Super Bowl LIV: Chiefs vs 49ers Game Thread

I’ll probably pull for the 49ers, since Garoppolo is pretty hot and his love of “old hoors” (said in Frank Reynolds voice) is like, the funniest thing ever. Would be nice to forestall the chiefs coronation for a year. However I feel like the chiefs offense might be too much, sort of like the Packers back when Rodgers won his (2010 or 2011).

I hope that sub-human filth Tyreek Hill gets some negative press, because it’s annoying that he gets a pass for breaking his kids arm (probably) and terrifying his girlfriend (definitely) because he’s like, really fast.

As 1 of I think 3 resident 49er fans, I would like to point out to everything thinking about rooting for the Chiefs that not only do they still have Tyreek Hill, but the traded FOR Frank Clark.
Also claimed Terrell Suggs off waivers. Extremely unlikable organization.
And on the plus side, George Kittle is a ton of fun to watch. Definitely pulling for the Niners.

I will definitely pull for the Niners. The Chiefs are pretty despicable all around. I'd prefer to live in a world where Andy Reid is a Marty Schottenheimer type: A well regarded coach who never wins the big one and always is more remembered for mistakes such as not running a hurry up in SB 39. And while I have crazy respect for Pat Mahomes' ability, I find him to be singularly unlikable.

On the flip side we have a team QB'd by Jimmy G. I loved watching him play as a Patriot in his abbreviated run as a starter, and it's not his fault that the powers that be in NE decided to go with Brady and ship him out. It's not as if he shot his way out of town and I can't blame him for not wanting to hang around until Tom decided to move on.

Here's to an improbable 49ers blow out and a lot of shots of the Chiefs and their fans looking absolutely miserable in Miami.

Am I the only Pats fan pulling for Richard Sherman to get another ring (along with Jimmy G to get one, of course)? Last time we saw Sherman in any meaningful interaction with the Pats, he was classily congratulating Brady on the field in the waning moments of SB 49. Sherman seems like one of the more intelligent and outspoken guys in the league, calling the NFL on its bull.... more than most players. I'd love to see him shut down Tyreek Hill and have a big impact on the game.

I've also come around on Sherman. I wasn't a huge fan back in 2013-2014 ("u mad bro", as well as the "2-4" during SB49), but as mentioned the handshake of Brady was pure class. And moreover, he seems like a dude that truly "gets it", is an upstanding citizen, clued into social issues and a strong voice for social change. Much respect to Sherman and I hope he gets a 2nd ring. He's probably a hall of famer anyway but a second ring would really cement that.

For those with DirecTV, this will be the first year the game will be shot and broadcast on their 4K sports channel as well.
Nitpick but It's not actually being shot in 4k. It's being upscaled to 4k.

Except, Super Bowl LIV won't actually be streamed in 4K resolution. The game itself will be produced in a more standard 1080p HD resolution, Fox Sports executives said during Sports Video Group (SVG) Summit in December 2019, and the video stream will be upscaled to 4K resolution. It's the same concept Fox Sports has used for its 4K Thursday Night Football streaming, where games produced in 1080p HD are upscaled to 4K resolution.

I’m all 49ers except I listened to a full super bowl length interview with Andy Reid today and damned if he doesn’t seem like the nicest guy. If the Chiefs win I’m all it was for Andy. Mahomes was next and he seems like a nice kid but he staccatos his speech and it do get annoying AF. 9ers.

If Jimmy G wins 5 Super Bowls with the Niners, he will have one more than Brady. Still rooting for him though

This is your reminder, if you want to make money betting on the Super Bowl, take the Chiefs. They are going to win. I don't want them to win. But they are going to.

Too fast. Too talented. Ready. Whereas, if Jimmy G has to bring SF back, he will not be able to get it done.

KC wins 35-17.

Are you that sure KC can stop Mostert/P-A?

They couldn't really stop Derrick Henry but it didn't matter because KC's offense took Tennessee's run game out of it. SF has a better D than the Titans do, but it's really, really tough to keep up with the Chiefs offense running the ball.

Nice Pump and Dump scheme. You wait for SOSH to bet the line up then go all in on SF.

Edit: Up not Down

I know you and I seldom agree in V&N, but this is maybe your most disappointing post :)

I was just thinking about how money line on the 49ers is the way to go. Granted, I have a personal interest in this, but I’m confident in the defense (most of all), Mostert, Kittle, Garoppolo, Sanders, Samuel, et. al to do this. If they can take an early lead, they can hopefully shut this game down.

That (your first sentence) is definitely saying something.

Note, I am rooting for SF. I want SF to win. I want Tyreke to actually lose an arm during the game. And I am not betting this game because I don't want to root for Kansas City.

But it's Reid's year. Nothing is stopping it.

We agree on who we want to win (finally?).

I hope you’re wrong about the outcome. I actually have a lot of confidence in Shanahan.

I hope I’m not eating my words on Monday. But after what they did with teams that I think are better than KC, I feel good.

TBD...

Edit: It just occurred to me that this is all a ruse to destroy my happiness. Whenever I post here, SF loses, and now you’ve baited me into it. Well played!

I wasn't even talking to you. It was more of a global commentary.

You literally baited yourself.

I'm picking the Chiefs even though I am pulling for the 49ers and I think they are the better team. The way I see it, the Chiefs have a great offense and a middling defense, and the 49ers have a very good offense and a very good defense (was great before some late season injuries). The problem is that the referees can easily mitigate the difference between a very good defense and a middling defense. I imagine that there will be a whole lot of uncalled offensive holding in this game.

I feel like the Chiefs are being way oversold. They are a great passing and a meh everything else. I get that passing is sexy, but sexy doesn't often win the Superbowl.
SF was a better offense and defense over the season. KC beat Hou and Tenn and fell behind both.

So why is KC expected to win?

I also enjoyed ESPN asking the question "Where does Mahomes rank in the GOAT conversation if he wins" ... maybe we should wait just a bit on asking this question (I know two weeks is hard to fill).

Other than Steve Young and Russell Wilson, has there been a great running QB to win a SB?

And both of them were pocket passers, too.

Elway? Staubach?
