United fires back:

"Manchester United notes Real Madrid’s statement on the attempt to sign David De Gea and sell Navas to Manchester United. The Club feels compelled to provide some clarification with the following facts.
• Manchester United did not seek contact from Real Madrid for the sale of David. David is a key member of our squad and the club’s preference was not to sell. • No offer was received for David until yesterday.
• At lunchtime yesterday, Real Madrid made its first offer to buy David. A deal was agreed between the clubs, which included Navas being transferred to Old Trafford. The deals were dependent on each other.
• In the last several hours of the process, with Navas at the Real Madrid training ground, Real Madrid were controlling the documentation processes of David, Navas and Real Madrid. Manchester United was in control only of the documentation of Manchester United.
• Manchester United sent transfer documents for both players to Real Madrid at 2042 BST. David’s documentation was returned by Real Madrid to Manchester United without the signatory page at 2232 BST.
• At 22:40 BST, minutes before the deadline, major changes to the documentation came through to Manchester United which immediately put the deals at risk. • Only at 2255 BST were the documents that are needed to cancel David’s contract received by Manchester United from Real Madrid.
• At this point Navas’ documentation was still not returned by Real Madrid.
• At 2258 BST, the transfer agreement was sent back by Manchester United, uploaded onto TMS and accepted – all before the deadline.
• It is our understanding that the deals couldn’t happen because:

  • Real Madrid didn’t upload David’s documents onto TMS in time (Manchester United did)

  • Real Madrid didn’t upload David’s documents to the Spanish league in time, per reports it seems some 28 minutes after the deadline • The fact that Manchester United filed the papers on time was acknowledged by the Football Association, who offered to support that claim in any discussions with FIFA. The Club offered this assistance, as well as its own timestamped documents to Real Madrid but they have chosen not to go down this route.
Manchester United acts appropriately and efficiently in its transfer dealings. The Club is delighted that its fan-favourite double Player of the Year, David de Gea, remains a Manchester United player."

From the screamer:

what we really saw last night was a carefully waged power struggle. United like to think of themselves as the biggest team in the world, thanks to their financial might and their history. However, their post-Alex Ferguson struggles and inability to quickly rebuild their squad back to its old heights has weakened their position in the eyes of other clubs and players themselves. De Gea’s interest in leaving, Real’s belief that de Gea was available at the right price, and United’s failure to sign any from an assortment of available superstar replacements all strike out against the club’s self image. Rather than accepting a lower spot on the totem pole, United stuck stubbornly to their principles, insisting on only doing business on their own terms (and, depending on whether you believe the conspiracy theories, maybe even sabotaged the deal intentionally as a further assertion of power).

Real Madrid (rationally) view themselves as Europe’s top dogs, able to sign quite literally anyone in the world they want. When they and a second-tier club want a player (Gareth Bale), he comes to them. When they are through with a player (Ángel Di María), they ship him out to someone smaller. And when one of Real’s inferiors wants to play games with the transfer of a player the Spaniards covet (de Gea), they insist on winning in the end, whether the other club likes it or not.
Even as a ManU hater, I think this analysis tilts a little too far in the Pro-Madrid direction. Zomp?

I think what that analysis misses is that the people in charge of United (esp Woodward) are insecure, desperate to prove that United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that they, by extension, are worthy leaders of a that kind of club in the post-Fergie era.

Fergie would never have gotten into these pissing contests over De Gea and Ramos or launched bids for Muller, Neymar, and Bale that were destined to fail just to prove that United could throw its weight around.  He would have just said, "We don't have to prove anything to anybody and if De Gea wants to leave then fuck him let him leave."

In four months De Gea will sign a pre-contract with Real and Man U will end up with a lot of good feelings and £0. This was really fucking dumb.

I'm inclined to agree, but I think with De Gea, United essentially guarantees themselves a champions league slot and gives them a shot at some silverware this season. This, and yes the 'saving face'/pride aspect, probably outweigh the $$ for a squad like ManU.

I'd have sold him because $ and fuck him we're ManU, but I think there are a couple of possibilities here.

It's inevitable that the powers that be at UEFA will make sure United and Real are drawn together at some point during this Champions League season right?

If some team thinks, they need the player, keep him, no matter the money involved. Best example: Lewandowski (Dortmund/Bayern). If a team can afford to let him leave on a transfer, let the player go. Best example: Kroos (Bayern/Real), the guy many people today still think Bayern should have kept. But it´s the teams decision and they had multiple CDMs.

This fooling around is the most ridiculous part and this is exactly why no serious Top10 player should consider to move to Real or ManU (I don´t consider paying a top10 transfer sum for someone like Marco Reus makes someone a top10 player, so let´s see if Neymar or Pogba moves). De Gea will surely help them earn points, but why not draw a line in the sand and say we don´t sell him? If Real comes and he wants to leave, this subject would come up a few more times, but not like this and now everybody has to explain this. Maybe ManU wants Real to look bad and DeGea to think about a new contract, i don´t know.

The Euro is coming up and del Bosque already mentioned something:
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/sep/02/david-de-gea-manchester-united-spain-del-bosque

When asked if he would counsel the keeper about his current situation in Manchester, Del Bosque told Marca: “No, but if I do feel the need to talk to him about it then I will say something. He needs to be professional and move on from this episode.
“I hope that he starts playing again and is happy, and if he plays well we can bring him along, otherwise if he doesn’t play it will be very difficult for him to come [to the Euros].”
Of course, he could pick him also if de Gea sits on the bench the entire season, but those reports will be popping up daily, if de Gea doesn´t play when the calendar turns to 2016.
