What does the 2nd sentence mean? I don't get it. It's non-sensical

"There hasn't been any trade traction around the league, because the Patriots didn't do enough to shore up the CB position."

I think it's supposed to mean we haven't been aggressively shopping Gilmore because we don't have enough depth behind him. Poorly written though.

It sounds like an agent-leak, stressing Gilmore's value to the Patriots. Probably true, but it's still nonsense. If they decide to deal him, the "traction" will establish itself immediately

And that’s not even true either, unless the standard for ‘shoring up’ the depth at the position is ‘have another shutdown corner behind him.’ There are, what, 3 guys at his position at that level? Gilmore can’t be replaced, and I don’t think the Pats want to trade him no matter how many above average/good but not great corners they have behind him.

Correct. It's not like a depth chart of Jackson / Jones / Mills would be a complete disaster. Probably middle of the pack NFL, honestly.

Agreed. But why fuck with something good. Hammer out some cash to keep him happy another year. Enjoy depth at a really important position. Win win.

Unless the thinking is that with the improvements to the front seven, they'll get more pressure on QBs and can get by w/o him.

In the end, this is going to go the way it always go: If they can come together on the money figure the Patriots are comfortable with, he'll stay. If not, the countdown begins.

I think it ends up the Brady route, a phony additional year with some extra money added, then Gilly Lock walks as a free agent - hopefully as part of the comp pick formula.

Sorry but the premise of the 2nd sentence feels flawed.

If the Pats didn't intend to keep him, they 100% WOULD have used some of that massive offseason spend to adding another CB. It's not like they couldnt find one so now are stuck keeping him.

So, you're thinking Jalen Mills will only be a safety?

The Pats still have over $12M in cap space if Spotrac is to be believed, and there are still probably some ways to free up additional space. I believe Bill likes to have about $6-7M to play with when the season begins for injury replacements, etc. So there's probably an opportunity for a one time bonus payout combined with some NLTBE bonuses. Or the void year maneuver to push some cap hit into next year.

But there are limits; if Gilmore wants $20M more to play this season, he's getting traded.

Sounds like he’s prepping to hopefully get himself on PUP so he isn’t fined for missing preseason. I’m not holding out, I’m hurt! But when I’m healthy pay me. Good strategy.

If $12-13m total for the year gets it done let’s do this and move on.

Granted, Gilmore is now underpaid, but isn't his salary $7 mill this year because he was given an advance of $5 mill from it LAST YEAR?
Yes but I doubt Gilmore and his agent care about last year now. They're focused with him being paid market value this year, as they should. I'm also fairly certain BB knew Gilmore would never play for just $7 mill this year when they re-worked the deal last year. Seems like this is all just posturing and they'll hammer something out around the time training camp begins or slightly afterwards.

I don't think the Pats will sign a deal until he's going full speed in practices. If he isn't able/willing to do that on the field without a new deal, this might be stuck for a good spell.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gilmore gets a bunch of incentives added to his deal -- that was what BB did with Brady and Gronk their last few years.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's what is offered. Whether he takes it is another matter. Just because Brady and Gronk did so, doesn't mean he will.

True, but if they're tied to counting stats - games, plays, passes defensed, etc. - he could be leaving quite a lot of dough on the table if he sits until week 8

It's possible that this played a small role in the Cam decision. Without Gilmore lifting that secondary, it's hard to imagine a run-heavy Cam-led O scores enough to compete.

Man, that’s a pretty attenuated link to draw without any reporting to support it. Isn’t the goal to score as many points as efficiently as possible? Do we think Bill has a different goal?

Hell, Gilmore could have gone down Week 2 with a blown ACL. Are we to infer that Bill would be more likely to make a QB change to get Newton out there?

I don’t buy that that’s a real consideration. Beetle needs to generate calls and fill four hours a day so he’s gonna find tertiary (and whatever is lower than tertiary) factors to speculate about and when pushed say ‘I’m not saying I KNOW this, but I’m just saying it COULD be something Belichick considered.’

Anyone know the deal with why the injury is taking so long? I thought the consensus was that he might not be ready for the start of camp, but this seems like a surprise to me that he needs at least another 6 weeks (8 weeks really) into the regular season.

RapSheet claims he wouldn't have been ready until "week 3 or 4." But now instead he's out until Week 7 at the earliest due to being placed on the PUP. I wonder what else is at play here.

Couldn’t it be as simple as, if they think he won’t be back until Week 3 or 4, they are willing to trade a few more games where he can’t play for an extra roster spot now?

They would risk losing a guy they’ll need for the first month if they tried to put him on the 53-man and then to IR, where he would miss a minimum of three weeks anyways.

History tells us there will be guys who make the initial 53 man who don't last a month anyway. Getting the best player on the team back three weeks earlier is a better use of a roster spot than upgrading a fringe back of the roster guy. Keeping Gilmore on PUP suggests to me that either he's not going to be healthy earlier or he won't play / practice earlier.

ESPN has:

Don't be surprised if ... the Saints end up with Stephon Gilmore after all.

What I'm hearing: As of this past week, the Patriots were still open to the idea of trading Gilmore, who now has to miss the first six weeks on the physically unable to perform list. Gilmore is known to be unhappy with his contract, which is up after the season. While there was optimism a month or so ago that he and the Patriots would get something worked out, they still have not.
Is that really something that might be in the works? Has anyone actually heard rumors about this, or are they just completely making things up?

The Saints, who have like 9M in cap space, are gonna trade what it takes (ie, at least a third since the Pats would likely stand to get a fourth as a comp pick and could use 11 games out of Gilmore this year to boot.) for 11 games of Gilmore and/or extend him even though he is entering his early 30s at a position where outside corners fall of a cliff around that age? And this guy is the only one who has it? Sounds like he’s full of shit to me or getting used.

Gilmore is still getting his $7+ million, right, even though he's out for 6 games? BB says, "There's your contract bump for 2021."

The Gilmore contract situation is complicated by him coming off of surgery. I think the Patriots were holding out on renegotiating because he hasn't appeared in camp and proven that he is good to go.

As well they should, right? He's currently under contract and is not healthy. There is zero reason to throw more money at him until he shows that he's ready to play.

Nobody is trading for Gilmore now; the ESPN intern that wrote about that possibility doesn't have a clue.
