If you dropped current Lebron (as of his age 22 season) onto that Celtics team, he would likely have won 13 of the next 13. Maybe more.
Depends on whether Red could persuade him to sacrifice his scoring, protect the rim and play the team game. If anyone could have done it, he could.
I think you underestimate the maturity of Bill Russell coming off 2 consecutive NCAA championships and an Olympic gold medal into his age 22 season in the NBA. But if LBJ had had a similar opportunity for growth rather then dicking around in Cleveland being told he was great, he might have done as well as Russell.

If Tatum's on the all D team that bodes very well for the C's this season. That's the kind of commitment you want from your best player.
If that's his goal, it should also mean a lot less of point Tatum. Should be more of an offensive role for someone else too. Hopefully that someone else isn't Jaylen Brown. He should focus his energy on D too.

Should.

I hope Tatum and the team realize this and he's not burned out come playoffs. I think they do, given the personal. Brown should be in the same boat. There are other options to rely on. It's possible the team gets some positive development on their young guys too, but this is hardly needed.

Can't we just start already?

This is correct. As far as GOAT it’s easy to say Bill Russell, and then it’s easy to counter that by pointing out his era and the number of teams etc. But the only guy that I think would have maybe probably won 11 of the next 13 titles if you dropped him on the Celtics at age 22 instead of Russell in 1956 is James. That’s why I begrudgingly feels he’s the GOAT.
I was going to disagree with this and name a bunch of guys, but then I realized the one thing that would make them a nightmare didn't exist in 1956.

So it's hard for me to say anyone besides Jordan and LeBron.

Shaq would have been fun but I don't think he wins 11/13.

There is one player I will get a lot of grief for saying but I'm going to anyway. And he's not close to goat.

Russell Westbrook.

Cleveland’s problem wasn’t the coaching, it was the management. They had the greatest drive&pass player in league history and they surrounded him with non-shooters.

That and I'm guessing most of us think it's harder to win a title nowadays. Some of his years were definitely squandered away though.

I’ll never forget Danny Ferry in his first offseason, when the entire league was expecting the Cavs to make a max offer to Joe Johnson (because everyone knew that Sarver wasn’t matching an offer and adding another max deal when he was already spending on Amar’e, Matrix, and Nash) and Ferry signed Larry Hughes, Donyell Marshall, and Damon Jones instead. And then smugly letting everyone know that he was going to get more production out of his motley crew of cruft than Atlanta was going to get out of a burgeoning young all star. Had Ferry not been so convinced that he was the smartest guy in the room LeBron might never have left the Cavs.

I hate these “drop him in another era” arguments. It doesn’t work that way. For example, I’m pretty sure people are saying this about Lebron vs. Russell because of how much of a physical freak Lebron is. Well, while he would’ve been a great athlete, he wouldn’t exactly have been the same physical freak if he had developed back then. Similarly, Bill Russell would have been a different player if he had benefitted from developing in today’s environment. You can say that it’s not all about his physical stature but also in his advanced talent. Well, the same concept applies there. Lebron and all players today are standing on the shoulders of Russell, Wilt, Bird, Magic, and Jordan. Lebron wouldn’t be anywhere near his current form if he had been born half a century earlier. It’s apples an oranges.

Yeah, if you drop current Lebron into a more primitive game, he would dominate. And the same will be said about some future player being dropped in today. While it may be true, I don’t find it a very interesting argument.

Russell Westbrook.
The problem with this is Wilt Chamberlain. I don’t believe that replacing Russell with Oscar would have resulted in six titles.
