If anyone is looking to bring their own cable modem rather than renting one, Woot (via Amazon) is selling a Motorola 6141 refurb today for $45, which is a great deal:

In case you missed it, sad news that TigerDirect will no longer take returns or exchanges. You buy it now and deal only with the manufacturer for issues. This makes them a much less attractive supplier going forward.

Per the following article, Tiger Direct is now completely owned by PCM, the former owners are in Federal prison for bribery. The transition becomes fully effective in February, most of the Tiger Direct staff has already been laid off and it sounds like Tiger Direct is probably going to be closed, so avoiding it will become very easy. It's probably a liquidation sale.

Looks like a matter of days (hours?) left for TigerDirect. If you have bought from them in the past, you might want to go over there and download your order history for warranties and whatever.

Staples has some cheap 3.0 flash drives. 128 is $20, 64 is $10. And then another 15% off if you load code 21832 via the Staples iphone app (It loads only via the iphone app, which works on ipads as well, and once it's in your acct, the coupon stays there no matter what device you use to order. No love for Android.).

If you're willing to put up with a couple of minutes' of struggling, this is a great deal on a wireless b/g/n/ac dual-band router:

It's less than $50 and has rock-solid performance for me so far, and it's very compact and pretty good-looking compared to a lot of routers. And it runs an OpenWRT variant, so there are plenty of features available.

The problem is that out-of-the-box it's configured in Chinese--you have to flash to the latest firmware and then navigate the menus in Chinese to switch it to English mode. There are several videos on how to do this on YouTube, e.g.

It is a really nice router. The range is much better than my older, not-so-cheap ASUS. It is available for about $30 from shadier sites.

I wish it had more LAN ports (has 2), but otherwise it is perfect. I didn't find the installation very difficult beyond needing to follow the instructions since I can't read Chinese. Thanks SumnerH!

If you like keyboards with Cherry Red mechanicals (light touch, linear (no tactile feedback), non-clicky) Monoprice has a sale, at least today, on their latest model, with free ship, $40. These are generally favored by gamers as the lightest touch, fastest versions.
http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13787&cl=res&utm_source=160413_email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=13787&utm_campaign=160413_wednesday

Caveats: Monoprice "red switch", these are, undoubtedly, Cherry 'clones', but of very good quality. The layout is full size but slightly unstandard: the Enter switch is slightly abbreviated as the \| key is inserted to right of the quotations key, this allows a large backspace key , there are a full set of 'standard' media functions, but not as separate keys but via a Fn key and the F1-F12 keys, like on laptops. No lighting, no extra keys or memory, just a good quality basic mechanical keyboard at about the lowest price you're likely to find.

Amazon Warehouse got flooded with iPhone 5s this AM (I'm assuming they're trade-ins and buy-backs, but you do get Amazon's regular return policy), and there's a fair selection of 16gb model from $170-230, anywhere from Acceptable to Good condition.

TODAY ONLY 6/29

Monoprice is selling 'clean pull' HGST/Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 2 Tb 7200rpm Hard drives for $44.99 with free shipping.

Monoprice has always told the truth, they say these are pulls from built but never shipped computers and have zero hours on them, with a 6 month warranty from HGST. While refurb drives are usually a silly gamble, if these really are unused, unless they were abused in the build/disassembly/ shipping....there's nothing that comes close to this price.

May not matter for anyone's usage, but Monoprice description says SATA III, yet 3.0GB/sec is SATA II.

SATA II and III bandwidths of 3 or 6 GB/sec are the theoretical maximum transfer rates thru the electronics of a drive, afaik no mechanical drive, including the 10,000 rpm versions, has even been capable of saturating a SATA II interface, and if so, only for brief bursts while their solid state buffers fill, as a practical matter I doubt this is even a token issue on real world performance, the real concern is 'are these actually unused pulls or 'refurbed' drives that were ever returned after running?"

A/V Malware Sale at Newegg:

Been a while but Newegg finally has good sales on both my favorite A/V products:

ESET Smart Security, for at least 3 devices, for 1 year, with promo code EMCEMEN73 $30
Note ESET has revised their new product and solved the interface issues it had when originally issued.

Webroot SecureAnywhere A/V, for at least 3 devices, 1 year, with promo code EMCEMEN53 $10

Both products are actually insensitive to if you install on more than 3 devices in my experience, and they work perfectly together, zero interference and extremely low on resources.

Promo Codes good til at least 8/12

Many Marshalls are stocking Mophie Juice Packs for iPhone 6/6s/6+ for $29. As with many things in Marshalls (soccer cleats, for one), their price is not necessarily based on the street price nor MSRP of the item, so you have to know what you're buying.

My store had three diff models for $29 (6+/60%; 6/100%/Air; 6/75%), and one model for $49 (6/150%, I think it's called the Ultra). I think the best bargain was the 100% case for $29, which IIRC generally runs $99.

Supposedly the case for the iPhone 6 also fits the 7, you just have to cut a small piece of plastic off the case, and then it fits like a glove.

Just buy a high mAh external power bank for the same price and you'll get much more battery life without bulking up your phone.

Amazon Prime Day is July 11 this year. Begins at 9PM ET on July 10, and run IIRC at least another three hours into July 12. Rumor is the big items will be TVs.

Last year, the build up was decent as well, as they were giving additional % discounts in the Warehouse in the days leading up to Prime Day.

Is there typically any preview of what will be on sale? I might be in the market for a TV or two but I would like to have some idea what will be offered before I have to make a quick decision

Edit - Looks like they're back now, but they're $45.

Amazon is so invested in Alexa and continues to develop Alexa, unlike some other home automation systems, I'd venture we'll see a decent sale price on Dots on Prime Day. (and I'll echo Nip: buy one on the cheap, take it for a test spin, and then tell us how silly or frivolous or non-useful it is)

I've never owned a piece of Amazon tech that wasn't clunky and annoying to use. That includes their apps, Kindle, Fire tablets, and Alexa. They get the job done, but it often takes a few tries in non-intuitive ways. Alexa is great at telling me the weather, playing Spotify, and setting timers. Any time I try to push it beyond those basic functions I'm met with resistance. Google assistant on my phone is 100% better at voice recognition, relevant responses, and contextual answers. Once the next generation of Google home launches Alexa will be relegated to a low traffic area of the house and used for music playback exclusively.

Ripped from SD (many of us in the northeast have a MicroCenter within reasonable distance). Kills me to be driving right by a MC tomorrow, and passing on this:

Samsung 960 EVO Series 500GB NVMe M.2 Internal SSD -- $189.99, in store only at Micro Center.

This is from their e-mail ad today. On the website [microcenter.com] it says the price is $259.99 and "See store for current price". In the e-mail ad it's $189.99 in store only, and $184.99 if you buy it with a motherboard, processor, or PC/Mac.

Anyone interested in some 1080p wifi cameras with motions, sound and smoke-detector alerts (as well as a few other nice features like cloud based video alert storage for free), all at the cost of $20 each, check out Wyze. They're a new company founded by some former AWS people. I've got 3 of them and so far they work great. The sensitivity to alerts could use some tweaking but otherwise, they work better than the much more expensive Foscams I also have.

I was looking at those. Any security concerns? That's what gave me pause.
