So I gotta say, I absolutely LOVE the 2022 Clearly Authentic 1955 re-images. When I first saw this card, I immediately fell in love and added it to the personal collection:

View attachment 60349

I love that card SO much. Pedro's amazing smile, a perfect action shot on the right, and a bright blue auto. Of course I researched the other Sox who have these 1955s and got them promptly added (Fisk, Nomar, Boggs; Papi hasn't popped up anywhere that I've seen yet). I also grabbed an Eck (A's), and will add a Rickey Henderson and a few others. Honestly, they are outstanding cards. This year also has a 1987 re-imaging, but honestly that doesn't do much for me. I didn't really like those cards when they came out when I was 13.

Of course this led me to check the 2021, 2022, 2019, and 2018 lines...and they all have re-images from past Topps sets. The 1954s from the 2021 sets are pretty damn nice and I will be adding the Sox and possibly a couple others. I also like a couple of the 1986s from the 2021 line and have already snagged a Xander.

I know people's opinions on acetate cards are pretty varied, and indeed acetate cards are fragile as hell and who knows how the autographs will hold up over time. BUT...man. Right now they are SO beautiful.

After going through my collection over the past few weeks and sorting, cleaning, etc...I've come to the conclusion that I want to somewhat limit myself and focus a bit more on quality. I think going forward, I'm going to try to collect only one single "important" card, and one single autographed card, for non-Sox stars. So for example I'd keep a Mark McGwire 1985 Topps USA Baseball card, and one of the 1955 re-imaged 2022 autographed card. Everything else doesn't matter, just common city, and I'd obviously keep collecting the cards with the cool pictures and whatever. As for Red Sox, I'll do it similarly and get one good important and one good auto for each, but won't necessarily shy away from buying anything Sox related because I gotta be honest, I see a cool Sox card I gotta have it. I try to get the cheapest version possible each time, but if that card has three on-card autos what can I do, ya know???

Lastly, some folks have mentioned wanting to do another break. I know it's been a few months, but I'm assuming those people would still be in. I'm in and I'd go a step further and consider hosting the break. I've never done it, but it's something I've always wanted to do. I have the technical setup ready to go, and I have a friend who is a HUGE collector (I rode with him to the card show I bought the Stadium Club box from this past weekend) and would love to help. I know we had PE host in the past, but it seems he's been offline for a while. Hopefully everything's OK on his end of course! But yea, I'd be down for getting a case of Stadium Club or whatever and SoSH that mutha out.
That is an absolutely gorgeous card - I may be spending some of my morning on ebay. Pedro is my favorite and I was not aware of this card until today.

Also, congrats on the Trout auto. Glad to see some of you are having luck with the 2022 stadium club product. I was pretty pissed after my purchase, but the itch remains. I am looking forward to the 2023 series 1 release next month (not holding my breath), for the 1988 Topps anniversary cards alone. I may go all retail this time to see how I fare as opposed to hobby/jumbo.

I have one of these. It is even better looking in person. Clearly authentic are my favorite modern cards as well. They are really well done.

To boot I picked this Pedro up for $67 on ebay one night. Sometimes you can get really lucky on ebay. Not usually with Pedro as he definitely has people who buy up his stuff.

AMAZING. eBay can be a real pain sometimes, but then you hit gold like that and makes it all worth it haha.

I cracked my first BGS 9.5 and sent it to PSA last week. It was definitely nerve-wracking, it's the most valuable card I own and there was a large value difference bewteen a PSA 9 and PSA 10, but the delta between a 9.5 and 10 was much larger than a 9.5 and 9, so I had to take the risk. I figured it was about a 50-50 shot. Long and short of it, I ended up getting the 10! Shipping was a bit of an adventure, with the weather issues, but everything arrived safely yesterday. I'd strongly suggest anyone who has a 9.5 and is considering it take the risk, unless there's a clear issue with the card that will DQ it from a 10.

It's a legit card if TCDB is to be believed - the DOB element is a known error card for DOB

1993-94 Topps #23 Michael Jordan | Trading Card Database (tcdb.com)

I am assuming it was a tabling error. Like Rebounds increasing by a round number each year (50 every year until 92-93), card makers have never really been known for their proofreading.

On @Ed Hillel 's point, I've seen the crossover game getting more play. It seems PSA is a bit softer on grading then other parties and might round up the .5s, which can mean a ton. You may not even need to crack it now - a user on the Reddit baseballcards forum sent it in slab and all for a crossover from SGC and they did it.

They will, but I think there’s a mental impact on the grader if it comes in another grading company’s slab in a “lower” grade, so I always do it myself where possible.

I found a set of these when unpacking

https://www.ebay.com/itm/255360852410

couldn’t find if they have sold as a set, are they even worth the $120?
My instinct is it’s not worth $120. Most sets printed at that time aren’t. Most sets of anything post 1970s aren’t worth anything unless there’s some chase rookie with the possibility of a high grade and the box is unopened. Even then those players are basically Rickey Henderson and Mike Trout.

That said it’s a very niche product, probably a very low print run, and all it takes is one person to want it and it is worth $120.

It’s the kind of thing you can put on ebay for that price and just see what happens. Maybe some Thursday morning 7 months from now some buys it now.

You just never know.

Yes! At the small card show I went to this past weekend, one of the dealers had a million cards graded by some no-name company in some awful slabs. Prolly one he owns, like your LCS owner. I barely can stand Beckett and SGC, as I'm a PSA guy normally. These randos are turrible.

This makes me wonder if anyone is out there counterfeiting Becket/PSA slabs. I see there is a bar code, which I assume corresponds with a registration number which can be looked up. But even if that's the case, then presumably the counterfeiter could look up a graded card and copy a registration number.

eBay is/has been pushing their authentication services for sellers pretty hard for a while, so I'm assuming that counterfeiting is a pretty big deal. I've not sold anything that would require those services, but I have purchased something that was sent from an authentication service. Works for me, whatever it takes to help ensure what we're buying and selling is legit.

I found two eBay sales - $50 and $60 (sealed) in the last 90 or so. That seems about right - might have to wait a bit for a buyer but not a bad little penny...just not $120. Might be worth putting up with a $120 or B/O and wait for what you like.

Our LCS owner just jumped into the grading business, buying 50% of: https://revolutiongrading.com/
Warning: Their slabs are butt-ugly IMHO.

Never heard of them... assume there are 100s of such random grading companies?
A ton of new grading services popped up during COVID as the hobby exploded and the backlogs at the big companies reached months and, in PSAs case, nearly a yearlong turnaround time. A streamer I followed for video games has a stake in one aimed at Pokemon cards mostly (based in NH no less - TGA ).Derek Jeter has some stake in Arena Club Grading which is going to sportscard influencer route. I've seen so many weird slabs on eBay.

I'll be honest, I don't really get it from an LCS Perspective - even if you believe in the particular company. The PSA grip is so tight and BGS and SGC have really taken up most of the remaining air. All of them have flaws both operationally and presentation wise in my view but I dare to say most people grading cards aren't doing it purely for aesthetics but, down the line, to maximize sale value and accurately assess their collection in terms of authenticity and condition. And for most folks if you're encapsulating a card purely to display it, the "tux" look of SGC or simply a one-touch will do the job well too. I feel like an LCS that commits itself to a new/unproven grading company is just asking to sell their product for less than if they ponied up for the grading. Maybe it makes sense for cheap cards or prospecting but for anything of value? I'm not trusting Revolution Grading to get it right without a strong track record and even if they do, it won't sell for nearly the price if I do need to move it. Most buyers seem to treat those as raw cards. Nevermind for something that has a record of reprints and counterfeits - if PSA gets fooled I can chalk it up to a relatively rare error, but a newer company is a riskier proposition.

Like...Revolution passes more of a smell test than some of the truly "wtf" efforts (which is basically just a dude eyeballing a card and giving it what he thinks it would get) but still

This makes me wonder if anyone is out there counterfeiting Becket/PSA slabs. I see there is a bar code, which I assume corresponds with a registration number which can be looked up. Absolutely they are. There's some things you can do as a buyer of course but in any hobby scammers can get really good with this stuff. An article or two about it

Spotting Counterfeit PSA Slabs: Simple Tricks to Help You Avoid Fakes - HobbyLark
PSA Security: A Buyer's Guide (psacard.com)

One of the issues is that early PSA and BGS labels were uh...pretty simple. I have a card very recently graded and one graded much earlier at my desk right now - the newer label is more difficult to replicate than the older one (QR Code, different printing/coloring techniques with the ink, the slab has also been marked with a logo as well as the label). To your point I'd expect a counterfeiter to find a similar copy of a card on the PSA Registry, use that number (ideally an older one), and replicate from there. Certainly something to worry about on the higher end in my view, probably with more heavily traded cards. A lot of times, online sellers will use a valid PSA Graded card in imaging and then send the counterfeited slab. There were some reports of this happening on the high end Pokemon card scene (talking 1st edition Charizard type stuff).

I do think, beyond the future profit element, that is a reason why eBay added an authentication requirement for cards of a certain level. I don't think it necessarily means eBay authentication would catch it either (they are using grading companies for this) but the additional layer has been a bit of a peace of mind on the two times I've gotten a card that qualified for it. Neither card was likely to be a counterfeit target per se (one would be a huge pain to try and make a fake out of and the other is a fresh grade from PSA and not one of the premier Mantles you'd see it happen with) but it was nice.

Amazing, and I was wondering if this would appear. So in the end, what do we think is gonna happen? Both cards stay the same with their respective owners? I mean if I were the Brett guy there's no way in hell I'd ever give up that card, obviously. I guess the company needs to compensate Ruth guy with an actual Ruth auto? Think they will?

I'm guessing someone will attempt to own them both. The Brett guy hit the jackpot. The Ruth guy, not so much.

Ok, so this is probably foreign to many people here, but it’s the holy grail of Fortnite cards. There are currently 36 total graded and this is the 10th 10. They weren’t numbered, but only came in certain boxes and this card is just super low print. It's like the Charizard of Fortnite, I guess. Peely would be the Pikachu lol.

I just showed my son, he lost his mind. Cool card! I don't care what it is, I like seeing all of it...thanks for sharing!

So here's something interesting I'm going through as I wanted to "test" the eBay authentication services. I've been wanting a 1956 Ted Williams forever. Basically it's the holy grail for me (the 1955 is #2, I'm a HUGE fan of the landscape-oriented cards, especially of those years). So I saw an auction that had the 1956 pictured, but was listed instead as the 1959 Fleer #5. It was a buy it now, so the price I paid was certainly that of the 1956, but I wanted that card and this particular one looked nice. Plus I wanted to see if it would pass authentication or if it even mattered in a case like this. I just got the email a few minutes ago that it did indeed pass authentication and is on the way to me:

60444

The end result is perfectly OK with me, I think it's a nice looking 56 Ted and I'm super-excited to finally have one (I'm looking for a good gray back to go with is, just cause I'm a collector and can't stand it if I don't have both). I just think it's funny that the card passed through the services without any sort of reach out saying hey you sure you want this card??

Yup, I've bought a handful of cards through that process on Ebay, haven't had an issue yet. I'm certainly glad they are doing it, there was a lot of BS going on and they found a good way to put a stop to it.

My 1950 Jackie Robinson is graded by SGC. It went through Ebay Authentication. The Authentication company they used - PSA. I'm pretty sure if I'm ever to resell that card the buyer can be as certain as one can be that it is authentic.

The LCS investor has been over-the-top critical of PSA's value proposition. "They're thieves." I get the sentiment, but he's got his MAGA-level conspiracy theories. A proud 'Never-PSA-er.'

Different Topic: Assuming a main target market for Heritage is set builders, what's the deal with A HUNDRED short prints (401-500) in the base set? At 1 SP per 3 packs, does Topps really expect people to buy (a minimum of) 13 boxes?

What else are other people using for displays? I'm currently using two of those three-level glass IKEA display shelves that are all the rage for a low price. I told my wife this year I'd like to upgrade to something that's one unit, but like the size of 3-4 of the displays I have. Here's what I'm currently rocking (please excuse the mess, I've been doing a ton of sorting/buying/selling lately and have my supplies scattered about at this time):

60456

I have lights and power to put in these, but I think I'm gonna wait until I get something bigger and nicer. And preferably with a sliding door and possibly a lock.

As an aside, this has always been one of my most cherished items haha:

6045860459

I always loved how Jerry would have his Wally in the Adirondack chair displayed during games, and bought one of them from his official Sox website or whatever when they became available one day. It's certainly seen it's share of games over the years, as I like to keep the tradition going as best as I can in honor of Rem Dawg.

On the topic of displaying cards, the past few years I've been consolidating and upgrading my card collection with the focus on displaying them in my office and basement. I moved a few months back so I have them stored away at the moment or I would share some photos but I have about 6 of these cases that I use and probably need to buy a few more from cards that I've picked up in the meantime. They have a couple different sizes but I mostly use this size case which goes for $80 on amazon. The case is well built and comes with a light weight lock. The only downside is that you can't fit anything larger than a normal size slabbed card, so I have some that don't fit like a Ted Williams Red Man card but most do and I really like the look of the cases.

Highly recommend the black display case for PSA cards. I have tons of framed items on my walls but the PSA cards in the case always has people stop. For my sons room we have one for bobble heads that we add to with every new ballpark we visit. Other black cases have picks, baseballs and a smaller one that perfectly holds the mini football helmets that can fit in the palm of your hand.

Make friends with someone at a frame shop and they can help you with cut outs on matting to help display loose cards.

@Traut Beautiful card!!! Are you putting together the whole 51 Bowman set, did I read that in here somewhere?? The guy I went to the card show with last weekend, his brother has been putting together the 1948-49 Leaf set over the last few years. Thing is, he wants all the cards to be PSA 8, so he's paying tens of thousands per card. He's around 55/98 complete, so it's certainly coming along and that's already a crazy-impressive collection so far. Anyway, curious to hear more about your collection as well.

@jbupstate Love that framed Yaz collection. We do have a frame guy, but he's not quite to the friend-discount area yet. I do have five items out with him currently, and I can't wait to see them when they're ready. Def gonna share here and I actually will have a question for the group about one of the pieces.

Yea, for sure that black PSA case is the answer. Just ordered two of the one you recommended (currently $75). The items I'm having framed are all getting black frames, so this will all go together really well. Now I just gotta Tetris it all and figure out how it best fits on the walls.

I have no intentions of collecting the whole set. I just think Doby is 1a to Robinson’s 1 and while he doesn’t get the same credit and wasn’t as good of a player is historically significant and that card is beautiful. So I bought it.

I went to college in Montclair , NJ and had a class with a professor who wrote a Doby biography called Pride Against Prejudice. I really came to appreciate Doby and how he endured all the same indignities as Jackie Robinson. Stinks to be second.

Yes, that one would be my first choice, with the 1991 throwback design (and on a regular-sized card). I'd also happily take the Chrome version with the sticker auto. It's hard to lose with that iconic picture. My one gripe is that Topps used the faded print at the bottom to help the signature stand out, which means you lose that awesome pop of color from the yellow jackets and Green Monster in the background. The base card shows the colors really nicely.
Finally one of those listed on eBay:

Papi 2022 Stadium Club Chrome /25

Seller has it at $600 but I'm curious how low they'd go. As mentioned previously, the one 1991 throwback that hit went for $475, and that one is an on-card auto and numbered /10. The boxtoppers are going for $300 when listed, and those are on-card as well. $400 is probably the "fair" price for that one?

I also have been participating in random Stadium Club breaks, by buying the Red Sox, or individual players like David Ortiz, Ichiro, Ohtani, etc. So far these breaks have been AWFUL haha. Just finished a full case and I possibly got the best card with a gold minted Ohtani chrome. 32 autos, 30 of which were rookies. I don't remember seeing many (if any at all) alternate cards either. Whew, glad that case is out of circulation!

I bought one of the chromed variants of that Papi card, the auto is too rich for me. Would really like one of those 1955 style Pedros though, I've been collecting things in the '54 and '55 designs. I got a 1/1 Boggs Auto from the 2022 archives a while back, I think it was from the 2020 set and just the auto part is 1/1 but I never had one of those before, or a Boggs auto, so I figured what the heck since it's a design I like.

My lock doesn't seem to work with a crap though. As in, I can't get it to lock. Not sure how much I care if it does or doesn't work

I got a 1/1 Boggs Auto from the 2022 archives a while back, I think it was from the 2020 set and just the auto part is 1/1 but I never had one of those before, or a Boggs auto, so I figured what the heck since it's a design I like.
Originally my plan was to get one of each variant of The Papi, but I dislike sticker autos SO MUCH and that particular variant really isn't doing anything for me. I think I'll be saving that one for last, if I go for one at all. And even if I wanted that one, there's zero chance I'd pay $600. And to make it even funnier, that seller offered me an incredible deal of $20 off last night. Tempting! In all seriousness, I'd pay $200-ish for a clean one, just to "complete" the set. I just checked and I currently have 10 different versions. I need to try to figure out exactly how many there are, but that may be impossible to know since Stadium Club is notorious for having eleventy billion variations for each card.

Post a pic of the Boggs, I love seeing any and all Boggs Red Sox cards (Yankees, Rays...yea, not so much). Been a collector of his my whole life basically. 1/1's are everywhere these days, but it's cool because it makes it to where we can own them! I was eyeballing a 1/1 Topps Archives Boggs that was a Stadium Club reprint, but ultimately let it go. As for the '55 designs, I have the Pedro, Boggs, Nomar, Fisk as far as Sox (still haven't seen a Papi), as well as an Eck and Ozzie Smith. In the '54 I have Varitek, Nomar, and Eck. But I think I'm gonna go ahead and collect the whole '54 and '55 sets over time just because I love those cards SO much.

The Papi Stadium Club autos aren't stickers, are they?

The Chrome ones are unfortunately. There's a #/25 rainbow chrome currently listed on eBay that I posted above that's a sticker. I don't know why Stadium Club has always done it like that but their Chrome cards tend to be sticker autos. The oversized box toppers, the 1/10 1991 throwbacks, the standard card, as well as the red foil and rainbow foil all are on-card. There may be another variant or two on-card, but as far as I can tell, only the Chromes are stickers. For any player.

That Boggs RULES!!!! Man that is an awesome card. If you're gonna keep in in the OG one-touch, definitely consider a one-touch team bag to help protect the case from scratches. It's like protection inception, but you gotta do what you gotta do! I am so cracked out over the '55 and '56 designs. So much so that I mayyyyyyy have finally picked up an original '56 Ted, and possibly may have a line a '55!

I have the '55 Ted and both '54. There are some '56 cards that I like but the "border" around the inset photos throws me off sometimes.

I assume Topps Clearly Authentic will be doing '56 throwbacks next year. Oh mama I'm gonna need a second job if so.

Many Topps cards are kinda ugly. That Dynasty Boggs is 10/10 in terms of design.
