I must have because I have watched a lot of football going back to 1985 but I don’t remember seeing that call
I feel the same way about the few defensive holding on runs that have been called agains the Pats the last couple of years.

Doesn't even make sense.

Have you seen it on a kick before? Not theoretically why it exists
I'm almost certain I have, because otherwise I wouldn't know the rule. I can't remember a particular instance, probably because it isn't that common and it was probably in some boring punt-fest game.

But they called it an auto first, it was fourth and 31.

They must’ve called it a hold on an eligible receiver. I don’t recall ever seeing that called on a conventional punt.
Hmm, yeah I don't know that I've ever seen that. You're right there, thinking about it, I think it was always a hold inside.

Edit- I honestly don't remember, I'm sure I've seen it, but don't know if it was 4th and short or 4th and long.

On replay, they called it on Tennessee #56, who sort of got tangled with the long snapper, but let him go immediately. That's an unbelievably bad call that will (thankfully) have no consequence.

where I was last at
The call is they just penalize the receiving team, rather than treat it like a roughing the kicker, with kicking team keeping posession.

Can't recall if I ever seen it called as it just was called.

EDIT - I’m wrong:

The only time I've seen a kicking team get a first down after a punt is a running into or roughing the kicker penalty. I have never seen a defensive hold on a punt, ever. It's probably happened, but that was weird. If there was not 8 seconds left on the clock, that would be been a game changing penalty.

In this instance, it had no impact but it was still BS.

Unless they called the wrong number, I think the call itself sucked, but I wasn’t aware that a holding call on the defense (ie receiving team) prior to the kick by rule would be an auto first. It makes sense because the punt is a play with five eligible receivers/subject to all normal rules for an offensive formation, but it’s a rare call (usually that’s called where the defense runs a stunt where a guy like Justin Smith of the old Niners would hold the blocker for a looping rusher) on punts so I wasn’t putting it together.

He picked up 7 after first contact. Tenn must finish.

And they are not. Since that huge 3rd and 9 conversion for Baltimore early in the 2nd quarter, not a single good thing has happened to Tennessee.

That was just a horrific 6 straight series' for Tennessee. 10 point lead to 7 point deficit and Tennessee's defense looks tired and the offense hasn't done a single thing in what feels like years.

They need a drive here. Henry or Tanny, I don't care, but they have to do something.

What did the league figure out?
Primarily, IMO, that the RPO is a novelty like the Wildcat which doesn't really work all that well at the NFL level as a core concept. Their points scored was bolstered nicely by their final four games where they scored over 40 points twice and Lamar seemed like he was freer to run if he didn't see the routes developing. Most of his best rushing games happened in Dec/Jan and they only scored over 40 points in December. They scored 63 more points last year fwiw.
