Great move by the Patriots. Get off his salary plus move up in the draft in each of those rounds.

Moved up in those rounds for a guy likely to be cut? Nice work.

This trade doesn't happen if the Pats had won a couple of more games in 2020 and were picking lower down in each round...more BB brilliance ;)

What a steal. You create cap space, upgrade the tackle position with Brown, and then upgrade 3 picks in each of the first 3 rounds day 3 from a 33 year old guy on the decline who you were probably going to cut. BRAVO! AXIOS! άξιος!

Yup. Love this move. They just got back the value of that comp pick that the stupid formula stole from us.

Cannon goes home to Texas. He might sign a team-friendly extension.

This is a mind boggling trade for Houston. For a team with essentially no draft capital early on they trade down in 3 different rounds for an aging 32 year old tackle on the back 9 that hasn’t played in a year.

For Houston, this seems like a poor gamble. If it pays off, they’ll get a good value at tackle (about 7M), but there’s a good chance it won’t pay off.

Also, bad sign for their 2019 first round selection of Tytus Howard (23rd overall). I don’t think you pay 7M and some draft equity for what you intend to be swing tackle, let’s put it that way.

banking on the Tunsil-Cannon pairing to protect their QB....

On surface, this doesn't sound like much. In reality, it is a fairly huge haul.
Given that there's less info on the players in this draft than any in decades, the value of moving up a dozen slots in a later round is not what it would be in other years.

I've always really liked Cannon's game so although I am already persuaded that this is a good deal, it is too bad to see him go. Admittedly, I mostly think about Cannon when I notice he is absent, but still.

This is a legit head scratcher to me from Houston’s standpoint. It was pretty clear that the Patriots were fairly likely to cut Cannon. And he is a guy that has not played in over a year and has not reported/taken a physical. I would have thought a swap of 6th rounders would be it.

It feels like there is a lot of value here for the Patriots — including the $6M+ in salary cap space in creates in advance of Wednesday.

Also, as I didn’t want to gamethread the offense/defense threads, may I just say that I have legitimately not been this excited about a League season (FA) beginning ever. I’m so intrigued to see what they are going to do — and what is ther veterans across the league become available.

Maybe, but higher picks are always better, so there's value.

Very happy with the move, but still a bit bittersweet seeing a core member of the second half of the dynasty leaving. One of my favorite pictures of the last decade:

When I saw the headline, before I read details, I assumed much of the return to NE would be 2022 draft picks based on Cannons snaps or games played this coming season.
Can’t believe Houston gave up that much draft leverage for such a question mark.

Lots of talk about Cannon being a question mark, but his replacement has missed 16 games the last two seasons and has had serious knee and shoulder issues already in his career. In a vacuum, this is a good deal. But if Brown ends up missing half the season or hasnt fully recovered from his knee injury, these pick swaps are going to feel like a lost trade.

Maybe, but the flip side is Cannon is on the back 9, makes a lot, and was never exactly in awesome shape pre pandemic. He was a fine player in 2018-2019 but maybe average at best as a starting tackle. I was ready to move on either way. In the end they got something back for a player I thought would get cut.

Onwenu’s ability to play RT at a high level definitely helps here. Finding quality guards in the middle/late rounds is one of the organization’s biggest strengths.

Yes, though the relevant question is whether we should expect Cannon or Brown to play more games in 2021 right? To me, in both cases there's a lot of risk so not sure the difference is very significant as neither guy is very healthy/reliable. Though the reasons historically are pretty different and thus, a reasonable person could feel Brown is riskier in 2021 I guess

Cannon got beat on a play that lost us that stupid-ass non-officiated Super Bowl. Apart from that, he was pretty damn good. But yeah, BB hasn't lost his fastball on draft pick acquisition.

Mason got beat by Graham, not Cannon.

Will defer to you experts re the balance of the trade. Definitely seems like clearing his salary is benefit number 1, with pick 122 also carrying significant value. Also, I expect Onwenu to stay inside. With his frame and quick feet, he's always been an ideal interior guy and the Pats will hopefully try someone else at RT and have Big Mike back up the position.

So believe that means NE gives up 158 and 194 and gets 122 and 187.

Pats now picking at 120 & 122 in the 4th and 187 & 196 in the 6th. No 5th at this point.
This is better than what was originally reported per Stuart chart.

Initial report was 1.2 points of surplus value (equivalent of pick #189, early 6th), this one is 1.8 points (equivalent of pick #172, late 5th).

BB wildly exceeded all of my excitement levels. What a fucking week.
