020

We knew this was happening once they gave away his #12, but it still makes me sad too. We went to a Saturday game in 2014 and Brock gave a bp ball to my 8 year old daughter pregame. He had a fan for life after that. He seemed like a truly good guy.

Heart and soul. Glue guy. Absolutely massive in the community. We were lucky to have had him. He made it fun to watch baseball.

Brock busted his butt and played the game the right way and with a smile.

And he seemed to be a a good guy.
And will be missed.

Best of luck in Milwaukee Brock

I dont know what it says about me that I am so much more upset at this than I was w Mookie. I could rationalize that deal. Cost was crazy. No long term committment. Need to shave payroll.

This was just a good hard working guy who was actually still out there and could have been a perfect salve to a crappy offseason, and who we could have probably found a way to make dollars and sense wide.

So disappointed.

Thank you for busting ass for this team, Brock. Sorry our front office didn't value you highly enough, even if the fans did.

Happy he’s not a Tyler Wade-upgrade in New York but overall I’m fine with this. Holt is a fun player but he’s not going to be on the next great Red Sox team, and he’d likely impede our ability to see if Peraza, Chavis, Wong, Marco, Chatham, Lin or Jonathan Arauz will.

This better be for significantly more than Peraza signed for. It probably won’t be.

The only person on that list likely to be better than Holt is Chavis.

What am I missing about Peraza being a better option than Holt? Was he hurt last year? Because he was awful. (62 wRC+, 631 OPS)

Crap. I liked Brock Holt in a Red Sox uniform. Hope he does well with the Brewers. I’m not enjoying this off-season.

What Brock meant to the community and to so many children and families can’t be something we can’t measure in metrics. It’s something like civilizations of old would attempt in measurement of celestial bodies of infinitesimal, albeit unknown, size and affect.

But man, I think Holt the player? This is the game. Right here.

Meanwhile, JD is on ESPN telling everyone that the Astros have suffered enough.

"Tone deaf" isn't doing justice to this franchise...

I haven't had a player I rooted for as hard as this without the gaudy stats to back it up since the namesake of this site. He was really the embodiment of the Sox these past 5 years. If Brock stuck around I wouldn't be opposed to him being named the first Captain since Varitek, due to his contributions off the field and unselfishness with his role. That makes this almost as hard to take as the Mookie trade.

This has been a long time coming. We knew Holt would eventually end up as a career NL player. His skillset makes him so much more valuable to the Brewers than to the Red Sox.

Man, I'm going to miss the hirsute Texan. Thanks for being the consummate ballplayer, and for all your selfless work in the community. You brought honor to the uniform. Good luck in Milwaukee, BROCKHOLT!

Brock Holt, in addition to being an incredible part of the community, was one of those players who made bad games, bad seasons a little brighter because of his hustle, his flexibility, and his personality.

He's gonna be beloved in Milwaukee, and anywhere else he goes after that.

Peraza is not yet 26 and was the #1 prospect in Atlanta’s system in 2015. Baseball Prospectus ranked him 92 on their top 100 list — two behind Devers — that same year. Holt turned out great and never had that pedigree.

Hardly a sure thing, but he has a solid defensive floor and three years of team control, and it seems certainly plausible to me Peraza rebounds into a 2-3 win player. If that happens, he could also be a decent trade chip when Downs is ready to go.

And he still has an option left as opposed to Holt. I have argued for a few years this is the main thing recently killing the 1-2 WAR 30-32 year olds in FA but if all players could be optioned down (or just taken off the 25 man, made inactive) identically, I think that would help even the playing field for them and get them better contract offers. This I think is the one big card the players have to bargain with in the next CBA that the owners would like and that would be good for players as a whole, lengthening many careers a year or two IMO.

Disappointed to see him go. I thought with his community involvement and roster glue status, he and they would see to it that he was a Red Sox for life in the mold of Tim Wakefield. Once they signed Peraza, that dream died. He's a younger version of Holt with an option. And, considering what Holt was projected to get as a free agent, Peraza also projected to be a cheaper option as well. That might not end up being the case with such a late signing, but there was no way the Sox could have waited this long to fill that spot.

Brock Holt, the jewel of the Melancon trade.

Sad to see him go, a contributor on the field but a HOFer off it. Good news is the Sox should be below the CBT and ready to sign Griffin when the time comes.

Um...he signed for $3M and Holt was expected to make more? By just a lil bit but hey, every dollar counts when you're pinching pennies, right?

Love BrockHolt, can't believe he was here for seven seasons! Love players like this, who aren't superstars but worm their way into the heart of a fanbase. He gave it all, for sure... will miss him, and hope he does real well with the Brewers.

I hope Brock gets to play regularly and has a fantastic year.

Milwaukee is absolutely going to love him.
Yeah. I'm buying mlb.tv so that I can see him play regularly. I often felt that Cora didn't play him enough, but perhaps they have some medical guidelines the fans weren't aware of. Goodbye BROCKHOLT. I love you as much as I can love someone I never met!

I can only guess that Holt might have asked for more than one year... will have to wait to see what Brockstah gets for $$$ and years from the Brewers.

Yes, we'll miss him (and Mookie, too) but with Peraza, Wong, Chavis, Hernandez, Lin, etc. , 2nd base is covered. The Sox do lose Holt's versatility, however.

Peraza has similar versatility, recording defensive innings last season at 2B, SS, 3B, LF, and CF (and 1.1 innings on the mound). He also played RF once in 2018. I'll re-state that the writing on the wall for Holt in Boston truly was Peraza's signing.

I don't disagree - it's just - what prompted that signing? I am assuming there were some back-channel discussions between the Sox and Brock's camp... and I would think that he wanted more than one year...

I doubt it was back channel discussions at all. I'm sure they talked directly. I know they're not necessarily the most reliable thing, but MLBTR was projecting Holt at 2/$8M early in the off-season so I totally buy the idea that he was seeking multiple years.

Peraza is five years younger, has a minor league option remaining, will remain under team control for two more years after this one, and hasn't spent any time on the IL (not that that's predictive). I think all that adds up to a more desirable signing than Holt for multiple guaranteed years, even if the salary savings isn't all that significant. I imagine that Bloom having no sentimental connection to Holt plays into it as well.
