Did someone from the team say there was no squeeze play on? If it could have been neither what is the other possibility of which you speak? The hitter did it on his own?

A safety squeeze is simply the runner from third takes off only after he sees the bunt successfully executed. (I would add and judges he has a chance to get in there safely). The play at the plate was actually fairly close.

Isn't a Safety exactly what happened? It's what I saw. I'd be a little surprised he did it on his own.

Are we complaining because Lyons did not mention the possibility it was done without a sign from the dugout/3B coach? What I am I missing?

There were two outs. I think most people use the term "squeeze" to indicate sacrifice situations, of which this was not one; in this case, the bunt must have been an attempt to get a hit... or he's an idiot who forgot how many outs there were.

If you don't think a squeeze bunt has to be a sacrifice, then Lyons was correct.

I don't. If the play goes to the plate and the runner from 3B is out; it's an FC for the bunter. Is it scored a SAC if they go to 1B and get the bunter? I don't actually know. Maybe someone does.

Minor issue, however. I was just curious what you were referring to.

The original discussion was a different play than the one you're referring to.  The play in question was Ross bunting with the bases loaded and 2 out in the 8th inning of the May 29th game vs. Atlanta. It was on the 1st pitch of the AB and was fouled off.  The reason there's almost no chance it was a squeeze play was that they have no need to get the runner at home with the slow running Ross up.  And even if they did go home, it's a much easier play than a typical squeeze because it's a force play, so they don't even have to worry about a tag.  I think Ross just saw the defense playing back and though he could sneak in a bunt hit.

I'm guessing you're talking about the Herrera bunt on May 31?  That definitely looked like a textbook safety squeeze.
