That's what happens after a team/person is caught breaking the rules.
It's clearly not since it doesn't to Tomlin who's openly broken the rules before. Same for Rex Ryan and the New York Jets.

I'm very curious to hear Tomlin's next presser.  Will Mr. Tough Guy say the media twisted his words, and it's not a big deal, or will he double down on his whining and complaining.

NFL investigating Steelers' assistant coach for allegedly assaulting a Patriots' fan Thursday night: http://es.pn/1M1XD72

NFL security is investigating Pittsburgh Steelers tight ends coach James Daniel for allegedly assaulting and verbally accosting a New England Patriots fan on the way to the locker room before halftime, according to league sources.
A league official confirmed the NFL is aware of the incident and is looking into it. A Steelers spokesman said NFL security has informed them about the incident and the team is also investigating.
The incident in question occurred before and after halftime. Daniel, who was on his way to the Steelers' locker room, was seen allegedly kicking a Patriots fan in the back of his leg and yelling at the fan in front of witnesses.
By the time Daniel returned to the coaching booth after halftime, police and NFL security were waiting for him. Once the coach was identified by witnesses, and police approached him about controlling his behavior, Daniel began shouting at the police officer, according to witnesses.
NFL security, which did not witness the exchange with police, afterward interviewed Daniel about the entire incident, according to sources.

Those Amy Trask tweets are interesting. IMO, concussions aside, the NFL faces a big problem by not discouraging snitching and hearsay amongst teams. The Pats are on the bleeding edge of this, but how is the "integrity of the gamec)" served by all the constant bitching about this stuff? The commish should be the first one to calm everyone down, tell teams to STFU, and handle any true issues. Unfortunately, Goddell has proven incapable of managing the media, an inability to get his own staff to keep their mouths shut, and blatantly incompetent at dealing with any actual investigations.

You get a knife, we get a gun.  You get investigators, we get a judge.  You get reporters, we get the cops.  Sorry, Rog, but Belichick is UNTOUCHABLE as long as McCluskey's on our payroll.

It's a Pats fan...everyone will be sympathetic to the coach.  "The guy probably deserved it.  They're all just a bunch of bandwagon blowhards up there.  Serves him right."

Clown show. I'll bet the coup plotters have Buddy Leroux and Dick O'Connell lined up to take over the league.
The NFL already has Bozo the Commissioner and Gríma Kensil in charge, it's tough to go down from there.

With 9 days before the next game, BB can take 20 minutes to talk about this stuff. ("That's why he cheated on Thursday!! Because he knew the blowback wouldn't interfere with game prep for 9/19!!")

At this point I think every new allegation actually starts to help the Pats, by showing just how inane they all are collectively.  Anything "real" about the Pats cheating in Spygate - which was not a big deal to me, but certainly the most serious of the 'gates - was brought into sharper focus with the deflation charade.  But now that that's been swatted away, Spygate re-hashed, people talking about bugs and team-sheet stealing and headsets... my sense is that it's staring to have the opposite effect.  It's starting to all blur together into the work of a "hater culture" which in a strange way exonerates the Pats because it shows how much of the impetus for this stuff comes not from their own actions, but from how desperate others are.  If there's a new mini allegation every week from here on out, I think things will eventually settle into a stasis mode - "everybody's out to get us" stops sounding like a paranoid excuse and becomes an accurate way to describe the atmosphere around the team.  Eventually it'll just be ", sure, the Pats cheated, buddy.  That's why you lost by 40. Cool story."

One thing I like about this stuff is that the league actually now has to deal with the monster that it helped create.

I suppose in the end they can just throw the Patriots under the bus again, but now it's actually blowing back onto the league.  The ESPN piece, notwithstanding some of the shrill arguments that it was fed to ESPN by the league itself, actually tried to implicate the league in covering for the Patriots, and of course the crazies are out claiming the same nonsense with respect to the league's statement that it controls the headsets.  People are very invested in the "Patriots are cheaters" dogma, and as we saw last night, it's reached the point where they simply will work any piece of information they can into the narrative.  And it's not just the crazies -- the Steelers themselves are suggesting that some mastermind was sitting there with a magical jamming box turning it off and on while the NFL people approached the Patriots' sideline.

The narrative is not going away.  People's investment in it is not going to diminish.  People prefer to believe crazy shit instead of believing their team lost.  Just look at the "refs are out to get us" nonsense every time a team loses a close game -- even we're not above having a significant number of people who believe the league is telling refs how to call games after close loses and we're one of the most balanced message boards on the internet.  The point is that at some points it's going to become necessary for the league itself to take shrapnel so that the narrative can continue, because some of the new "incidents" that get "discovered" are going to necessarily implicate the league in order for them to work.  They really will have nobody to blame but themselves.

It wouldn't be so much of an issue if people didn't harbor the truly bizarre idea that the Pats got off easy for Cameraplacementgate. In the eyes of the masses, if you aren't hammering the Pats you are protecting them for shady reasons. No in between, because people are fucking idiots but Goodell listens to them because he's also an idiot. So the minute he opens his mouth and says nothing to see here it's actually because there is so much to hide that it would bring down the entire history of the league...or something. The narrative is beyond containment until Belichick is long gone and the Patriots suck again.

It would be a truly great move if Goodell made a no-bullshit, spin-free, non-mealymouthed public statement along the lines of people all over the league (himself included) need to grow up and that losing and winning with grace are basic tenets of the integrity of sport. Of course the man is incapable of such a thing so whatever, let's have an investigation.

Does this mean Pitt send their 1st round pick to us? Actual a&b by a coach has to be worse than alleged general awareness by a player of a ball possibly being underinflated?

This is how I'm starting to feel.

I hope more and more stuff comes out and gets complained about that goes unsubstantiated. It'll add to the mystique, but also people will be tired of hearing about it and only the lowest level fans will still believe it.

If this occurred during the time of the Patriots of my youth, it would be seen as an indication of what a joke of a franchise New England is. "Hahaha, look at those losers, they can't even get their headsets working properly. Hahaha."

But instead it occurs now, when the Patriots are a dynasty not only for the current time, but could soon lay claim to the greatest dynasty ever. So now the claim is "look at those cheaters, the only reason they win so much is because they cheat. Whine whine whine."

Given the two narratives, I like the latter a helluva lot more than the former.

That, in essence, sums up this organization.

A Steelers coach assaults a fan during a game, and that's not the headline afterwards?

Insane.

I know it has been mentioned, but could you even imagine if this had been Belichick? Is there any possible way that it would have NOT resulted in him being banished from the league for life? I seriously think he would have gotten a lifetime ban.

Interesting piece this morning from USA Today (Mike Foss) on exactly this subject:

For nine years, Roger Goodell has stood at countless podiums and sternly furrowed his brow while discussing the importance of protecting the integrity of the game. He has dealt harsh punishments for a variety of transgressions in the name of protecting the integrity of the game. Deflategate, we were asked to believe, wasn’t about the air pressure of a football, it was about the integrity.
Now, NFL teams are brashly accusing other NFL teams of underhanded methods publicly. Players are saying it and coaches are saying it. Organizations are comfortable with calling out other organizations – their business partners – for the entire world to see and tweet and share at will.
How does the commissioner feel about the integrity of the NFL this morning?

That’s where this thing gets really bizarre. Is there a coup in the works? I don’t know. But a lot of nervous people at the league office, a lot of people putting potential plans into motion aimed at advancing their own interests or protecting themselves.”

Wow, wasn't that one of the tin foil hat narratives when the ESPN story came out?

The absurd through-the-looking glass end game is that the teams who "really" feel like they've been cheated will start getting pisssed at all the fake nouveau patriot-cheating victimhood newbies who are "ruining it for the rest of us."

A long time ago (after Spygate but years before Deflategate) I read a great article that essentially said the blame for all of these cheating rumors can be squarely laid at the feet of ROG, because a strong commish would have slapped the tattle-tale babies on their asses and sent them packing. Instead it's only gotten worse.
