Yeah, we both know they are not doing board level repairs on these, they are simply replacing the single board inside returns, and with a 1 year warranty IRL that's as good as anyone really needs to expose natal defects. Hard Drive prices never dropped below $50 for anything new no matter what the size, and recertified mechanical drives have always been a crapshoot. Perhaps the floor for SSD will drop to $40, but I can't imagine anyone left in the business will want to even bother selling anything for less than that....

Right, it's only very recently that the price on new platter hard drives has finally gone down from $50 to the low $40's.

Acer G7 G247HL bid 24" VA monitor   $120
There are now a bewildering number of IPS/VA budget monitors at the 23.5 or 24" size always on sale around $120. What they all have in common is very simple stands (no height and barely any tilt adjustment), limited inputs. The pros on this one are: HDMI and DVI input, very narrow screen bezel, overall good reviews. The cons: external ps, no vesa mount.

Refurb Acer Aspire ATC-605-UB11 desktop    $410
One of the cheapest ways to a quad i5 and this one is better than average in many respects: 3.3 Ghz turbo  i5, HDMI video out, 8 Gig ram, 1 Tb hard drive, DVD burner, the mb is made by MSI and the 300w power supply is by FSP which is not pure crap. A pair of front panel USB 3.0 ports, card reader, built in a/b/g/n wifi and BT and gigabit ethernet makes this pretty complete, with Win 8.1 x64. Weirdly Newegg claims separate AMD Radion graphics, I am 99% sure they are confused and it's using Intel 4400 or 4600 cpu based graphics, you do get a free PCIe x16 slot. . They even include a keyboard and mouse...no way you could build this for 4 bills.

Pretty funny. That's the computer I just built for $620, though that has a few slightly inferior bits, but it has wifi, a keyboard and mouse which mine didn't. Oh, well, I have a nicer case, probably a bit of an upgraded mb, and SSD. Building a computer was fun, but if you're not building a high end gaming set up, you're definitely paying a premium.

Not really: you boot off an SSD which you might "just" be able to get into this (I think it has one free SATA port and with splitters the PS could probably handle it, but odds are the Bios and chipset used doesn't even offer AHCI mode, so you could never get Trim to work automatically, though if you stick to certain brands like Intel, you could use their toolbox to run it manually now and then), you have more than one usable video output, you have toslink quality digital sound output, you can add drives, memory and all sorts of other cards, so the price differential is not as great and then there's all the quality issues....but it's not easy to overcome the Microsoft OS toll.....and what we have here, after all, is a refurb with a whole 90 day warranty....

Good points -- thanks.  It's pretty amazing how quickly it boots with the SSD.  It's also pretty nice that it only has what I want it to have, and no bloatware and other crap.  When I call up my programs, I know what every single one of them is because I put it there.  So, there's that too.

Toshiba 3 Tb 7200rpm HD...retail box   $90

Gigabyte Gaming Laptop     $999
The whole concept of a gaming laptop is more than a bit silly, you can't really pack what a serious gamer wants into one (starting with the hopelessly inadequate keyboard), anyway think of this as a seriously strong laptop for one who wants something truly desktop like that's portable:

i7-4710HQ  Quad cpu (2.5 Ghz)
15.6" 1920x1080 TN screen
128 GB SSD AND 1 Tb 7200 rpm HD
8 Gb DDR3 ram
Nvidia FTX 860M video with 4 Gb of GDDR5 video ram
DVD burner
Gig LAN & WLAN b/g/n & 4.0 BT
Backlit keyboard with numeric keypad
1.3 MP webcam

Win 8.1 x64

5 Lbs and 2 yr warranty

It even includes an extra caddy that lets you remove the optical drive and mount any additional standard 9.5mm drive you like. This is really walking around with a desktop. The battery life for all of this is undoubtedly silly/limited, but who really cares...

Everyone else wants at least $1,250 for this today.

Newegg has an ongoing sale on some Rosewill stuff:

http://promotions.newegg.com/rosewill/15-1036/index.html?utm_medium=Email&utm_source=IGNEFL041015&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL041015&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL041015-_-EMC-041015-index-_-MECH-_-RosewillCase-LB3C

Of interest:

ARMOR-EVO case for $70 comes with 6 fans preinstalled (including a 230mm on the side vent)...also holds E#-ATX server boards.

Capstone-1000M 1000w power supply   after $30 rebate  =  $90
This is modular, 80 Gold Plus and built by Super Flower, who rival Seasonic for building quality high end supplies. If you want (as opposed to need) this sort of monster it's one of your cheapest true quality options.

LIGHTNING- 1300  1300w power supply   after $40 rebate =  $130
OK you're not content to electrocute small mammals, you want a friggin light show while you do this.... Rosewill will oblige. This is another Super Flower 80 Gold Plus modular unit, but this time the modular connectors are huge screw down things with pins reminiscent of xlr/amphenol stuff...but wait, there's more !! When you plug in any connector a ring surrounding that socket lights up in color !! Shame there's no case that can let you see this head on via a side window...perhaps you can rig a mirror inside... Despite the circus aspects, this is a really high quality supply.

SilentNight 500 500w fanless power supply    after $40 rebate = $80
At the other extreme, for those who want to do a silent build, your other main choice for this is a Seasonic 550w unit (that's as powerful as anything fanless gets). This is again a Super Flower, very high quality. Just remember, a fanless ps is at the mercy of the available ventilation in whatever case you use...you can wind up overheating such units.

Thinking about building a gaming rig and eliminating the second tv I have in my family room that my younger son uses for PS4/xBox. Wondering if it's possible to hook up the xbox and the PS4 to a big monitor and also have it hooked up to a gaming PC.

Was also thinking about buying all the parts to a gaming pc and leaving them on a table for my son to figure out how to build it.  He's already annoyed that his FIFA game cuts out on him sporadically.

Of course. The simplest way is to make sure the TV has enough HDMI ports and just give each their own. Output the PC to the TV that HDMI. Done.

Or have a receiver do the HDMI splitting for yiu, and enjoy the games in 7.2. Yeah baby.

The point is to have the Rooster off to one side playing FIFA on a gaming rig while his brother and I watch the Sox on the 4K.  The TV only has 4 HDMI ports and we are currently using them all, btw.

Full size gamer keyboard with Cherry Red MX mechanical keys      $80 plus shippping

Cherry Red MX are low resistance no mechanical feedback moderately clicky (when it bottoms out). Not overly popular because they are very twitchy...but if you want a very light touch keyboard this is it. Rubberized keys, red 5 levels backlit, supports 5 sets of 50 macros using it's own internal memory, pair of USB 2.0 ports plus mic and headphone jacks, very large palm rest.

Weird, same day Corsair Factory Store:

The twisted part of this is it's a bundle with McAfee A/V and the rebate is from McAfee. As you can see on the page, you can also bundle with Win 8.1 OEM x64 for $10 more, or Win 7 Pro x64 for $110 after the rebate. Of course all of these will allow free upgrade to Win 10.  It's the cheapest totally legit route to Win 7 or 8.1 I've found yet.

Rosewill RCH-200  2 Port USB 3.0 front panel adapter   $10

The main difference with a quality case from the past, and a current one is... the lack of front panel USB 3.0 ports. This fits any 3.5" drive hole (floppy drive) which I'll bet is empty today
if you have an old case. Plugs into the standard USB 3.0 header on any modern motherboard. A great way to keep a good old case relevant, these adapters are getting hard to find and never for
just 10 bucks.

Acer K24HL Bbid   24" VA monitor    $121
VA is an IPS variant, both DVI and HDMI inputs, internal power, VESA mount, 3 yr warranty. Only real con is ships with just a useless vga cable (go to Monoprice).

Toshiba 3 Tb 7200 rpm HD, boxed retail version   $90
You want the boxed version so no shipping damage, of course this is now on an even better sale than when I bought it last week for $95...I'll survive.

CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO  cpu cooler     $35 - $5 rebate = $30
The better of CM's 2 120mm coolers, can't break these guys of the silly $5 rebate habit, it's $10 more than the older model which, with the same dumb rebate, is always $20. Performs within
2 degrees of any cooling solution under $120.

OCZ ARC 100  480 Gb SSD      $160     TODAY ONLY 4/28
   No rebates or other nonesense.

OCZ 460A 120 Gb SSD      $65 - $10 rebate = $55   TODAY ONLY   4/28
With rebate nonesense.... this is their newest and even faster series.

G.Skill Ares 16 Gb DDR3 1866 ram  (2 x 8)     $100

ASRock Fatal1ty Z97X LGA motherboard     $130 - $30 rebate = $100
ASRock's top to the line gaming/overclock Z97 board at a great price. If you're not overclocking or contemplating needing 3 PCIExpress 3.0 x 16 slots, you'll probably never notice
using the Pro4 we've been recommending, otoh this is not too much more for all the bells & whistles including seriously upgraded audio components.

Corsair CX500 power supply      $50 - $20 rebate = $30   or CX750M     $80 - $20 rebate = $60
The non modular version, good enough for any low or medium range single video card build.  The 750M will power any build and is modular.

Canon imageClass MF8289cw Color Laser  with full extra set of Canon toner carts     $450
Almost every laser printer or MF now ships with 'starter' (half filled) toner carts and a full set of the genuine carts is generally more than the cost of the printer on sale. This is Canon's
wireless model with a 50 page feeder that can even scan duplex, AirPrint, Cloud print etc. A set of the Genuine carts will run you at least $290, rebuilds or generic replacements run $120-150.

Asus Desktop PC M11AA   refurb    $380
i5-3340S (quad 2.8 Ghz), 8 Gb ram, 1 Tb 7200 rpm HD, DVD burner, Integrated Intel 2500 graphics, Gig ethernet, HDMI video out Win 7 Pro . 90 day warranty.  Pros: standard 300w ps, has TOSlink audio out, card reader, keyboard & mouse. Minor cons: only 2 USB 3.0 ports and they are on back, i5 is older slower model with older graphics.  Still you can't build this for the price.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 Win & Mac   with promo code = $50
Full Photoshop is now only available as an online subscription you get to pay for every year. Elements has always been 85% of the program, mostly omitting the Pro aspects (commercial color matching etc.) and
is good enough for most of us who aren't making a living using this software. This sale is about half the price you generally have to pay... and no damn rebate crap.

10% off tons of stuff is nice but hardly boner inducing..

20% off Rosewill cases makes a bunch of good cases (dual front panel usb 3.0, 2 or 3 decent fans) available for $40 or less

25% off most optical drives, til 5/8, lets you choose any brand for under $15

The software sales include some decent bargains: 2 year sub to ESET NOD32 AV for $60 or 3 years for $80.
