Here Are The 379 Companies Urging The Supreme Court To Support Same-Sex Marriage

I was wondering about putting this in V&N, but I'm frankly less interested in the politics of same-sex marriage here than I am in why a sports team would throw in on this.

The Patriots appear to be one of only three to do so. Is this a Kraft thing or what?

Sports teams are in there because this brief is specifically around why it is better for businesses if the Supreme Court makes same-sex marriage legal across the country. It's an interesting bit of politicking IMO but any support is worthwhile as far as I'm concerned.

Draw no negative inferences from sports teams apparently being lightly representated. Understand that these briefs require that each amicus party be identified in an early section of the brief. So that would be close to 400 descriptions. Even if each were one sentence long, you are talking about pages just listing who signed on before you get to the argument. At some point, enough is enough. They got two champs. Point made.

Seems like it. From Outsports:

"When I was in Massachusetts running MassEquality, Robert and Myra Kraft, the owners of the Patriots, signed on in support as individuals. This time, when we went back to Mr. Kraft, he was unequivocal in lending the support of the Patriots simply, he said, because it's the right thing to do.

Although the arrival of gay individuals in professional sports may not have quite the social impact that Jackie Robinson did, I'm glad to see the Pats leading the way on this one (at least indirectly).

The law firm that wrote the brief appears connected in some way with the Patriots and/or Patriots charities. They probably tried to sign up as many clients or contacts as they could if they had a reason to think they would be receptive. I wouldn't ge surprised if there were a number who said no, though, so this is a good thing. I choose to interpret it as meaning nothing less than the Patriots thought it was a good thing to be associated with. Kind of interesting there are no NBA and NHL teams, though it might simply mean that none were asked -- though that seems surprising.
