This is almost as close as we can get, I suppose, But I'd really love to have seen absolute prime Federer against absolute prime Djokovic on the various surfaces.

Federer just announced on Instagram he has having another surgery on his knee.
As a huge Fed fan I am coming to terms with the fact we may never see him on the court again. I wish he could have had a farewell tour (or at least a farewell tourney). He spoiled tennis fans for much longer than we deserved.

His final win at the French Open was on Peacock. That was some bullshit.

Rafael Nadal’s season is over due to a foot injury so another big name not in New York.

And I really liked Stefanos Tsitsipas as well...
Last week the world No 3 men’s tennis player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, was asked during the Western & Southern Open about his stance on vaccines. “For me the vaccine has not been tested enough, it is new, it has some side-effects,” he replied. “I just see no reason for someone in my age group to need to be vaccinated. I think the concept was [for the vaccine] to be given to older people. For us young people, I think it is good to pass the virus, because we will build immunity.”
A lot of anti-vax sentiment on the tennis tours, apprarently:

Some crazy first round matches scheduled on Monday:

Madison Keys/Sloane Stephens (both unseeded, this was the 2017 final)

Andy Murray/Stefanos Tsitsipas (3)

Richard Gasquet/Daniil Medvedev (2)

Roberto Bautista Agut (18)/Nick Krygios

I love the idea that Murray is thinking to himself that if he wins this match, he becomes the de facto #3 seed himself.
If he can pull this off the draw is somewhat favorable to at least a run to the second week? Herbert or Mannarino (Herbert took first set) next, and then 3rd round vs 26th seeded Norrie or 18 year old Alcaraz. I'd get a kick out of "old man Murray" vs Alcaraz actually.

15-40, five points away from a two set lead.
I would've made my players run many hill sprints for that kind of statement! #onepointatatime
Murray digs out of a mini 0-30 hole to knot up 2nd set at 5.
On Louis Armstrong Isner goes down in straight to 20-year old American Brandon Nakashima.

Heh, I'm not playing.

Murray had his chances, two set points up 6-4 in the tiebreak, but doublefaulted at 7-7 and lost 9-7.

Murray seems to have brought only one pair of shoes out onto the court with him - speculation here on the UK feed (with Jim Courier and Tim Henman commentating) is that he's trying to get his team to get at least one more pair of shoes shipped out to Arthur Ashe from his hotel. Somehow he's up 3-0 in the 3rd set with sodden feet.

Murray takes the 3rd, Tsitsipas is lucky this match is still going as he has yet to break Murray even once today.

Crazy first day, Coco barely pulls out her match 6-4 in the 3rd, she has an intense draw coming up (Sloane Stephens, then Kerber, then Osaka, and that would just put her into the quarters), and Tsitsipas holds off Murray in 5, just under five hours (!!).

Any insight into why Murray and Tsitsipas didn’t shake hands?

Tsitsipas took a long break between the 4th and 5th set.

The other reason would probably be better discussed in V&N.
Ah ok...all the above makes perfect sense.
Murray’s press conference could be exciting. Didn’t Zverev just accuse Tsitsipas about getting coaching via texting during his long breaks?

Yeah, Murray was pissed about his long bathroom break/presumed coaching, same thing as Zverev.

Neither Krygios nor Gasquet putting up much of a fight or we were looking at 3 or 4 AM tennis. As it is, Krygios is done already and Gasquet is down 2 sets and 3-1.

That was a truly incredible first day of a Grand Slam, quite possibly the best first day ever.

Murray is still pissed:

Yup. Caught a bit of Blake/Fowler discussing it earlier today and Blake summarized it pretty well I thought - it's not technically cheating but it's gross. He called out fellow American's Isner & Opelka for doing the same thing...and praised Tiafoe who took under 2 minutes in between sets to use the bathroom and change.

And with regards to the incredible first day, not only is it incredibly accurate but it really stands out compared to how mundane today seems (so far).

Some tough losses (Korda, Vandeweghe, Sandgren), but on the whole a pretty successful day for Americans...off top of my head good wins for:
Opelka
Johnson
Kudla
Pegula
Escobedo
Brooksby
Cressy
Sock
McDonald
Anisimova
Fritz

They said the most American men into the second round since 1994.

which is great. Not counting on any of them to make an actual run though. It's just absolutely nuts that it's been 18 years since an American man has won a slam (Roddick, 2003 US open); and 12 since even having a finalist (also Roddick, 2009 Wimbledon). I don't have time (or the stomach) to do a deeper dive, but my guess is I could count semifinal appearances over the past decade on one hand (the only 2 that spring to mind are Querrey & Isners' runs in 17/18).

Of course, pretty much every country except Switzerland, Spain, Serbia and Scotland has had a similar dry spell for their men. :)

The remnants of Ida are going to mess up the schedule today and maybe tomorrow.

Coincidentally a long article today on that exact topic, pretty good:

https://www.gq.com/story/wheres-the-next-andy-roddick
Good find on that article. Obviously while all the hypotheses discussed play a role, I really do wish there was more time spent discussing the Martin Blackman quote that finishes with "And we really didn't react to it as a federation.” In my opinion, that is the largest piece of the pie. Earlier there are a few sentences spent on the USTA's role, but it somewhat glosses over it.

On the US Open front, at least with a couple of roofs we will get to watch some tennis today. Osaka's opponent (Danilovic of Serbia) pulled out, so I believe they moved the Halep match onto Ashe.

Not much happened during today’s session but Medvedev’s possible round of 16 (Dimitrov) and quarterfinal (Ruud) opponents both went out, so his draw continues to look easier.

Sloane Stephens crushes Coco Gauf in 2 sets. Hard to believe she played in her first qualifier here 13 years ago.

Fun women's match on now, #4 Pliskova and Anisimova starting a third set, 7-5, 6-7, 1-1.

Yeah that match was great, AA had a 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker but couldn’t finish it.

18 year old Carlos Alcaraz looks even younger but just crushed Tsitsipas in the first set, 6-3 after going up 4-0.

Up 2-0 now in the 2nd, blowing Tsitsipas off the court so far.
