Stuart Scott and his cancer

In the early 2000's I used to film the high school football games for the town next to Bristol. Stuart used to show up for the Friday night games. His kids weren't in the high school. He said he was there just because he liked high school football. He'd walk along the sidelines with me while I filmed, talk to the kids, cheer them on, get them pumped up. There were only about 4 or 5 African American kids on the team, and at the time they were all Freshman, very shy, and rode the bench. It was neat seeing Stuart bond with those kids especially. They really looked up to him. At first they called him sir and were totally awestruck. After a couple games it was "Stuart", and by the end of the season they were like a little posse, joking around, having fun. Stuart was always dressed to the nines. Very professional, kind, courteous, and generous. Remembered my name a week later. Just a class act all the way around.

Not a good way to start my day. This evil has touched and taken someone we love in all of our lives at some point.  It makes those stories when someone is able to beat this devil on earth even more inspiring.  You fought the good fight Stuart. Grateful for the stories and the courage you showed.  I know it will help someone else. Tears of gratitude today.

So many wonderful tributes from so many on what a great man and Dad he was. 49 is way too young and cancer is a bitch. It was a life well lived. RIP.

This is very sad. I suspected he wasn't doing well when they did that tribute to him on Monday Night Football a few weeks back. It's clear his colleagues loved him. I am guessing Eisen had prepared for this somewhat (with this sort of thing, you always know when it's close), but was still incredibly difficult. Seems like he was a really great guy. RIP.

Eisen is doing the highlights in Scott's voice, with all his catch phrases.  Really good.

It would be great if someone can post that here.  Its pretty clear the guy had  a lot of fans amongst his coworkers as well as those he covered.  He apparently gave advice to guys like Chris Webber and Chris Carter about their broadcasting careers which is pretty cool.

My 1st job out of college was as a researcher on Stump the Schwab. As a kid trying to break into the business, to me Stu was larger than life. The 3 weeks of filming our season were amazing, Stu was everything people have said about him. He was fun, he was kind, pure energy and enthusiasm and love for life. 4 months later when I got my first job at ESPN, I saw him coming down the hall and he recognized me immediately and was so happy to see me as now colleague. That's how Stu always was with everyone.  I'll never forget him and Howie belting out Ebony and Ivory at the wrap party for Stump the Schwab.

If you any fan saw Stu out in public and gave him a shout, a boo-yah, or anything else, he'd give you a nice response no matter what.  He loved what he did.  If everyone in the world loved their work as much as Stu, and treated everyone the way Stu did, it would be a MUCH better place.

Thanks Freddy and thanks minischwab - your story is greatly appreciated.  Its nice to hear that the love people had for the guy was based on something genuine.  He died very young but it appears as if he wasn't cheated at life.

Too bad Sanders and Irvin wouldn't shut the flying fuck up and just let Eisen roll.

Cris and Keyshawn, these are tough NFL WR's, who went over the middle a thousand times taking hits from safeties in vulnerable and dangerous positions. But you have to pause before they start, and make sure you have a box of tissues in front you.

That was heartbreaking to watch. Fortunately they had ditka in there to breakup all the genuine heartfelt stuff. Ass couldn't even be bothered to know his age.

Plus he had to refer to crib notes to recall the keywords indicating how he'd remember his "good friend".

Then he gruffly throws in the classic "hey, we're all gonna die some day..."

My 13 year old son was a big fan.  I showed him the Rich Eisen piece yesterday and he was moved to tears.  I will have to show him the highlight package.

Keyshawn and CC were absolutely pitch perfect in their remarks.  It really speaks to what he represented in the evolution of the medium (and in contrast to what it has become in a sense).

In what had to be one of the toughest days of his life, Eisen had a really good day. Both pieces were awesome.

Man, he crushed it.

I thought perhaps Dan Patrick might be the one to remind folks about that sad chapter of ESPN's corporate idiocy and bigotry, but this morning he only spoke of it obtusely and briefly. Olbermann aired out the laundry the way it needed to be.

Here's Patrick's tribute:

Scott Van Pelt & Steve Levy also appeared on the DP Show to remember Stu. (I've tried to find a clip of SVP's remembrance from his own show today, but no dice. Too bad, because it was excellent.)
