Love looking at older cards and seeing old versions of current stadiums, or the now non-existent stadiums

There's a charity called "Commons For Kids" that takes in common cards and, well, donates them to kids -- at shelters, underfunded schools, community centers, etc.

Info here: https://commons4kids.org

[If I just caused that other goddamned jingle to get stuck in your head, I apologize.]
Thanks for this. Hopefully, they can handle the million plus cards I'm going to be sending them in the near future (once my wife finishes her massive basement renovation project and I can actually get down there and figure out where my shit got moved to).

I was watching the Pedro/Clemens 2000 dual where Trot hits the 2 out homer in the 9th.

What struck me the most was how little ads there were. Behind the plate is free from distraction. And always weird to see pre-green monster seats with that crop of players since they were there during the transition.

The game moved so much faster.

Ooooh I like both of those. Always loved those guys.

I wish Ortiz had a better rookie. There’s 3 in the 97 Fleer set.None are that good - and one always has snow damage because of the foil.

Got tired of waiting on UPS, broke down and drove to my local and picked up a Topps Hobby Box, will be opening it as part of my OOTP stream in the morning. Will let you know what the damage is.

Hobby Box contained a #/199 Aaron Nola game used Jersey 1986 Variant black border, and a Chrome #/25 Clemens 1986 orange refractor as big hits. Minor hits were #/299 Scherzer, Acuna, Yordan and Lindor rainbow chrome, and a few foils (Nico Hoerner Future Star, and a couple others).

The Clemens is absolutely sick.

Nice. Curiosity wants me to see the Clemens but I'm scared of the envy.

So apparently there's this ******** who takes expensive cards and reprints them. Just because it does say reprint in the description doesn't make this not IP fraud, right? Hope he gets what's coming. Is Fleer still in business? I don't know. But Topps is for sure.

It's certainly copyright infringement at the least, assuming he's not bought a license from those old card makers.

Fleer liquidated in 2005. Upper Deck owns the brand name and assets now, including the copyright on old cards.

Maybe we're due for a thread title change. A Luca Doncic 2018/19 Panini card just sold for...wait for it....$4.6 MILLION. That's the 2nd highest price every paid for a sport card behind a '52 Mantle that sold for $5.2M.

If there were any doubts left they are gone - the industry has officially lost its mind.

Cray Cray

I sort of get high prices for older cards like a Mantle, Jordan, Gretzky, etc rookie. Those players have done what they've done and there's no undoing that. What if Doncic snaps his ACL tonight and is never the same? On what planet does this make sense? And while we're here, 'get off my lawn' etc etc...

Yep. This is a bubble that won't last. NFT's are similar.

But yeah, not sure who the mod to ask for would be - but we should just say "SPORTS CARD - THE THREAD"

Right? With Mantle and pre-expansion era cards they're historical relics and the scarcity developed organically. Tons of those cards were printed and many were thrown away or damaged over the years. PSA says there are only three '52 Mickey Mantle cards that they've graded 10, only 6 graded 9, etc.

Now Topps makes a 1/1 rookie card that's a special color with some extra shiny flair thrown in and inserts it into a pack like a Wonky golden ticket. Then they make another 25 in a different color, then 100 on top of that, and so on. It strikes me like the Danbury Mint stuff that gets sold on QVC.

It's all absurd.

So I did the stupidest thing...

I bought a Rickey Henderson RC for my brother. Put it in a mailer...and used Paypal shipping (which I always use, and my wife uses for her business) and shipped it off.

Checked the tracking...and SOMEHOW, instead of CANADA, I put CONGO.

Now - I'm HOPEFUL they look at the address and see the Postal Code and put two and two together. But I don't know. I tried to replicate the error - and CONGO isn't even on their fucking list of countries. So I'm like...what the fuckkkkkk. The price was the same as shipping to canada normally, too. So I'm so confused.

Was the Henderson graded? I've got a couple, but not graded. The price fluctuates wildly depending on the grade, obviously. I'm trying to figure out if I should sell them while the market is hot. All info appreciated!
It was a low grade (like a 6.5 BGS). It wasn't expensive but it was a birthday gift, and he doesn't care about grade - just lots of memories of the card.

I just feel bad. I was so excited...I'm hopeful though. we'll see.

I'm sure you've tried this already, but did you try contacting PayPal or the underlying carrier (USPS/UPS)? They may have a way to put a stop on it before it leaves the country.

Yeah, I talked to them. They said it'll either be fixed and sent to the right place, or returned to me. But they also didn't know how I did the Congo as that's not on their supported countries list.

Got my final card today (for now);

You've gotten some sweet sweet cards recently! I am eyeing a few things but can't pull the trigger right now. The 1960 Yaz is calling me though!

I know it's insignificant in the current world of card collecting but I was able to grab a couple singles off EBay and complete the base set of the 2021 Topps Series 1. In the current era of chasing the big value cards it felt good to finish a 330 card set.

Oh I wish you would have said something, I have almost an entire second set, probably could have finished yours for you.

That’s awesome! Picked this up the other day. Not tremendously valuable but I like the look of it.

Well, this thread got me back into buying cards. I bought some spots in breaks over the past few weeks and bought some individual cards on eBay and Beckett Marketplace. A few of the fun ones I've picked up are in the photo. The next single I'm looking to grab is a 97 Fleer Papi rookie at a (somewhat) reasonable price.

This afternoon, I opened a couple of blaster boxes of 20-21 Parkhurst hockey, which was a lot of fun. Tonight, I'm cracking a bunch of '21 Topps Series 1 blasters, which would make 12 year old me insanely jealous of 50 year old me.

The 2021 is a seriously awesome product, enjoy the blasters! I need to get a picture of the Judge Box Loader I got out of my jumbo, because it is a stupid awesome card. I will try to get it posted tonight. Took it down to my shop today to try to find a sleeve for it (bookmark shape) and he asked me to let him know how much I want for it, so we shall see how long it remains in my collection. I may try to trade it for his 2014 Mookie Topps Update that's been sitting on his shelf taunting me for 6 months, and another box or two. He has a metric ton of older stuff from the late 80's to early 2000's that I might try to get my hands on.

Or I might hold it. There's something to be said for having something that there are only 5 of in existence. I think it's pretty cool. Even if it is Judge.
