Emma and Leylah are both impressive women. These post match interviews are very cool.
I’ve been worried the last few years of where the women’s game goes after Serena and Venus retire (which I think will be next year). Between Emma, Laylah and Coco I feel the game is in good hands.

Edit: and Naomi too. I hope she take the time she needs because the game needs her.

I was really impressed with Chris Evert's comment about hoping that their teams allow them to still be teenagers.

Emma wins a cool 2.5 million for this after only winning just alittle more than 300k on tour.

The other thing is, this will be the last tournament either of them will ever play where there was no expectation of them. Hopefully they can both handle the change in expectation.

It'll be tough for Fernandez to stay grounded. It'll be almost impossible for Raducanu to do so in the British media environment. (I hope she becomes Andy Murray's new best friend and gets as many tips from him that she possibly can.)
Seems like she’s friends with Tim Henman too, hopefully they can both offer sage advice.

California. Duh.
It's not like Raducanu was trying to draw out the delay, either. As soon as the match referee saw the blood she was instructed to go sit down, and the doctor came and treated her. As soon as the doctor was finished, she got up and continued.

Sorry but dramatic moment in grand slam, having a five minute timeout for bandaid is silly. Whether it is the rules, or not. Killed the momentum and ruined the moment, over a minor cut.

Emma went from 150th in the world to 23rd. She won’t have to be qualifying for any tournaments for awhile.

I was impressed with how poised both young women were. They were coached well in how to answer the questions post match also. I agree with Chris Everet that I hope they have a good support system and lead as much of a normal life as possible. I remember how miserable Osaka looked after beating Serena and it was refreshing to see joy in both players today.

I think the ill-timed cut thing is a non-story. Raducanu was going to win anyway, maybe it would have taken another game or two.

Emma Raducanu is a marketer's dream, she's a personable and attractive young woman with a multicultural background and an incredible story. She's going to have tons of opportunities offered to her, it's going to be a balancing act for her team to take advantage of it while not stretching her too thin.

This is such a ridiculous take. What other option do they have? Even in the NBA you can't play if you're bleeding. Was she supposed to bleed all over the court? That was about as quick as a clean-up can be. They cleaned the blood, bandaged her up so it would stop bleeding and she was back playing. The rule is not silly.

Very nice. I get the feeling money wasn't a huge issue for Emma, but still. And I expect she will make at least 10 million in sponsor/commercial dollars as a result. And that may be a low number

Leylah gets 1.2 million or so, and will get sponsor etc money as well, which is huge, as they were pretty desperate on funds a couple years back

The 718
Leylah is heated about the medical timeout.
She should have used the time to compose herself. I disagree that Radu was a lock to win anyway. Leylah had at least one break point and didn’t convert. If she takes that game it’s 5-4 Radu and Leylah serving, with a good shot at taking the second set - and to me it looked like Radu could have hurt herself more than the knee scrape- I feared a muscle pull or hyperextended knee when I saw it in real time.

The ruthless competitor thing to do would have been to acknowledge that sure, Radu might have been milking it (she wasn’t, but who cares for this purpose), but she was struggling to put her away snd now might have possibly hurt herself, so chill out snd let Radu do the worrying.

Stosur and Zhang pull away late in the third, 3-3 to 6-3. Some bad decisions by Coco in the last few games but nice run for those two anyway.

Daniel takes the second set. You have to love the way this guy plays with no BS . point is over and he is at service line ready to go

Medvedev is serving well but other than that this match feels more like Djokovic playing poorly rather than Medvedev dominating. Far more unforced errors than we're used to seeing from Djokovic in big matches.

I think that is unfair to how incredibly well Medvedev is playing. Medvedev is playing near perfect tennis and putting all the pressure on Novak, because Medvedev is the better player in baseline rallies

Novak looked a little off his game on Friday but Zverev melted down in the 5th. Medvedev has been rock solid today with a terrific service game and a few improvised flourishes.

Yeah, Medvedev is playing unbelievably, serving much better than Novak and not giving up almost any easy points. He has forced Novak to try to play short balls and charge the net, which he is not especially good at.

Medvedev has been a little better in the rallies, but it's not like he's hitting Djokovic off the court. Djokovic is just missing a lot of shots we've come to expect him to make.

Exactly. Kudos for hitting the ball back, but we've seen a few times in just the last few minutes Djokovic fail to put away shitty drop shots. The definition of unforced errors.

Some unforced errors, but Medvedev also forces some 'unforced errors' by being almost impossible to hit winners against. On big points against Zverev, he could just hit down the middle and Zverer would be the one to eventually miss more often than not. Here if he does that, Medvedev just hits it back and if he goes for a winner, Medvedev just gets to it and hits an even better angle back. I think it's 95 percent about Medvedev being very well rested and playing consistently well on almost every point and maybe 5 percent Novak not quite playing his best.
