Brad Johnson may as well be Johnny Unitas compared to what Manning was doing out there
I guess.

The 02 Bucs scored 346 points.
The 15 Broncos scored 355 points.

The 02 Bucs 3 QBs went a combined 348 of 567 for 3,445 yards, 23 TDs.
The 15 Broncos 2 QBs went a combined 368 of 606 for 3,970 yards, 19 TDs.

Johnson was better -- especially at not turning the ball over (Bucs QBs threw 13 fewer INTs and he was pretty solid in the SB, although like Manning he had an INT). Still, not that stark a difference.

Agreed. Just found it interesting that Barnwelll's tone was such that Manning is and was widely regarded as the GOAT prior to this game and this second ring sealed Manning's place at the top. I did not think that was the perception going in to the game- seems to me that most people have Montana and Brady and then a second tier that includes Manning. I'm fine with moving Manning into the Brady/ Montana tier, just the suggestion that he is unquestionably the GOAT seemed tone-deaf IMO.
This is nothing new, Barnwell has always called Manning the GOAT. I believe it's genuinely his opinion, but he also loves tweaking a certain fanbase. And yes, as stupid as it is, I think we're going to see Manning pop back into the conversation after last night. Just the way it goes. Doesn't make it right.

Amazing run by the Broncos, congrats to their fans here. It's easily up there with the Seahawks and Buccaneers, in my opinion. I couldn't believe how limited Manning was and how they were holding up with the Pats and Panthers getting shot after shot to tie it up.

Christopher Price had a better article on this as I couldn't hear it either.

Mainly, at the Super Bowl, all the media availability is in a small space. Often with only a curtain in between winners and losers.

Poor Cam, had to sit there and listen to a Denver player crowing about how they dared Cam to beat them, they made Cam do what they want, etc

I.E. Cam was a sore loser. Since this happens in a lot of Super Bowls.

Whatever, if you don't wanna hear about getting beat, don't lose. I was a big Cam fan, but him not diving for that football is one of the worst moments I've seen in sports. It's Klitschko quitting with a hurt shoulder against someone half his size.

Has anyone seen Greg Olsen yet? Really surprised that Carolina couldn't find him much yesterday, especially given how well Gronk did against Denver. Olsen ain't Gronk but he's pretty damn good.

Strong words from a man who hasn't seen his own feet in 17 years.
He's got a point, though. It's very easy to act all arrogant, bombastic, and outwardly confident when everything is going well. But, when adversity hits, it's the true mark of a leader and a competitor. Brady was getting hit all game long and managed to still make plays in the 4th quarter. Newton got hit early and never recovered.

Well, like Brady, Newton's line was awful all game long, Oher and the tackles in particular.

Looking at the replay and the gif of the non-dive, it's like he got wrong-footed just when he was thinking about jumping on it. Awful optics, of course, but if we haven't learned to distrust optics by this point then we're even stupider than we thought.

FWIW, that brings to mind O.J. Simpson in the analyst booth (for MNF I believe) trashing Joe Theisman. The Juice said something like Theisman is Mr. Pep Rally when things are going well but just melts away when things get tough.

Wrong-footed? He's running straight for the ball and is close enough to dive. He pulled up.

Yeah, it was basically diving for a loose ball in basketball. Cam wanted no part of that scrum even though it eliminated his slim chance of winning a Super Bowl. If he goes after it aggressively, he probably secures the ball. There way no reason to hesitate. If you know you fumbled, you get the ball. If you think your arm was going forward, you get the ball. I think that sequence showed how much Denver owned him mentally. He was toast by that point.

It looked like he was afraid to get hit and didn't think he had a chance at the ball. Christ, he's 255 lbs he's as big as some of the defenders. That was a bad, bad look from Newton if you want to talk optics.

Gronk didn't do all that much until Ward and Stewart got hurt.

True but that was largely because Brady was getting flattened on every single dropback. Gronk had 6/88/1 in the first game before he got taken out.

Garbage. This is utter garbage. Optics. Nice one.

He saw the ball and chose not to go for it. It was a selfish and pretty lousy play considering it was the game on the line. It really isn't a defensible move in any context.

edit - and it's not unfair to call Cam out for always dancing and strutting when things are going well but then disappearing when it's a tough time. e.g. walking away from the press conference after the game. If you want to talk optics, that was very bad optics.

I could give a shit about the presser. Uttering bland pablum to the media doesn't show anything to me. He congratulated Manning on the field, gave him a big hug and smile. That's the reaction we'd all like to see in defeat.

I looked at the clip of the fumble a hundred times and I'll be damned if I know what's truly going on there. It's almost like the ball got closer to his feet and he got caught up thinking about running with it or something. It looks awful, but I'm not confident enough to label it one thing or another.

Another point to consider: Newton ran to the wrong tunnel at halftime, not long after he took a big hit on a completion. I wonder if he was a tad concussed by the end of the game.

On Sunday night, what we got was an over-the-hill, shitty player who had to be dragged to a title by a world-class defense … a player who was benched for ineffective play earlier this season and was reinstated to the starting lineup only because his replacement was equally ineffective.

And how did Peyton Manning celebrate this good fortune? By kissing fucking Papa John and openly shilling for Budweiser. The biggest, most wonderful moment at the end of a storied career, and he’s selling me shitty beer.

Fuck this guy.

I get everyone can see something different, but I have no clue what you're looking at. He's got a clear line on the fumble. He runs to it, slows down and then takes a half jump back. I know the perils of trying to read another man's mind, but this isn't the Duran no mas, he was clearly scared of jumping at that ball.

Most sportswriters and sports fans put excessive weight on the present moment. Manning's second ring certainly raises his legacy but in ten years or even two years no one will seriously be arguing Manning over Brady (unless Manning wins a third ring ...)

I saw that at first too, but then as I looked at it more it looked as if he was considering trying to pick it up and run with it, which would require him to bend down and grab it instead of jumping on it. And since the ball was close to his feet, he'd need to jump back a bit to get the leverage to bend down and get it. Of course he had about .00000001248 seconds to consider this in the heat of the action.

I could well be wrong here, no doubt.

Anything's possible, but I think that's a very generous interpretation. It looks like he pulls up and then jumps back out of danger. Going full bore or diving, he had the best line on the ball and the size to keep it in his possession.

I took a look again after reading these comments. You know what? I'm wrong. You're right, Marciano.

I just looked at the clip again. I had been focusing on Ware in the shot, but Cam bails when another defender comes barreling in from the left side, and only after that does he try to get the ball and try to pick it up. He didn't want to take a pop.

@MikeGarafolo Speaking of that next meaningful game, the Broncos have NE, Indy, and Car at home next season. Several good options for opening night.

NE at Denver for the opening game seems like a distinct possibility.
it will be indy so the nfl can worship manning some more so al and chis can have him in the booth for a hour

so much for "integrity of the game" NFL

From Super Bowl 50 comes a strange postscript that could have become a major problem for the NFL. Via TheBigLead.com, the wife of the game’s replay assistant attended the game as a fan of the Broncos.

Jimmy Oldham reportedly is a Denver-area resident. His wife donned a Broncos jersey for the game and posted a celebratory video to a public Facebook page.

A replay assistant’s potential impact on a given game is limited, especially where (as in this case) NFL V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino was in the booth. Still, it’s a bad look for the league — and it’s something that easily could have been avoided by appointing a replay assistant: (1) who doesn’t live in the Denver area; and (2) whose wife isn’t a Broncos fan.

Per TheBigLead.com, the NFL declined to respond to questions regarding officiating assignments in relation to residency.

During the officiating lockout of 2012, the NFL yanked side judge Brian Stropolo from a Saints-Panthers game due to his status as a rabid Saints fan. As former official Jim Dapoulos explained in the aftermath of the scandal, plenty of officials have rooting interests. Most are far more concerned about doing a good job and earning high marks for their work.

Still, with only one game being played that day, it would have made much more sense to give the assignment to someone else. And if the league believes it would have been unfair to not reward the replay assistant for a great season with a Super Bowl assignment despite where he lives, the league should have ensured that Mrs. Oldham exercised far more discretion regarding her desire to see the Broncos win the game.
