Maybe the incentives are crazy unreachable and there's a low base, but this is a guy with 10 catches for 92 yards...the past two seasons combined. He had one catch for 8 yards last season.

Akiem Hicks to CHI on 2yr deal. No numbers released yet.
At this point I'm surprised NE was seemingly not interested in bringing him back. Seemed like a great fit last season.

They did have interest in bringing him back. The Bears likely offered him a better contract

Two years, $3.9 million, will either start over Alejandro Villanueva or provide depth. Kelvin Beachum is most likely out of the picture, word is he's going to visit the Patriots in the next day or two.
BREAKING: LT Ryan Harris has signed two-year, $3.9 million deal with #Steelers. Was stabilizing force for #Broncos last yr.All-time good guy

The Raiders ended their stalemate with Donald Penn and brought the big 33 year old Left Tackle back.

According to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Oakland Raiders are finalizing an agreement that will keep left tackle Donald Penn in the Bay Area.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/category/rumor-mill/
Rappaport tweeted that the deal is final and Penn's wife noted their signing celebration at their home in Oakland on Instagram.

This means the Raiders are going to have a huge and probably very good offensive line this year, with Kelechi Osemele playing LG (at $12M) and Gabe Jackson moving to RG.

All they need now is a little, shifty guy to run behind them. I hear Marco Rubio is available... [/jk]

According to PFF, all 5 of the Raider's starting OL had grades of 80 or higher last year. No other team in the NFL has three players with similar rankings.

On paper, probably the best OL in the NFL.

Wasn't Dansby one of the members of the crybaby chorus who claimed that the Patriots cheated post Spygate?
http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/178643/karlos-dansby-on-steelers-headset-issues-thats-new-england

"Don't forget about Spygate," Dansby said. "That's real-deal, Holyfield right there. You don't get no bigger than that. If you get hand signals you're dead. You're dead man walking."
"It is what it is at this point. Because ain't nothing going to happen. It's nothing going to happen to these guys. You see, they're Teflon Don all the way across the board."

Whew, at least the Browns retain Terrell Pryor.

@RapSheet #Browns WR Terrelle Pryor has signed his RFA tender, the team announced.

GOOD. I want Derek Carr to reach his potential and the Raiders do, too. Protecting him was priority #1 and while Penn is just a dependable veteran starter - and this isn't the "best line in football" - this was a key move that protects the franchise.

The NFL is more fun when the Raiders are good. And my man GF09 deserves for the Raiders to be good, again.

Led on the other side by the next DPoY, Kahlil Mack.
Ummm, I should send you this in a PM. But I brought this up to a former NFL front office person who wanted to know HOW you made that call. So...yeah. There's at least one NFL decision maker who thinks SSF is as brilliant as the rest of the RFP alumni do. :)

Past his prime and that is something Washington does quite a bit? Wasted roster spot? Poor use of salary cap?

How so?

Big name five years ago, used-to-be-athletic and washed up now. Am I wrong? Isn't that Snyder-ish? I had thought so but from your tone I'm sensing I've got it wrong. Apologies, if so.

As I have said, reputations lag reality. McCloughan drafted him in SF, and McCloughan has provided every indication in DC that he knows what he is doing.

No apologies necessary whatsoever. I was just wondering why you thought that. I also thought I might be missing something.

Snyder does make some silly decisions and I think you are correct that Davis is just about washed up but I think there are cap considerations from a signing and drafting perspective at play here. It could also be that Gruden feels he could provide some veteran leadership in a smaller role.

Good point on McCloughan, DC.

It also makes sense from a "Bring the aging hometown hero home" perspective. Davis has stated several times Washington was his favorite team growing up and he loves DC. Davis is still pretty popular in DC and if he is signed for something like the vet minimum it will generate good press and vibes in the community. He wasn't signed with the idea that he is going to be all-world; everyone knows he's washed up and won't expect much of him, but locals are happy he's playing for the home team. Think Flutie signing with the Pats for his last year.

Browns release safety Donte Whitner
The Great Brown Purge continues. Browns save $3.95m on the cap with $4.5 in dead money. They also have no starting safeties from last year (Whitner, Gibson).

Whitner was still going steady at age 30, registering 81 tackles and 1.5 sacks (career high) last year.

The Sashi train is headed for a 2-14 season or worse. If Hugh Jackson can squeeze more than 3 wins out of this shell of a team, it'll be a miracle.

The Raiders re-signed Aldon Smith today. It is a two year deal, undoubtedly with playing incentives to off set his suspension. He will eligible to ask for re-instatement somewhere around opening day, and hits the 1 year mark on his suspension in early November. I am happy with the move, it provides some decent insurance against a Mack or Irvin injury midseason and creates a nice three man edge rushing rotation among the three if they all stay healthy.

http://www.raiders.com/news/article-1/Raiders-Re-Sign-LB-Aldon-Smith/2d8d098f-8fd7-43a4-8b9f-94e9220859f6

They also brought in 32 year old safety Reggie Nelson for a visit, it will be surprising if they sign him, seeing how Jack Del Rio chased him out of Jacksonville seven years ago, but he would be a quality Charles Woodson replacement.

And, according the Shefter and Rappaport, in that order, the Raiders agreed to a two year deal with S Reggie Nelson, formerly of the Bengals.

Keeping in mind that, in the NFL, it is atypical for a backup QB to go on to success on another team, just for fun I looked up what every QB that backed-up Brady and then went elsewhere has accomplished post-NE.

Drew Bledsoe (35-35, TOT; 23-25, BUF; 12-10, DAL)
Rohan Davey (0-0)
Damon Hauard (10-11, KC)
Kliff Kingsbury (0-0)
Kurt Kittner (1-3, ATL)
Matt Cassel (25-39 TOT; 19-28, KC; 4-5, MIN; 1-0, BUF; 1-6, DAL)
Matt Gutierrez (0-0, KC)
Kevin O’Connell (0-0, NYJ)
Brian Hoyer (15-11, TOT; 10-6, CLE, 0-1, AZ; 5-4, HOU)
Zac Robinson (0-0, several teams)
Ryan Mallett (3-5, TOT; 2-4, HOU; 1-1, BAL)
