Team statement: 'We are aware of the incident involving Steven. This is certainly a matter that the Red Sox take very seriously. It is my understanding that both local police and MLB are looking into this and for that reason, the club won’t have any further comment at this time.

Well, that's a hit to the team's pitching depth. If he was arrested a suspension is imminent. Of course, that's secondary. If he committed domestic violence, he needs to go through the criminal justice system and be punished accordingly. If or when he gets back on the field is ancillary.

Can you get arrested for a verbal altercation with no physical violence? Hard to believe the officers didn't just try to calm them down and move on.

Yes if you’re just loud in public, it’s Disturbing the Peace or Disorderly Conduct. If its a loud threat directed at someone, its assault. Involves family, then its domestic assault. Key is there doesn’t appear to be any battery.

“I’m going to punch you in the nose” = Assault
Punching someone in the nose = Battery
Saying 1, the doing 2 = A & B

Team statement includes "my understanding" phrase??? Apparently that is Rob's understanding, but a little more punctuation would help a lot.

If you've read much from Bradford or heard him speak you should know that grammar and punctuation aren't strong suits for him.

If it was a verbal dispute then he’s probably not looking at a suspension. If it turns out he’s full of it and hit her then he’s all done.

It’s important to note that post OJ, most departments enacted as policy the requirement that one of the parties to a domestic call was getting transported to jail for the night. Before OJ, cops had more discretion and heated arguments usually were handled by making sure the people were calmed down, then maybe checking back on the house later in the evening. So if it was just an argument that gave rise to a call, then someone was going in regardless of whether everyone was saying it was under control. So the report on this will tell us a great deal about the incident. But based on the statement from the family (not sure if its wife or parents, etc) its likely pretty minor.

Not expecting to find choke marks and bullet holes in the wall. He may still get suspended, but the amount of bail tells you its probably not a big deal. Bail doesn’t get much smaller than that.

Not here
I am very skeptical that a professional athlete, even one as relatively anonymous as Wright is going to get arrested at a private residence without fisticuffs but we shall see.

And if it's true that he was arrested without committing violence, bully for the arresting officer.

Can’t link it but Globe article says 2 charges.
Domestic assault
Prevention of a 911 call.
Each 2500 bail, total 5K.

So argument, she goes to call police, he takes phone out of her hand. I’m guessing he gets 5-10 games. Somewhere in all that I’m guessing there is some alcohol.

Guess so. Chapman shot a gun in anger but no physical assault , which I consider a form of assault (worse than verbal) although he was not charged (Florida) . MLB threw the book at him though.

Man, my father and mother both went at it pretty good verbally. Fortunately folks had more sense in those days

His wife just reduced the family income by a good chunk. Not judging her since I don't know if her fear was legitimate or not. Doubt that will help their future together.

Ah well, when it rains it pours. What a crappy December. Ohtani, Stanton and now this

This is appalling.

We don't get to talk about these issues like this any more. That's what people did in 'those days'.

You honestly think things were any better ‘in those days’? I’m sure many a member here can attest to Dad taking his belt off when they were a kid. I luckily cannot, but corporal punishment and domestic abuse haven’t exactly gotten worse.

And also yes, let’s equate domestic abuse to the Sox not getting players you wanted. You’re killing it lately.

People have arguments, they raise their voices. Sometimes they throw stuff (which Wright did not seem to do) . My Ma threw a bowl of spaghetti at my Dad during one argument. Nobody called 9/11. Life went on. Life can be tough sometimes, there is pressure and sometimes people get excited. But should a domestic argument without any physical abuse result in legal or employment discipline and loss of income? Not IMO.

Now as for this specific case, I already mentioned that I dont known what the situation is so cant judge one way or another. Maybe Wright has a history of abuse in which case the 9/11 call was perfectly justified and he should be suspended and charged. Maybe something else.

However I will say I thought when MLB introduced their policy on domestic abuse they were talking physical abuse. I cant believe anytime someone has an argument with their wife w/o a prior history of physical abuse that they risk suspension.

I recommend any young man who choses a MLB career to not marry till they retire

I cant be the only one that thought this was about the comedian
My first thought and it showed up as “Arrested for” on my mobile device. Figured it was another Hollywood groping/raping type deal. Lose lose, sucks all around. Putting aside the real life off field dimension, I’m glad there’s several months between now and spring training.

You admittedly know nothing about the incident, but state that his wife destroyed their finances and their future together... not judging her though!!1!1!!

Your comments in this thread are indeed completely appalling.

Why do you care about the family's finances? Not that it's of any consequence, but I'm sure the bank account will stay in decent shape. You made a crap post. Just own it and move on instead of doubling down.

Did your mother ever feel compelled to call 911, and was she prevented from doing so?

Granted, we don't know a lot, and initial reports are subject to significant change, but while he may not have physically committed battery (beyond perhaps ripping the phone out of her hand), it appears to have been more serious than just a yelling match where he called here stupid or something. The fact that he was arrested and booked (as opposed to just being taken into custody) tells me that he kept up his tirade well after the police arrived.

Chances are that even the assault charge will be reduced by the time this thing goes to court. But a suspension is not out of the question, and would very much be justified if the facts as currently reported hold true.

MLB was right to "throw the book" at Chapman.

Given what we know, Chapman got off easy. (Hint: It wasn't just that he shot off a gun in anger.) I'm thinking it might be a good idea to let the facts come out here before speculating on what kind of discipline, if any, will be faced by Wright.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but the optics on this would be absolutely terrible right now.
I agree. I changed my thought somewhat when it was reported he prevented the 911 call. If he ripped the phone from her hand that is a circumstance above just an argument. I can totally get why a professional athlete wouldn’t want this called in, but something elevated to the point where she felt like she needed to do that. I think he gets a short suspension if that’s the case.

Sad to hear this. I've followed him since getting his autograph at a AAA game. I've been skeptical of his prospects to come back before this news, and probabilities have likely nudged a bit further in the wrong direction now.

The very fact that his wife felt it necessary to call 911 is a pretty terrible sign. The whole thing does not look good for Wright, although I'm glad it appears his wife was not physically harmed.

One of the reasons we have such an appallingly high rate of physical violence in domestic situations, and why we have a terrifyingly high rate of murder in domestic situations is that we do a terrible job of taking preventative measures in smaller incidents leading up to those tragic endpoints.

There may be an over correction in moving to improve responses to these kinds of calls, but there is a difference between arrest and conviction, and if it leads to an overall improvement in how these situations play out (women are safer in general) I think it's worth some bumps in the road along the way.

Sorry for the V&N style post, but it seems relevant here.

I think it was interrupting/trying to prevent the 911 call that most likely got him arrested. They have all of that in tape, right? Kind of hard to make that disappear.

Could have been neighbor that called. We don't know.

Best thing now to do is release him from the Boston Red Sox.
Is it fair?
Don't know for him or his wife, but the Boston Red Sox don't need no distractions.
He must be cut immediately from the team.
Zero tolerance in these issues.
Plus does anyone really want to hear about this all year like Will Cordero?

Yes, cut him. Totally. Wait, that's insane at this juncture. This thread is swinging back and forth like crazy. Let's take a step back, wait for actual facts come to light. Then the Red Sox will hopefully make their decision based on facts instead of conjecture.

These domestics are tough. One of my good friends just got out of the academy in the past 2 years, works overnights and every day he basically tells me if his shift was good or bad and it all depends on whether or not he had a domestic call.

Some people are being callous about it "costing the family money" but I think that is relevant as to why this is such a hard problem, in a way you hurt the victim twice. She's hurt because she took a beating, but then if she stays (most that I'm aware of do), she is financially hurt (not her fault, the dudes fault, but she still is harmed).

"She took a beating..."? Where is that established?

I thought from Paul the best guess we have is they argued, and he took the phone away from her so she couldn't dial 911.
Yes, family statement, which seems to be authored by wife says he never raised his hand to anyone.
