2013 second-round pick Teddy Stankiewicz (pictured) is on a very structured program with the Lowell Spinners. He is currently only throwing at most two innings per outing, depending on his pitch count. This schedule doesn’t provide an ideal look scouting-wise, especially since it limits his use of secondary pitches and it doesn’t show how his delivery and velocity will hold up deeper into games. It does, however, provide a good first look and a starting point of things to watch for going into his full season debut next season, likely with the Greenville Drive.

I have now had the chance to catch three of Stankiewicz’s outings and he has shown the makings of a solid four-pitch mix along with a projectable frame and workable delivery. Stankiewicz has an ideal pitcher’s build, listed at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds. Still only 19-years-old, he has room to fill out, especially in his upper body, as he matures without losing any of his present athleticism. Stankiewicz has a loose arm and throws from a high three-quarters slot. His delivery is under control and repeatable, but he drops and drives and has a slight stab behind his body. In three outings scouted this year, he has had some trouble holding his arm slot and finding his release point, especially in the third outing on August 19.

Stankiewicz’s fastball sat 90-93 mph in the first two outings scouted, but was more 89-92 in the most recent one. He topped out at 94 several times and also sprinkled in a few 88-89 mph offerings on the lower end. The pitch has some late life, but is relatively straight and hitters seem to get a good look at it. When he has located the pitch it has missed bats, but he has been inconsistent from game to game with his command and control. He had his best fastball in the first of the three outings scouted, recording three strikeouts with the pitch and throwing quality strikes with it, especially down in the zone. As he matures, Stankiewicz’s velocity should take a tick up, and as he gets more consistent with the pitch and improves his command, it has the makings of a potential plus offering.

Stankiewicz hasn’t thrown many secondary pitches during a single outing, but the three outings scouted together provide a rudimentary look at his arsenal. Stankiewicz’s primary secondary pitch thus far has been his curveball. The pitch has worked 72-76 mph, with 11-5 shape. He has shown the ability to throw it for strikes, but he doesn’t always finish the pitch. It has flashed tight rotation, but tended to be more on the loose side. Stankiewicz also has mixed in a slider between 78-82 mph, but he has only used it sparingly in the games scouted. The pitch has shown good depth through the zone and two-plane, 10-4 break. Stankiewicz didn’t feature his changeup in the first game scouted, but in the last two he has integrated it more. He has thrown the pitch at 79-83 mph, but mostly in the 81-83 mph range with good arm speed. The pitch has shown some late drop but he hasn’t thrown it for many strikes, which is understandable given how little he has had to use it. He has primarily thrown fastballs in his first forays into organized ball.

I was surprised there was no thread for him. He has all the makings of a solid major leaguer. I'll be interested to see how he does this year.

This Globe article reports that the "minor issue" revealed in the physical is that he was born with no right pectoral muscle.

http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2013/08/29/red-sox-prospect-teddy-stankiewicz-thriving-lowell/dFlLWQocbOCKz48dey459L/story.html

After the Red Sox took Stankiewicz in the second round (45th pick) in June, the process went more smoothly. The sides agreed to a $1.1 million contract that depended on a physical that seemed like a formality.
It wasn’t.

The examination determined that Stankiewicz was born without a right pectoral muscle.

He had no clue.

“I kind of didn’t really know what it was honestly,” he said. “I mean, there’s no muscle. It’s kind of weird — to me at least. But it hasn’t inhibited me in any way at all. So I just do what I do. It hasn’t affected me so I didn’t ever think twice about it.

“It’s kind of one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, OK. I’ve got it. Big deal. Move on.’ ”

Two ESPN blog articles by SoxProspects folks at this link, the first by Jon Meoli that has some great comments from his college coach.

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/tag/_/name/teddy-stankiewicz

“I think the biggest thing we did for him here was ... we got him in great shape,” Simmons said. “He’s a good athlete, there’s no doubt about that, and he’s got a great arm, but the biggest thing is we put strength on him, trimmed him down and put good, lean muscle on him.”

When he arrived, Simmons said the book on Stankiewicz was that he was a hard thrower who lost his velocity as games went on. At the end of the season, Simmons said Stankiewicz was still hitting 95 mph in the ninth inning.

Stankiewicz also ironed out his delivery, Simmons said. Stankiewicz said his unique motion to the plate, which begins with a high leg kick and includes a pronounced tilt backward, was honed through years of coaching and tweaking. But Simmons found that Stankiewicz could rush through his motion at times, and the manager sought to slow down his delivery to allow Stankiewicz to stay over the rubber longer and allow him to get better “tilt.”

Any idea how his stuff is looking?  Has he gained any speed on his FB, picked up a change, started using his slider more often?  Thanks for the updates!

Sorry Mainah, at this level unless you're going to games it's difficult to find that info.

Another short outing. He came out for the fifth but gave up a triple and a walk before he was replaced without recording an out. The base runner on 3rd scored on a double play for Teddy's second earned run. He's not giving up a lot of runs but the control has been fading.

Now 30 K and 15 BB on the year in 45 innings. 9 BB 3 WP and a HBP in the last 13 innings.

ERA now up to 4.38. Back to back shellings for Stank. He's having an up and down year. He's keeping the free passes down surrendering 7 in the past 6 games which is positive. He's just nor missing many bats right now. He also seems to pitch better at home.

Since your previous tally that's 51 IP, 41 K and only 9 BB. So there's noticeable improvement in the true outcomes space from the first 45 IP. Giving up a lot of hits, though for a juco guy in low A.

Another strong outing for Stank last night. This year has seen its ups and downs but overall he's putting together a solid year. The Ks have been increasing while his walks remain almost non existent. 17 K/4 BB in his last 18.2 IP is pretty impressive.

Little old, but Asheville is one of the most ridiculous hitters' parks in the minors. It was built into the side of a hill, so the RF line is just 297 feet away and the fence in right-center is 320. They have a 36-foot wall out there but it's closer than the Green Monster. Their park factor for HRs is somewhere around 160.

He did a lot better against Asheville in Greenville, which is to be expected.

Stanky deserves some love. Supposedly he has adjusted his mechanics to throw more over the top and is getting better movement, and locating very well.

3 great starts to begin the season in AA. 16 k's and 1bb. WHIP of .78. Great to see a potentially relevant in AA which was a big hole last year.

He won't be 23 until November either. I hadn't realized he was still that young.

You can probably file this under “Grasping at Straws” but Stankiewicz is still an age appropriate AAA fringe prospect so here goes:

Last August and September, he put tether 40 stellar innings in which he boosted his K rate and cut his walk rate significantly.

He’s been pitching in winter leagues, MX and Dominican, since then, adding 51.2 IP, 42 H 12 ER, 9 BB, and 44 K.

He had a full season of AAA, so it’s interesting that they are pushing him up close to 200 IP for the whole season with the winter work. Seems like you’d do that if you were working on a a new repertoire or something. It will interesting to see if he has a good spring training and builds on it.
