If Quintin Berry makes the Orioles, do the Sox give him his ring on Opening Day in Baltimore?

I have a stupid spring training game broadcast question.

I'm switching from MLB Extra Innings to MLB.TV this year. If I have the regional sports network package on DirecTV, am I going to get the spring training broadcasts, or are they going to be blacked out?

I only ask so I know when I need to sign up.

Unless spring training costs extra, I would sign up now. I've been a MLB.tv subscriber for 10 years, the only games that are blacked out are those that are available on broadcast or cable in your local market. They only know to black you out based on the location of your ip address, not what channels you are subscribed to.

For instance, I'm in the DC market and when playing the O's I know I have to watch on MASN and endure Gary Thorne because I'll be blacked out on MLB.tv.

If your question was more about the DirecTV sports pak being blacked out, I had that too for a few years and NESN always was blacked out for me during games, but I honestly don't remember about spring training. Having a MLB.tv sub won't in any way affect this.

I highly recommend MLB.tv to anyone on the fence.

I've always been able to watch NESN spring training games with only the Directv sports pack in Los Angeles. During the season I also watch pre and post game coverage. I now use Appletv and MLB.TV for the regular season game broadcast.

FYI this year I was a little peaved about the 13.99 a month charge for the sports pack, called them up to see if I could get a discount and got 5 bucks off for 6 months which should cover the whole season.

Thanks, this is exactly what I wanted to know. I am also peeved with the 13.99 and will be dropping it as soon as the Hockey East season is over.

They won't give it to him. He'll have to steal it.

That's good news.  Hopefully he enjoys playing first base at Pawtucket this season and rediscovers his power stroke.  Have to believe that Butler and Vazquez are going to get the majority of the games behind the plate in Pawtucket.

No blackouts on ST games, I believe.

The full quote. “At this point, we would have no hesitation to put him at first base,” Farrell said. “That’s the kind of work he’s done there and how quickly he’s caught on. It’s not just in terms of fielding a ground ball. It’s the nuances of the position. He’s a smart guy and has got great aptitude.”

In between the lines here lies a coin with two sides. One says "give as many innings to CV as possible." The other says "we have little to no faith in RL's ability to play a mlb quality catcher." I assume the first side weighs more.

Word that Nap oli was warming up pitchers between innings in the college games, something he didn't do last year, combined with the likelihood that Carp will outhit Piersynski and Ross by at least 100 OPS points even if neither of them has a significant age-related decline is at least a non-zero probability of being an interesting contingency planning method for a team that is relying significantly on two rookies and a still-green 3Bman to be significant offensive contributors.   "Napoli catches a few games" is in a box that is labeled "Break in Case of Offensive Crack-up"

I think it would be more in case he was needed to be an emergency 3rd catcher, now that they are less concerned about his hip holding up. If both catchers are hurt in-game (not too unlikely given their age and Ross's concussion history) I'd rather have Napoli catching than Pedroia. But I don't want Nap catching just to get Carp's bat in the lineup, especially when AJ and Ross aren't zeroes at the plate.

The wife and I have tickets to today's game at Hammond Stadium vs the Twins and tomorrow's game at Jet Blue vs the Orioles. In addition to this weekend, we have tickets to see the Rays @ Sox at Jet Blue on March 23 and the Twins @ Sox at Jet Blue on March 29. Shaping up to be a fun month!

I wonder if the Sox plan on using Napoli at catcher during NL interleague games to try and keep both he and Ortiz in the lineup for an extra game or two. Maybe he catches the first game of a three game set, while Ortiz is at first. Then he gets the middle game off, then Ortiz gets the third game off. Keeps them both fresh and adds at least one game per series with the best hitters in the lineup.

I believe the Sox made it apparent last year that even if Salty and Ross went down in a game they still wouldn't put Nap behind the plate. Can't find the link. I don't see why that would change.
Maybe the hip problem being a year in the rear view mirror and they consider Nap catching not a risk to it anymore?

The hip "problem" wasn't an injury, though.  It's a degenerative condition which by definition isn't going to get better with time.  Just because he is asymptomatic (and he has been his whole life from what I understand) doesn't mean he's out of the woods.  If catching were considered a risk last year, it's still a risk now.

Two extra base hits and a hit by pitch. We're a walk away from the prototypical Webster start.

EDIT: And there it is, he walks a run in.

Now that concern over his hip is somewhat alleviated it seems a prudent move to have Napoli in a position to catch a few games, especially when you have a 37 yo backup with concussion history and a 37 yo starter at the position, and a young guy in Lavarnway that Farrell did not seem to have much faith in last year.

Concern about the offense could be a part of it too, but I think its probably more of a secondary concern.

Nah, it's spring training so your emergency 3rd catcher gets reaclimated with some position reps in a non-game setting.......similar to WMB taking grounders at 2nd. Nothing at all to see here imo.

The way he receives that ball and gets rid of it is first rate.  That was a great pitch to nail a runner with, but damn, it was gone on it's way to 2nd base almost instantly.

RT @brianmacp Jake Peavy cut his left finger with a fishing knife. He won't pitch at Bradenton on Monday as scheduled.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Manager John Farrell revealed that pitcher Jake Peavy suffered a laceration of the left index finger during a household accident that will keep him out a minimum of three days.
According to Farrell, Peavy, who was scheduled to start Wednesday in Bradenton, Fla., against the Pirates, cut his finger with a fishing knife while trying to cut something.
Farrell said it could have been much worse.
"He was at home when it took place and he trying to cut through something, and when it gave way, it almost cut through his finger," Farrell said.
"I don't know how many (stitches). He had a procedure today to make sure there was no infection of any kind and to clean it out. He's idle for the next three days," Farrell said.
Farrell said that Peavy's timetable to start the season may not be affected if he gets back on his throwing program soon. He missed time early when he was hit with a ball and suffered an irritation to his right ring finger. He returned from that with no problem.
Farrell said Peavy, who doesn't have very good eyesight, could be fit with a padding on his glove hand.
Brandon Workman will replace him vs. Pittsburgh.
"This was a freak one," Farrell said. "Honestly, he avoided some serious injury with what took place."

Thanks. Not sure if I'm more excited that it was the young 'un or if I would have been happier to learn that it was Pierzynsky with the rocket launcher, but absolutely, that was an amazing throw, and if he can hit at all, his work behind the plate will be something to watch.
