The Coney Island of my mind
I would not put too much stock in this for a few reasons.

Reports are about who "is under consideration" for coaching gigs are notorious as a way of currying favor. Any such "report" should be taken with a giant grain of salt. To which we add:

Woj's reporting around Ime has already been called into question; and

Would seem on the face to be a horrible business/basketball decision to bring him. The distraction would be immense, since both the Nets and Ime would be constantly faced with questions about what exactly transpired during his tenure in Boston to lead to the suspension. Though maybe Tsai is playing 3D chess and figures a distraction from the distraction of Kyrie is what the team needs.
This is kind of the opposite of "ethical."

The Celtics should absolutely demand compensation. Udoka is a very good coach, and having him run the Nets make the Nets a better team.

Looking at it from Brooklyn’s point of you, if Udoka can coach up the superstars on this team, does it really matter if they don’t get the 20th pic next year. Conversely, if they get a different coach that will put up with the circus, they might get the eighth pick, but have a disgruntled Kevin Durant who wants to leave.

I do like the idea of Udoka grabbing Kyrie by the neck in private, telling him to stop fucking up his money with Kylie’s bullshit. Coaches normally don’t go to war with their superstar players, but Kyrie has one foot out the door already. I have a feeling that Kevin Durant, who has other business interests besides basketball would love to have a strong coach that can keep Kyrie in check

I don’t really care if Brooklyn gives anything up for Ime, I think it’s a win for the Celtics to rid themselves of the headache and remove any uncertainty for Mazzulla who now knows for sure he’s the guy. My only hope is there is some type of agreement that prevents Ime from poaching any other assistants to bring with him.

That's where I think the Celtics are. The value of getting him out of house -- cleanly, quickly and permanently -- must outweigh the possible compensation. "You want him. We don't. Take him." Whether that's for the reasons McCann uses above, or something else, I think the post hoc conclusion has to be "the Celtics' brass thought it was worth it"

As a fan (i.e. non-owner) I would love to see the Cs get some compensation for Udoka. But it seems like the owners are just happy to have that headache off their hands, so they won't fight it.
As for the Nets... yikes. What a volatile, unlikable team. I would love to read through some articles from a couple years ago about how this was going to be the unstoppable juggernaut for years to come, but I feel like doing so would somehow jinx the Celtics. I am beginning to think that team is cursed.

I'm sure the Nets have done their due diligence with a thorough and deep-diving investigation into Ime Udoka in the last five minutes.
I mean the C's were friggin favored to win the Title and he did something bad enough to get suspended for the year right before training camp. Also, assuming this is a done deal, now that the Nets office knows what he did, how long until what happened gets leaked? A week?

Its probably a safe assumption that the Nets know exactly what happened with Udoka. The Celtics may well have shared information with them given the incentives to get out of Udoka's contract.

As others have noted in the Udoka suspension thread, its really remarkable that the public still doesn't know what transpired, especially given that at least some people in and around the league have the details.

One way or another, it should be fascinating to see a HC move from a team like last year’s Celtics move to a team as different from them as the Nets.

Also: This post needs more love:
The Nets ready to ink Ime while he's still under contract to the Celts is clearly tampering and dare I say, not kosher. Imo the Celts are entitled to their pound of Juniors Cheesecake or something.

The Nets are officially now the most detestable team in the NBA and I'm not sure there's a close second.
I'm trying to think of a more detestable team in the entire history of sports. Not coming up with one. The Yankees don't count, as they are their own category.

Try again. Kyrie's statement is actually coherent.

Agree with your earlier statement that "this feels gross" and with others wondering how Ime's seemingly hardass style works with Kyrie, Simmons, and Durant.

A few things seem pretty clearly true:

1. The Celtics had no interest in bringing Udoka back, regardless how it goes this year with Mazzulla

2. Udoka getting another job this quickly saves them a massive headache about potential legal/financial issues down the road

3. The Nets don't have anything particularly valuable as assets

The only reason to be hold up this move is if you think Udoka is going to turn the Nets into major contenders at the end of this potential Durant/Kyrie/Simmons window and you want him to go elsewhere.

I think Wyc is quite happy to say good riddance rather than battle over some mediocre pick.

Also...would love them to grab Nash as an assistant coach just for fun. He might not actually be a bad coach.... maybe impossible to tell with that squad.

It's hard to think of a team more dysfunctional and messed up than the present day Nets.

Maybe the early 70s A's and late 70s Yankees, but at least those teams won. This is a busted team that doesn't win.

Maybe we can grab a 2028 pick swap from them.

I googled for options, came up with this doozy:

“Referred to as the Jail Blazers by disgruntled viewers, the team featured Ruben Patterson (a registered sex offender), Zach Randolph (DUI and known for punching Patterson during practice), Damon Stoudamire (multiple marijuana charges, speeding while under the influence), Qyntel Woods (marijuana charge and arrested for participation in a dog fighting operation) and Shawn Kemp (cocaine and alcohol abuse).

The most classy displays were from Bonzi Wells, who said that the fans didn't matter to them, and Rasheed Wallace, who had the record for most technical fouls and threatened referee Tim Donaghy after a game.”

And if the Nets say no?

Udoka is still in purgatory with a bunch of looming headaches for Wyc to deal with.

If they don't want him back, I don't think stringing it along makes much sense.

One more contender:

“More arrests than wins was evidently the modus operandi of the 8-8 Bengals of 2006.

Chris Henry (R.I.P.) headlined the plethora of players who were arrested or suspended for their off-the-field activities.

The controversial, albeit talented wide receiver faced marijuana charges, speeding and drunken driving charges and was charged with providing alcohol to minors.

Linebacker Odell Thurman faced drug-test suspensions after he skipped a test, and drunken driving charges, which seemed to be a given on that team.

Frostee Rucker was charged with spousal abuse, A.J. Nicholson with burglary, Eric Steinbach with boating under the influence, Reggie McNeal with resisting arrest and drug possession and Deltha O'Neal with driving while intoxicated.

Matthias Askew was even tasered for allegedly refusing to move his car, which was supposedly parked illegally.

It was a sad, albeit baffling, time for Bengals fans.”

There were teams like those Jail Blazers that had some really bad dudes on it, but they weren’t really hated and booed wherever they went. This Nets team is more like the Pat Riley Knicks or Bad Boy Pistons. You want to see the team bus drive off a cliff.

In terms of unlikability, the 86 Mets have to be high.
They had legit criminals in Dykstra, Kevin Mitchell
Shameless self-promoter Gary "Camera" Carter
Slimy Characters like Keith Hernandez
annoying/assholes Backman, Ray Knight,
reckless druggies Doc and Strawberry
all wrapped up in the hyperbole of the NY media.

Sean Marks said Nets have talked to the ADL and continue to talk with Kyrie Irving. Said there's no place for hate speech. "I'm certainly not proud of the situation we find ourselves in," Marks said. "I'd like to turn ESPN or the TV not find you talking about us in that manner."
Uh... Dude... the issue isnt the coverage of the tweets but the tweets themselves....

Kyrie Irving won't talk to the media today after not speaking to the media after last night's Nets game. Sean Marks said it's because he wants to let Irving "simmer down" and not create more "fuss." He said Irving's last media session "didn't go well."
and who's fault is that?

It's not a financial thing, it's a business competitive issue. If my rival wants my million dollar asset to make their multi billion dollar investment perform better, they should be prepared to pay for it. Just business As for the concern dirty laundry will be aired, too late for that.
If your million dollar asset is a person who has devalued his worth to you by taking actions that led you to suspend him for a year and give him no assurances of eventual reinstatement, and you would like him to quietly walk away rather than suing you and blasting your organization in the press. And you work in a league where you have a certain image to maintain to mutiple constituencies (analogous to fans, players, other owners)
I wonder if the Celtics can get a full legal release from Ime in return for allowing him to leave without receiving compensation?
It seem obvious that the Celtics will want some sort of negotiated exit along these lines.

Obviously lots of fallout and criticism on report C's unlikely to ask for anything in return. But if they're having any second thoughts as a result, I would think the C's could still change their mind on this compensation part.

Also wondering how women (especially) in one of the most liberal progressive cities in the U.S. will feel about Udoka to the Nets. Could there be protests for example?

Given what we know now about Donaghy, is that actually a negative for Wallace?
Heh, I was just cutting and pasting, but yes, Rasheed Wallace was a big asshole on the court, even if it's because he was often right a la John McEnroe.

Why isn’t Wyc/Brad Asking
For a draft pick in compensation?

Oh yeah, they don’t have any

DayRon Sharpe maybe with Rob out?
Markieff? TJ Warren?
Claxton is probably too much though
Just for fun...

The Nets 1st rounder this year is somewhat valuable...they basically get the 2nd best of their pick, the Rockets pick & the 76ers pick. Throw another swap on that with the Celtics & that will be a fun 4-way situation...except the Celtics don't have their own 1st so this would have to be a 3-way IME trade with a team that does so lol

They also have a top 8 protected 76ers 1st in '27, the worst of the 2nds of Nets/Hawks/Charlotte this year, a '25 Heat 2nd rounder, their own '26, '28 & '29 2nds, & their own '29 1st & can pick swap their '28 1st - allowing us to make that a 3-way swap bonanza with the Spurs having swap rights to our 1st already (side note - the Celtics have 3 other teams 2nds this year & then no other 2nds until their own '29 2nd).

I would 100% take the Nets '26 2nd or similar for IME.

So Tsai is letting someone else litigate this?
I thought that it was six kids with seven women, but the decade is a bit of a blur for me too.
I was never very good at math. Six goes into seven how many times?

Wow they continued and finished due diligence in 23 min?!

Shams is a hoot.
If this is the amount of diligence the Nets believe is due for major decisions, it explains a lot.

I mean, for a decision like this that could affect the direction of the franchise for the next decade, you really should give the Magic 8-Ball a best-of-seven-shakes. That gives you 22 minutes to go to Chick-fil-a across the street.*

*There really is a Chick-fil-a across the street.

An insistence on getting a pick for the rights to Udoka is foolish. Get him and his contract out of there without getting into a potentially ugly lawsuit.

Sometimes it’s ok not to try to squeeze every drop of value if it means ensuring you will get what you really want, and quickly. What’s the point of a protracted negotiation to wrangle a second rounder or something?
