This is awesome news. My take is it means they view Mayo as the next HC. I was also worried they would give the offensive coaches another year to grow into their roles. This is the most exciting thing that has happened with this team in a while.

Mixed emotions on Mayo. I certainly don't mind him staying, and nothing against him, but Steve Belichick has done an adequate enough job the last couple years, and with the number of holes we have I'd just as soon as get the 2 3rd round picks for Meyo leaving.

what do you give Mayo though?
He's probably not getting a HC job (though outside shot) but are you making him the D-Coordinator? If so what do you do with Steve? I guess maybe you keep him in a generic assistant role but calling plays? Can't think of another team that has a Coordinator who doesn't call plays except when the head coach is playcaller.

Bill obviously has a love of special teams. Is Special Teams Coordinator a promotion for Steve? Could be a solution, if so.

Patriots to extend Jerod Mayo; Will begin interviewing for an offensive coordinator
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots and Head Coach Bill Belichick have begun contract extension discussions with Jerod Mayo that would keep him with the team long-term. In addition, the team will begin interviewing for offensive coordinator candidates beginning next week.
the headline and body of the Press release say two different things...

Steve should leave and try to establish himself somewhere away from his dad. Would be the best thing for his career.
maybe, but it would almost certainly be bad for the Patriots.

Defensive playcaller is likely better than ST and a coordinator title, also.... he's a really good defensive playcaller, not sure moving him to accomodate Mayo who is supposedly really good in the meetings but doesn't call plays is a net positive.

His Dad is only here for 3-4 years most likely. Would be hard to give those years up. He can always establish himself separately when Bill leaves.

I think this is really underselling it. As far as I can tell, Steve Belichick has done an excellent job as the lead defensive coach -- probably in 2021, and definitely in 2022. Not only has the Defense's performance been outstanding, against bad teams and good, but the unit has looked well organized and been opportunistic. Moreover, a number of players have shown substantial improvement -- top of my head Bentley, Uche, Jennings, Duggar, Jon Jones.

I'd be bummed to lose Stevie B. Don't mean that as a judgment about Mayo, but hoping there's a way they can both have a role.

I think it's very easy to envision a scenario in which they give Mayo the DC title but don't really change the inner workings of his and Steve's responsibilities. Of course, that would hamper Steve's career, but maybe he takes one for the team here. I really like Steve and feel like were it not for the fact that he's Bill's son other teams would have probably called with DC/HC openings at this point (then again, he's likely not calling defensive plays were it not for his dad).

How do we know how much of the defense's excellence to attribute to Steve, how much to Mayo (and others), and how much to HOF defensive mind Bill overseeing it all?

We don't know how much of it is Steve and how much is Mayo, but Bill has overseen some pretty bad and mediocre defenses over the years and they've been on arguably their best 4 year run by DVOA since both have been in charge of the defense. And I don't think the personnel has been all that great either.

Steve is only 35 at this point, so he certainly has time to stick around the rest of BB's career then find his own path. Then Steve will prove to himself and others of his defensive coordinator abilities and subsequently head coaching abilities if he is successful.

He seems very capable, and I hope he becomes the defensive coordinator if JMayo becomes the Assistant Head Coach. I have never heard really one thing about Brian Belichick. Have any of you?
Not much, he seems to have been put on the same track as Stephen, 4 years as a generalized assistant then a position coach spot in the secondary (safeties) been there 3 years, Stephen was in the secondary for 4 years when he moved to LB and took over playcalling.
