Sheesh. Our O-line now has approximately no experience. Hope the defense can hold everyone to zero points, because this new Texas offense, with no experience at QB an OL, isn't going to score a whole lot of points.

I believe long term in the Charlie Strong approach, and that ultimately it will produce championships, but this purge is going to be painful in the short term.
Gack - now various sources saying Kennedy and Estelle suspended for BYU game only.

I imagine this is fueling Charlie Strong's love of the Austin media. In his presser the other day, he kept referring to Kirk Bohls as "Curt" in response to Bohls' inane questions, and I think everyone understood that to be intentional.

Give 'em hell, Charlie.

Rules. You follow them. It's really not that fucking difficult. This just goes to show what a complete shit show the program had become under Mack Brown.

Or, conversely, how much some other programs put up with.
This I am on the side of myself.

Kicking guys off the team is great, but there is a real chance it'll lead to many players not wanting to play at Texas.

Given this season's laughable start, it's sobering.

It's almost certainly true that other programs do have a much higher threshold for shenanigans. It's also true that it will likely scare some guys away from playing at Texas. But I guarantee you a couple winning seasons will clear that right up. Oh sure, getting there is easier said than done, but hasn't that always been the rub with Strong?

We've known since Day One that he would rule with an iron fist. The question was would he be able to coax a decent team out of lesser talent (sort of the anti-Mack, if you will). The UCLA game was encouraging in that regard, stupidity that cost them the game, notwithstanding.

Here's a great quote from a recent recruit:

One prospect who appears to be solid with his commitment to the Longhorns is Euless Trinity four-star offensive lineman Patrick Vahe. The 6-foot-3-inch, 280-pound prospect who ranks No. 130 overall in the Top247 had some advice for recruits who might be on the fence about Texas. Following Trinity's win over North Shore Friday night Vahe made clear his intent of helping this staff change the culture and the future of the program when he arrives on the Forty Acres. While some recruits could be turned off by the way Strong runs his program, Vahe embraces the regime. His message to those who might choose to listen to any negative recruiting being done against Texas is don't come to Texas if you feel Strong's rules and regulations might be tougher than what you'd find at other schools. “Only a man is going to get through that program,” Vahe said. “If you want to be a boy then don't go. Simple as that. I'm going. I want to become a man. Simple as that.”

Are Strong's rules preposterous? Is the HC an abusive asshole?

If not -- if Strong does not resemble Tom Coughlin at the beginning of his career or Bobby Knight at the end of his -- then go Strong.

We have had week after week of lamentations about Manziel, Winston, and NFL players in deep trouble. One coach wants to hold people accountable, and that is being treated in some quarters like a scandal. That's rich.

His rules are not hard to abide by at all. His rules should really be a standard for anyone receiving a free education to play a sport, honestly.

I'm fully on board, just scared it'll take longer than what many can ingest for the program to come back to even be a perennial top 25 one.

UT's QBs have been dog shit since McCoy. If Strong can find his QB, the rebuilding process will go much quicker. Amazing how poor the QB's have been given the fertile QB recruiting ground the program enjoys.
This is true.  So much of UT's fortune was tied to Garrett Gilbert being the next stud QB to continue the line from Vince Young - Colt McCoy.  Gilbert was a 5 star prospect and Gatorade National Player of the Year.  He crashed and burned (though was drafted after transferring to SMU - something no UT player could claim last year).  Partly because UT was all in on Gilbert, and partly because of just plain old bad judgment, UT didn't pursue Andrew Luck, RGIII, Manziel, Foles, etc.

8 starting QB's in the NFL are from the state of Texas.  None of them went to UT.

Saw this exchange on some comments to an ESPN article on the increasing use of drug testing at Texas:

"Florida State, the #1 team in the nation, wouldn't have any players left if they drug tested like this."

"Sure they would, nobody at FSU would be able to read the results."

I laughed.

So today five-star linebacker Malik Jefferson (best LB the country, 13th overall player) and four-star wide receiver DeAndre McNeal both signed the good guys.

I know some around/in the program were saying if they could land Jefferson the dominoes could start falling with more coming to Texas.

And the word is that soon after he committed, Jefferson spoke with five-star DT and aggy commit Daylon Mack. Perhaps trying to flip him.

I think the worm has turned in Texas. That Charlie Strong guy is going to do just fine.

Strong's recruiting the shit out of Florida. Texas up to 8th ranked class in his first recruiting swing. Picked up Finley's TE clone today and yet another 4* DB. That defense is going to be insane in two years.

Got Wheeler yesterday, too. Moved up to number four according to CFN/Scout. If we get Mack and flip Murray it'll be Texas' best class in a decade. Cholly is killing it right now.

Mack lives in the town next to where I grew up, we were rivals. I know some people he knows well. I think he'll end up at TCU. Gilmer's Boyd would be a huge get for Strong that I think happens.

Too bad none can play QB, huh.

Strong fired a few coaches after the bowl game if you didn't see.

I've been following UT recruiting much closer this year, as my wife took a job in the UT athletic department.  It's been amusing watching her try to memorize faces of the recruits who will be coming into the clinic (we spent extra time on Malik Jefferson).

As far as the QB situation goes, UT better hope that Jerrod Heard is the real deal, because otherwise the situation is bleak.  They would either go back to Swoopes or turn to Gentry, a true freshman.  Watson has said that his offense is too complex for most freshmen to be able to pick up, and that Bridgewater is the only player he had that was able to do it.

I think Charlie may be looking for some JUCO help at QB. At the post-bowl-implosion press conference, Charlie seemed to make it pretty clear that Swoopes is not the answer at quarterback and that he is looking far and wide for a solution. No word on how well or poorly Heard is progressing, so it seems likely that Strong is at the very least looking at a JUCO transfer.

I've read rumors Heard isn't making friends with Strong and the staff. I hope those aren't in any way correct.

If your offense is too complicated for highly rated QBs, you might want to fix that.

What a coup that would be for Charlie Strong and the program. I thought that was a third party that sent that out, but it's a good sign.

Unless he does the same with aggy and the cockroaches.

February 8th cannot come soon enough.

If he does a similar picture for aggy, I don't think I'd want to see it. Won't someone think of the sheep?

A friend coaches in the same district as the town he lives in, and being East Texas everyone knows everyone. He's convinced he and Boyd go to A&M and this is all just trolling for attention from them.

I hope he's wrong.

All the crazy Texas recruiting boards are breathing very heavily over all of this, now predicting that the class on NSD will include Mack, Boyd, Soso, Murray, Locksley and some other big names I can't remember. Would move Texas up to number three in recruiting rankings. That would be impressive.

I don't buy it. Sumlin's an incredible recruiter and has a new stadium and athletic facility essentially to sell.

Murray (the 5* QB who might end up going to play pro baseball) officially pledged to the bad guys this morning. Hill and Boyd will make their announcement in a few hours. Color me not shocked when Boyd goes Aggie.

Good news, bad news day.

Kai Locksley flipped from Florida State today and committed to Texas. Swoopes won't throw a football, thank god.

Unfortunately Mack apparently has eliminated Texas.

Locksley is a project though.  He played WR at the Under Armor game and is very raw as a QB (odd, given who his father is).  Supposedly he even wanted assurances that he would be able to redshirt his first year and not be tossed on the field as a freshman.  Still a nice get, especially since they struck out with all other QB recruits.

WR Ryan Newsome flipped this morning from UCLA to Texas. Might end up being a top 6 class for Strong, which color me shocked/impressed.

Signing day for coaches has to be the most nerve-wracking day there is.

ESPN has Texas at number seven, CFN has us at six.

A very good class with two big misses in Murray and Mack, but overall filled key needs: six OL, the number one outside linebacker, some four-star studs at MLB, a four-star QB project in Locksley, a lot of four-star talent at RB and WR and probably the best defensive backfield class in the nation. 29 signees as of now. We can take 31 this year, so maybe a JUCO QB transfer and a late surprise from among the unsigned?

Very pleased with this class coming off a losing season and an embarrassing bowl blowout. Once we start winning with these guys, Charlie is going to knock it out of the park.
